Luck and Last Resorts
Luck and Last Resorts by Sarah Grunder Ruiz is $1.99! This is book two in a series, but operates fine as a standalone. I’ve heard good things about Ruiz’s writing from friends who read romance. Based on their comments, I expect lots of emotions and pining.
They have a second chance at love, but there are some rough seas ahead in the new contemporary romance from the acclaimed author of Love, Lists, and Fancy Ships.
Commitment-phobe Nina Lejeune lives by two rules:
1. Always have fun.
2. Don’t rely on anyone but yourself.
The first rule is easy; the second, she’s only broken once.Ten years after fleeing home, Nina is the chief stewardess on the super yacht Serendipity, single by choice, and perfectly content with how life has turned out.
But Nina’s ex-coworker and old flame, Irish chef Ollie Dunne, isn’t so happy with the status quo. One year after leaving yachting, he’s returned as the Serendipity’s chef with an ultimatum: if Nina continues to deny she’s in love with him by the end of this charter season, he’ll go back to Ireland for good.
Nina and Ollie’s shared secret from their past threatens to shipwreck not only their relationship, but the entire boat. But as their connection grows amidst chaotic guests and crew drama, could there be smooth sailing in their future?

The Holiday Trap
The Holiday Trap by Roan Parrish is $1.99! This is a holiday romance inspired by the movie The Holiday. It was also mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Have you read this one or seen The Holiday? Do you have a favorite holiday movie? (Yes, Die Hard counts!)
For fans of Alexandria Bellefleur and Alexis Hall comes a charming, hilarious, and heartwarming LGBTQIA+ romcom about two separate couples finding love over the holidays from acclaimed author Roan Parrish!
Greta Russakoff loves her tight-knit family and tiny Maine hometown, even if they don’t always understand what it’s like to be a lesbian living in such a small world. She desperately needs space to figure out who she is.
Truman Belvedere has just had his heart crushed into a million pieces when he learned that his boyfriend of almost a year has a secret life that includes a husband and a daughter. Reeling from this discovery, all he wants is a place to lick his wounds far, far away from New Orleans.
Enter Greta and Truman’s mutual friend, Ramona, who facilitates a month-long house swap. Over the winter holidays, each of them will have a chance to try on a new life…and maybe fall in love with the perfect partner of their dreams. But all holidays must come to an end, and eventually Greta and Truman will have to decide whether the love they each found so far from home is worth fighting for.

Tahira in Bloom
Tahira in Bloom by Farah Heron is $2.49! This was another Hide Your Wallet mention. I believe this is also Heron’s first young adult novel. It looks like there are themes of flowers and fashion in this one!

Since DIE HARD counts as a holiday movie, I thought people would like to know that there are many (many) Advent calendars relating to the film. As they say, it’s not Christmas till Hans Gruber falls off the Nakatomi Plaza. Not including a specific link since all you have to do is Google Die Hard Advent Calendar and lots of links will appear; I didn’t want to steer people to just one.
My favorite holiday movie is Muppet Christmas Carol. My second favorite is Desk Set which isn’t really a Christmas movie but has a scene set at Christmas so I think of it at Christmas.
Muppet Christmas Carol is also my favorite holiday movie! It’s the only one I really want to watch every year, although my husband likes to watch Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men which are also fun.
Every Christmas we have to watch: A Christmas Story, Blackadder’s Christmas Carol, and Bernard & the Genie (a mid-nineties production with Alan Cumming, Rowan Atkinson, and Lenny Henry that is both hilarious and poignant). We also have to listen to Elvis’s Christmas album. My kids (now adults) will watch the MST3K version of Santa Claus Conquers the Martians—a fixture of their childhoods because hubby & I were those sort of parents—but I’ve usually gone to bed by then.
But it’s not even Thanksgiving yet!!! Not movies, but it’s not Christmas without the Original Grinch and Charlie Brown’s Christmas. And Bruce Springsteen’s Santa Claus is Coming to Town.
Did you know that the screenplay for Desk Set was written by Nora Ephron’s parents? I love that movie. I also like The Thin Man with Myrna Loy and William Powell. It is not about Christmas but is set at Christmas.
@MaryK – Desk Set is one of my Christmas movies too!!! For the exact same reasons 😉
