Get Rec’d with Amanda – Volume 37

Welcome back, everyone! Let’s talk book recommendations!

Isn’t it so funny that I get the urge to do some reading when I’m unable to (i.e. moving and all of my books and electronics are packed). This time, I’ve included a rec from the community plus more genre fiction for us all to enjoy.

How about you? Have any recommendations to share with the class?

  • Against the Currant

Against the Currant by Olivia Matthews

If you need more cozy, foodie romances in your life, look no further! Also obsessed with the art style on these!

In Olivia Matthews’s Against the Currant, the first Spice Isle Bakery Mystery, investigating a murder was never supposed to be on the menu…

Little Caribbean, Brooklyn, New York: Lyndsay Murray is opening Spice Isle Bakery with her family, and it’s everything she’s ever wanted. The West Indian bakery is her way to give back to the community she loves, stay connected to her Grenadian roots, and work side-by-side with her family. The only thing getting a rise out of Lyndsay is Claudio Fabrizi, a disgruntled fellow bakery owner who does not want any competition.

On opening day, he comes into the bakery threatening to shut them down. Fed up, Lyndsay takes him to task in front of what seems to be the whole neighborhood. So when Claudio turns up dead a day later—murdered—Lyndsay is unfortunately the prime suspect. To get the scent of suspicion off her and her bakery, Lyndsay has to prove she’s innocent—under the watchful eyes of her overprotective brother, anxious parents, and meddlesome extended family—what could go wrong?

  • The Book Eaters

The Book Eaters by Sunyi Dean

Horror fantasy with book-ish themes! What a trippy read and I think it’ll work well for fans of AJ Hackwith’s Hell’s Library series.

Out on the Yorkshire Moors lives a secret line of people for whom books are food, and who retain all of a book’s content after eating it. To them, spy novels are a peppery snack; romance novels are sweet and delicious. Eating a map can help them remember destinations, and children, when they misbehave, are forced to eat dry, musty pages from dictionaries.

Devon is part of The Family, an old and reclusive clan of book eaters. Her brothers grow up feasting on stories of valor and adventure, and Devon—like all other book eater women—is raised on a carefully curated diet of fairytales and cautionary stories.

But real life doesn’t always come with happy endings, as Devon learns when her son is born with a rare and darker kind of hunger—not for books, but for human minds.

  • The Companion

    The Companion by E.E. Ottoman

This is one of my go-to recommendations for tender queer romance or for people wanting more poly relationships. If you missed it, Shana reviewed and enjoyed this one!

    New York, 1949

After years of trying to break into New York City’s literary scene, Madeline Slaughter is emotionally and physically exhausted. When a friend offers her a safe haven as the live-in companion to reclusive, bestselling novelist Victor Hallowell she jumps at the chance to escape the city.

Madeline expects to find rest and quiet in the forests of Upstate New York. Instead, she finds Victor, handsome and intensely passionate, and Audrey Coffin, Victor’s mysterious and beautiful neighbor.

When Victor offers her a kiss and the promise of more Madeline allows herself to become entangled even as Audrey is also claiming her heart. The only problem is that Audrey and Victor are ex-lovers with plenty of baggage between them. As Madeline finds herself opening up and falling in love with both she starts to wonder, can there be a future for all three?

  • Heavy Flow

    Heavy Flow by Amanda Laird

This one is more of a recommendation to the community from the comments on a menstruation and menopausal Stuff We Like. Didn’t want any of your to miss it and thanks Erin for sharing!

What do you know about your menstrual cycle?

A woman’s cycle is considered her fifth vital sign, telling you as much about your health and wellness as your blood pressure or pulse. Yet, from a young age, girls around the world are taught the minimum, if anything, about their own bodies and this important function.

Instead we are taught to expect periods to be painful and gross, that hormones will turn you hysterical every twenty-eight days, and that good girls definitely don’t talk about menstruation.

This book examines the history of period shame and stigma and the far-reaching effects it has had on women’s health and wellness today, while providing a self-care guide to understanding menstrual cycles and reclaiming your fifth vital sign through holistic nutrition, lifestyle advice, and self-advocacy.
