The Brass Queen
The Brass Queen by Elizabeth Chatsworth is $2.99! I mentioned this on a recent Hide Your Wallet because I was very interested in the heroine. Have any of you picked this up?
She knows a liar when she sees one.
He knows a fraud when he meets one.In a steam-powered world, Miss Constance Haltwhistle is the last in a line of blue-blooded rogues. Selling firearms under her alias, the “Brass Queen,” she has kept her baronial estate’s coffers full. But when US spy J. F. Trusdale saves her from assassins, she’s pulled into a search for a scientist with an invisibility serum. As royal foes create an invisible army to start a global war, Constance and Trusdale must learn to trust each other. If they don’t, the world as they know it will disappear before their eyes.
If you like the Parasol Protectorate or the Invisible Library series, you’ll love this gaslamp fantasy—a rambunctious romantic romp that will have you both laughing out loud and wishing you owned all of Miss Haltwhistle’s armaments.

In Bed with a Highlander
In Bed with a Highlander by Maya Banks is $1.99! This is the first book in the McCabe Trilogy and features a forced/arranged marriage. Some felt the historical romance seemed a little too modern, but others recommend it for a quick, fun read.
Ewan McCabe, the eldest, is a warrior determined to vanquish his enemy. Now, with the time ripe for battle, his men are ready and Ewan is poised to take back what is his—until a blue-eyed, raven-haired temptress is thrust upon him. Mairin may be the salvation of Ewan’s clan, but for a man who dreams only of revenge, matters of the heart are strange territory to conquer.
The illegitimate daughter of the king, Mairin possesses prized property that has made her a pawn—and wary of love. Her worst fears are realized when she is rescued from peril only to be forced into marriage by her charismatic and commanding savior, Ewan McCabe. But her attraction to her ruggedly powerful new husband makes her crave his surprisingly tender touch; her body comes alive under his sensual mastery. And as war draws near, Mairin’s strength, spirit, and passion challenge Ewan to conquer his demons—and embrace a love that means more than revenge and land.

Fresh
Fresh by Margot Wood is $2.99! This is a college romance, loosely inspired by Emma. I heard this one is pretty sex-positive and I remember being curious about it because it’s set at the school where I got my Master’s.
A hilarious and vulnerable coming-of-age story about the thrilling new experience–and missteps–of a girl’s freshman year of college
Some students enter their freshman year of college knowing exactly what they want to do with their lives. Elliot McHugh is not one of those people. But picking a major is the last thing on Elliot’s mind when she’s too busy experiencing all that college has to offer–from dancing all night at off-campus parties, to testing her RA Rose’s patience, to making new friends, to having the best sex one can have on a twin-sized dorm room bed. But she may not be ready for the fallout when reality hits. When the sex she’s having isn’t that great. When finals creep up and smack her right in the face. Or when her roommate’s boyfriend turns out to be the biggest a-hole. Elliot may make epic mistakes, but if she’s honest with herself (and with you, dear reader), she may just find the person she wants to be. And maybe even fall in love in the process . . . Well, maybe.

Dear Enemy
Dear Enemy by Kristen Callihan is $1.99! This is a standalone enemies to lovers contemporary romance. It was released back in March and published by Amazon’s romance imprint. Unfortunately, that means it isn’t available at other vendors, but is in the KU offerings.
From New York Times bestselling author Kristen Callihan comes a smart, emotional contemporary romance about finding love with the most unlikely of people.
As kids, they hated each other. Macon Saint was beautiful, but despite his name, Delilah knew he was the devil. That he dated her slightly evil sister, Samantha, was no picnic either. When they broke up, it was a dream come true: Delilah never had to see him again.
Ten years later, her old enemy sends a text.
Delilah’s sister has stolen a valuable heirloom from Macon, now a rising Hollywood star, and he intends to collect his due. One problem: Sam has skipped town.
Sparks still sizzle between Macon and Delilah, only this heat feels alarmingly like unwanted attraction. But Delilah is desperate to keep her weak-hearted mother from learning of her sister’s theft. So she proposes a deal: she’ll pay off the debt by being Macon’s personal chef and assistant.
It’s a recipe for disaster, but Macon can’t stop himself from accepting. Even though Delilah clearly hates him, there’s something about her that feels like home. Besides, they’re no longer kids, and what once was a bitter rivalry has the potential to be something sweeter. Something like forever.

Me, I find the idea of being with a sibling’s ex super super squicky.
I enjoyed THE BRASS QUEEN; it’s a light steampunk romp. The blurb’s comparison to the Parasol Protectorate and Invisible Library series is pretty fair, I thought. It’s almost too insubstantial, but it kept me turning the pages and was a welcome distraction from some real-life stress.
The Amazon link for The Brass Queen gives me a “page not found” message (also a picture of a dog).
I bought THE BRASS QUEEN maybe a year ago because I liked the Parasol Protectorate and the Invisible Library series, but I couldn’t get started with it. May have to try again.
I enjoyed Dear Enemy a lot. I’m a sucker for the enemies to lovers trope and the sister’s ex thing is actually not as bad as it sounds. But then I usually love Callihan’s books 🙂
Ditto Elva. I also really liked DEAR ENEMY (also usually love Callihan’s books) and wanted to second that the sibling’s ex situation is part of the plot but definitely not as bad as it sounds.
BRASS QUEEN was fine, but I couldn’t get over how naive the Heroine was, thinking people actually bought her weapons and didn’t use them for war/fighting. What did she think they were using them for??? Some of the worldbuilding stuff was interesting, but couldn’t make up for that huge, to me, flaw.
