  • All the Feels

All the Feels by Olivia Dade

All the Feels by Olivia Dade is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance and the second book in the Spoiler Alert series. It was also just recommended by Shana in our recent Rec League on Book-Long Grovels.

Following Spoiler Alert, Olivia Dade returns with another utterly charming romantic comedy about a devil-may-care actor—who actually cares more than anyone knows—and the no-nonsense woman hired to keep him in line.

Alexander Woodroe has it all. Charm. Sex appeal. Wealth. Fame. A starring role as Cupid on TV’s biggest show, God of the Gates. But the showrunners have wrecked his character, he’s dogged by old demons, and his post-show future remains uncertain. When all that reckless emotion explodes into a bar fight, the tabloids and public agree: his star is falling.

Enter Lauren Clegg, the former ER therapist hired to keep him in line. Compared to her previous work, watching over handsome but impulsive Alex shouldn’t be especially difficult. But the more time they spend together, the harder it gets to keep her professional remove and her heart intact, especially when she discovers the reasons behind his recklessness…not to mention his Cupid fanfiction habit.

When another scandal lands Alex in major hot water and costs Lauren her job, she’ll have to choose between protecting him and offering him what he really wants—her. But he’s determined to keep his improbably short, impossibly stubborn, and extremely endearing minder in his life any way he can. And on a road trip up the California coast together, he intends to show her exactly what a falling star will do to catch the woman he loves: anything at all.

  • The Once and Future Witches

The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow

RECOMMENDED: The Once and Future Witches by Alix E. Harrow is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

Overall I loved reading this book. I literally gasped and clapped my hands over my mouth periodically, like a silent movie star. It’s so gripping, so beautifully written, and such a powerful homage to women’s voices and the need to unify against a common enemy.

In 1893, there’s no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the Eastwood sisters–James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna–join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten words and ways that might turn the women’s movement into the witch’s movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote-and perhaps not even to live-the sisters will need to delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances, and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There’s no such thing as witches. But there will be.

  • The Wife Upstairs

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins

The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins is $2.99! Since this is a thriller inspired by Jane Eyre, you know Carrie had to review this one. She gave it a B:

At its best, the book was a searing condemnation of the hollowness of the rich and at its worst it was compelling fun. I rooted for Jane even at her most amoral, because I knew she was lonely and adrift, and I couldn’t put the book down, because I couldn’t guess what would happen next. And then I re-read it.

A delicious twist on a Gothic classic, The Wife Upstairs pairs Southern charm with atmospheric domestic suspense, perfect for fans of B.A. Paris and Megan Miranda.

Meet Jane. Newly arrived to Birmingham, Alabama, Jane is a broke dog-walker in Thornfield Estates––a gated community full of McMansions, shiny SUVs, and bored housewives. The kind of place where no one will notice if Jane lifts the discarded tchotchkes and jewelry off the side tables of her well-heeled clients. Where no one will think to ask if Jane is her real name.

But her luck changes when she meets Eddie Rochester. Recently widowed, Eddie is Thornfield Estates’ most mysterious resident. His wife, Bea, drowned in a boating accident with her best friend, their bodies lost to the deep. Jane can’t help but see an opportunity in Eddie––not only is he rich, brooding, and handsome, he could also offer her the kind of protection she’s always yearned for.

Yet as Jane and Eddie fall for each other, Jane is increasingly haunted by the legend of Bea, an ambitious beauty with a rags-to-riches origin story, who launched a wildly successful southern lifestyle brand. How can she, plain Jane, ever measure up? And can she win Eddie’s heart before her past––or his––catches up to her?

With delicious suspense, incisive wit, and a fresh, feminist sensibility, The Wife Upstairs flips the script on a timeless tale of forbidden romance, ill-advised attraction, and a wife who just won’t stay buried. In this vivid reimagining of one of literature’s most twisted love triangles, which Mrs. Rochester will get her happy ending?

  • Daughter of the Moon Goddess

Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan

Daughter of the Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan is $2.99! This is an adult fantasy debut that I mentioned on a previous Get Rec’d post. The continuation of this duology is out in November.

A captivating debut fantasy inspired by the legend of Chang’e, the Chinese moon goddess, in which a young woman’s quest to free her mother pits her against the most powerful immortal in the realm.

Growing up on the moon, Xingyin is accustomed to solitude, unaware that she is being hidden from the feared Celestial Emperor who exiled her mother for stealing his elixir of immortality. But when Xingyin’s magic flares and her existence is discovered, she is forced to flee her home, leaving her mother behind.

Alone, powerless, and afraid, she makes her way to the Celestial Kingdom, a land of wonder and secrets. Disguising her identity, she seizes an opportunity to learn alongside the emperor’s son, mastering archery and magic, even as passion flames between her and the prince.

To save her mother, Xingyin embarks on a perilous quest, confronting legendary creatures and vicious enemies across the earth and skies. But when treachery looms and forbidden magic threatens the kingdom, she must challenge the ruthless Celestial Emperor for her dream—striking a dangerous bargain in which she is torn between losing all she loves or plunging the realm into chaos.

Daughter of the Moon Goddess begins an enchanting, romantic duology which weaves ancient Chinese mythology into a sweeping adventure of immortals and magic—where love vies with honor, dreams are fraught with betrayal, and hope emerges triumphant.

I hated Spoiler Alert. It felt like reading AU fanfic. (Nothing wrong with fanfic, but I wanted to read a book not fanfic!) It seems like that won’t be an issue in All The Feels based on the description (and Liz’s comment). I’m nervous but I’d like to give Olivia Dade another shot.

  5. LML says:

Well, dang, @Liz. Your enthusiastic comment shoved me right off of the fence I was sitting on.

  6. Liz says:

All the love for All The Feels. Olivia Dade writes plus-size heroines so we’ll. She also writes really delicious cinnamon roll beta heroes.

Kissed By Magic by Erica Ridley is free on amazon-I haven’t read it but can’t beat that price!

The Wife Upstairs sounds good, I’m especially intrigued because I just realized Rachel Hawkins wrote The Ex Hex (which I loved) under the name Erin Sterling.

  9. Escapeologist says:

Kissed By Magic is a good one, I grabbed it last week and read it in one sitting.

  10. flchen1 says:

Thea Harrison’s Moonshadow and True Colors are currently free. Also Patricia Fischer’s Resisting the Doctor (part of her Marietta Medical series from Tule) is free.

I finished me relisten of books 1 & 2 of Jim C Hines’s Janitors of the Post-Apocalypse series earlier today, which means I finally got to start book 3, Terminal Peace! I’m a little over 2 hours in, I’m really enjoying it.
