The Lion’s Den
RECOMMENDED: The Lion’s Den by Katherine St. John is $4.99! Elyse wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it an A. Definitely check out her review for a list of triggers to be aware of.
This book is really two mysteries in one, and when they collide it’s a wonderful “ah-ha” moment. I wish I could say more than that, but I don’t want to ruin a single thing for another reader.
A dream vacation on a luxurious yacht turns deadly in this pulse-pounding beach read and perfect book club pick about glamour, friendship, romance, and betrayal on the Riviera.
Belle likes to think herself immune to the dizzying effects of fabulous wealth. But when her best friend, Summer, invites her on a glamorous girls’ getaway to the Mediterranean aboard her billionaire boyfriend’s yacht, the only sensible answer is yes. Belle hopes the trip will be a much-needed break from her stalled acting career and uniquely humiliating waitressing job, but once aboard the luxurious Lion’s Den, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems. The dream vacation quickly devolves into a nightmare as Belle and the handful of other girlfriends Summer has invited are treated more like prisoners than guests by their controlling host, and Belle comes to see Summer for what she truly is: a vicious gold digger who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Belle soon realizes she’s going to have to keep her wits about her — and her own big secret close to her chest — if she wants to make it off the yacht alive.

Stray
Stray by Rachel Vincent is $1.99! It’s the first in the Shifters urban fantasy series. According to Goodreads, I read this one over a decade ago (whoa) and gave it 3 out of 5 stars. The heroine grated on me at times. This book was also the answer to a HaBO submitted by author Darynda Jones.
I look like an all-American grad student. But I am a werecat, a shape-shifter, and I live in two worlds.
Despite reservations from my family and my Pride, I escaped the pressure to continue my species and carved out a normal life for myself. Until the night a Stray attacked.
I’d been warned about Strays–werecats without a Pride–constantly on the lookout for someone like me: attractive, female and fertile. I fought him off, but then learned two of my fellow tabbies had disappeared.
This brush with danger was all my Pride needed to summon me back…for my own protection. Yeah, right. But I’m no meek kitty. I’ll take on whatever–and whoever–I have to in order to find my friends. Watch out, Strays–’cause I got claws, and I’m not afraid to use them…

Darkest Flame
Darkest Flame by Donna Grant is $3.99! This is a paranormal romance with a dragon hero and an MI5 agent heroine. Some readers were a little annoyed at the hero and his Alpha-ness, but others liked the action blended in with the romance. Have you read this series? I read this one and felt it reminded me of early 2000s paranormals, though it came out in 2014.
The Dark Kings have fought for centuries to preserve their dragon magic. But one of the most powerful warriors of his kind will be put to the ultimate test. Is he strong enough to resist his greatest temptations? Or will he be forced to surrender—body and soul?
Denae Lacroix is a beautiful MI5 agent on a deadly mission. Sent to the Scottish Highlands to spy on the mysterious Dreagan Industries, she discovers too late that she’s been set up—as human bait. She is an irresistible lure for a man who has not seen or touched a woman for centuries. He is a man with a destiny—and a desire—that could destroy them both…
It’s been twelve hundred years since Kellan has walked among humans—and there’s no denying the erotically charged attraction he feels for Denae. But as a Dragon King, he is sworn to protect his secrets. Yet the closer he gets to this smart, ravishing woman, the more her life is in danger. All it takes is one reckless kiss to unleash a flood of desire, the fury of dragons… and the fiercest enemy of all.

I saw the Roshani Chokshi on hoopla some months and checked it out since I liked her Aru Shah middle grade fantasy. This one didn’t work for me, maybe I wasn’t in the right mood? it started out funny and entertaining but I got bored quickly.
I liked Once More Upon a Time, but be aware going in that it is nothing but fluff and cute.
THE LION’S DEN looks like a very good summer beach read, going to stash it for that purpose.
I picked up The Lion’s Den based on Elyse’s review and devoured it in one sitting (one late night, bad-decisions-book club sitting). It was my favorite SBTB recommendation of 2020. Great vacation beach read!
I remember reading “Stray” and I think all of the books were done being published when I picked up a used copy at HPB. I went on a tear and read like 4 or 5 of them in a week, but really don’t recall much about it at this point. Still, worth checking out if you’re into PNR. I might have to revisit this one.
Am I alone in thinking the heroine was an idiot for most of the Lion’s Den, and then still thinking she was an idiot when I got to the end? I mean, I put this book in my “meh” collection on my kindle.
I thought Once More Upon a Time was light but charming and a funny rif on fairy tale tropes. I enjoyed spending time with Ambrose and Imelda (who, unlike her namesake, dislikes shoes) and watching as they found their way into, then out of, then back into love.
