Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen

RECOMMENDEDGarden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen is $1.99! This is part of today’s 10-pages of fantasy and paranormal Kindle Daily Deals! I would liken this book to women’s fiction with a magical realism slant. It’s heartwarming and beautiful. I even wrote a Keeper Shelf squee for it; that’s how much I love this book.

In a garden surrounded by a tall fence, tucked away behind a small, quiet house in an even smaller town, is an apple tree that is rumored to bear a very special sort of fruit. In this luminous debut novel, Sarah Addison Allen tells the story of that enchanted tree, and the extraordinary people who tend it.…

The Waverleys have always been a curious family, endowed with peculiar gifts that make them outsiders even in their hometown of Bascom, North Carolina. Even their garden has a reputation, famous for its feisty apple tree that bears prophetic fruit, and its edible flowers, imbued with special powers. Generations of Waverleys tended this garden. Their history was in the soil. But so were their futures.

A successful caterer, Claire Waverley prepares dishes made with her mystical plants—from the nasturtiums that aid in keeping secrets and the pansies that make children thoughtful, to the snapdragons intended to discourage the attentions of her amorous neighbor. Meanwhile, her elderly cousin, Evanelle, is known for distributing unexpected gifts whose uses become uncannily clear. They are the last of the Waverleys—except for Claire’s rebellious sister, Sydney, who fled Bascom the moment she could, abandoning Claire, as their own mother had years before.

When Sydney suddenly returns home with a young daughter of her own, Claire’s quiet life is turned upside down—along with the protective boundary she has so carefully constructed around her heart. Together again in the house they grew up in, Sydney takes stock of all she left behind, as Claire struggles to heal the wounds of the past. And soon the sisters realize they must deal with their common legacy—if they are ever to feel at home in Bascom—or with each other.

Enchanting and heartfelt, this captivating novel is sure to cast a spell with a style all its own…

  • House of Earth and Blood

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah Maas

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas is $3.99! We did two podcast episodes with Sarah over the pandemic and honestly, those episodes were so much fun to record. Ellen wrote a fantastic review and gave it a B-:

When I started this book, I was expecting a jam-packed, over-the top fantasy with a lot of snark and heart. And House of Earth and Blood did deliver that, even if there were some missteps in execution. If you’ve enjoyed Maas’ other books, and if you can handle all the violence and slavery and slut-shaming, it’s worth it to push through the awkward beginning and the dragging bits in the middle for big payoff at the end.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas launches her brand-new CRESCENT CITY series with House of Earth and Blood: the story of half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she seeks revenge in a contemporary fantasy world of magic, danger, and searing romance.

Half-Fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan loves her life. By day, she works for an antiquities dealer, selling barely legal magical artifacts, and by night, she parties with her friends, savoring every pleasure Lunathion—otherwise known as Crescent City— has to offer. But it all comes crumbling down when a ruthless murder shakes the very foundations of the city—and Bryce’s world.

Two years later, her job has become a dead end, and she now seeks only blissful oblivion in the city’s most notorious nightclubs. But when the murderer attacks again, Bryce finds herself dragged into the investigation and paired with an infamous Fallen angel whose own brutal past haunts his every step.

Hunt Athalar, personal assassin for the Archangels, wants nothing to do with Bryce Quinlan, despite being ordered to protect her. She stands for everything he once rebelled against and seems more interested in partying than solving the murder, no matter how close to home it might hit. But Hunt soon realizes there’s far more to Bryce than meets the eye—and that he’s going to have to find a way to work with her if they want to solve this case.

As Bryce and Hunt race to untangle the mystery, they have no way of knowing the threads they tug ripple through the underbelly of the city, across warring continents, and down to the darkest levels of Hel, where things that have been sleeping for millennia are beginning to stir…

With unforgettable characters and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.

  • Malice

    Malice by Heather Walter

Malice by Heather Walter is $2.99! This was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet and is a spin on Sleeping Beauty. This is definitely on the darker side and has a romance between Princess Aurora and the evil sorceress.

A princess isn’t supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this darkly magical retelling of “Sleeping Beauty,” true love is more than a simple fairy tale.

Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.

You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily-ever-after.

    Utter nonsense.

Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.

    Until I met her.

Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though it was a power like mine that was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.

    Nonsense again.

Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I—

    I am the villain.

  • Strange Love

    Strange Love by Ann Aguirre

RECOMMENDED: Strange Love by Ann Aguirre is $2.99! Elyse loved this one and gave it an A:

Strange Love by Ann Aguirre is a shining example of just how good a romance novel can be, even if the hero has mandibles, and I recommend everyone go read it now.

He’s awkward. He’s adorable. He’s alien as hell.

Zylar of Kith Balak is a four-time loser in the annual Choosing. If he fails to find a nest guardian this time, he’ll lose his chance to have a mate for all time. Desperation drives him to try a matching service but due to a freak solar flare and a severely malfunctioning ship AI, things go way off course. This ‘human being’ is not the Tiralan match he was looking for.

She’s frazzled. She’s fierce. She’s from St. Louis.

Beryl Bowman’s mother always said she’d never get married. She should have added a rider about the husband being human. Who would have ever thought that working at the Sunshine Angel daycare center would offer such interstellar prestige? She doesn’t know what the hell’s going on, but a new life awaits on Barath Colony, where she can have any alien bachelor she wants.

They agree to join the Choosing together, but love is about to get seriously strange.

  1. Ren Benton/Lena Brassard says:

THE LIBRARY OF THE DEAD by T.L. Huchu is $2.99 everywhere. I’m strapped for cash and went to the reviews to talk me out of a purchase. Highlights from the 1-star reviews say the protagonist is immature (she’s 14 years old and has 50 times more responsibility than the average adult) and mean for wanting to be paid for her work (she’s facing eviction and has to ration food for her family and medications for her grandmother but should totally work for exposure /end sarcasm), as stated by people who have apparently only ever read one series and therefore think its author invented concepts that are as old as storytelling.

Since it seemed to piss off all the right people, I went ahead and bought it.

  2. KatiM says:

Strange Love was probably my favorite read of 2020.

  6. Nancy C says:

    I adore Strange Love!

  7. Mzcue says:

I enjoyed Strange Love too, but I highly recommend Grace Draven’s Radiance as being similar in trope but with greater depth and range.

  8. JudyW says:

Another grade A for STRANGE LOVE here. I cannot express how adorable this story was and the alien isn’t a cop out by being “just” like a human only with horns or something. This adorable guy has a carapace and mandibles but is a beautiful book boyfriend. For those who like this book I would also recommend Amanda Milo’s books CONTAGION and CONTAMINATED. They are slightly more irreverent but still solid and funny. She also did another alien story that was hilarious called QUARRY MASTER that I adored. For those who like a more intense alien love story with the similar physical (insect like) characteristics there is the most excellent COTTONWOOD BY R. Lee Smith.

  9. The Other Kate says:

CLIFFHANGER ALERT!!! “Malice” is part of a planned duology and ends at a VERY tense moment. I enjoyed it, but be aware it does not wrap up the story!

  10. Dreamingintrees says:

@The Other Kate thanks for the warning! I detest cliffhangers

  11. JoannaM says:

I love “Garden Spells” and the other books written around the Waverleys. For fans of Practical Magic!

  12. Deborah says:

BATTLE ROYAL by Lucy Parker is $1.99 at Amazon. (!)

  13. EJ says:

“She’s frazzled. She’s fierce. She’s from St. Louis.”

As the kids would say, that’s a mood.
