  • Never Kiss a Duke

Never Kiss a Duke by Megan Frampton

Never Kiss a Duke by Megan Frampton is $1.99! This is the first book in the Hazards of Dukes series, which released in January. Elyse gave this one a C grade, so your mileage may vary with this romance.

A disinherited duke and a former lady are courting much more than business in the first novel in Megan Frampton’s newest titillating series, Hazards of Dukes.

Everything he had ever known was a lie…

Sebastian, Duke of Hasford, has a title, wealth, privilege, and plenty of rakish charm. Until he discovers the only thing that truly belongs to him is his charm. An accident of birth has turned him into plain Mr. de Silva. Now, Sebastian is flummoxed as to what to do with his life—until he stumbles into a gambling den owned by Miss Ivy, a most fascinating young lady, who hires him on the spot. Working with a boss has never seemed so enticing.

Everything tells her he’s a risk she has to take

Two years ago, Ivy gambled everything that was precious to her—and won. Now the owner of London’s most intriguing gambling house, Ivy is competent, assured, and measured. Until she meets Mr. de Silva, who stirs feelings she didn’t realize she had. Can she keep her composure around her newest employee?

They vow to keep their partnership strictly business, but just one kiss makes them realize that with each passing day—and night—it becomes clear to them both that there’s nothing as tempting as what is forbidden…

  • You May Kiss the Bride

You May Kiss the Bride by Lisa Berne

PODCAST RECOMMENDEDYou May Kiss the Bride by Lisa Berne is $1.99! This historical romance was recommended on a previous podcast episode:

There’s so much tension, there’s so much passive-aggressiveness going on, and there’s just sharp comment after sharp comment, that it’s like all of this, Jane-Austen-esque level of wit running through it, and the social dynamics that are displayed there. I was fascinated by it.

In an unforgettable debut, Lisa Berne introduces you to the Penhallow Dynasty—men destined to marry, but hesitant to love.

Wealthy and arrogant, Gabriel Penhallow knows it’s time to fulfill his dynastic duty. All he must do is follow “The Penhallow way”—find a biddable bride, produce an heir and a spare, and then live separate lives. It’s worked so well for generations, certainly one kiss with the delectable Livia Stuart isn’t going to change things. Society dictates he marry her, and one chit is as good as another as long as she’s from a decent family.

But Livia’s transformation from an original to a mundane diamond of the first water makes Gabriel realize he desperately wants the woman who somehow provoked him into that kiss. And for all the ladies who’ve thrown themselves at him, it’s the one who wants to flee whom he now wants. But how will he keep this independent miss from flying away?

Enticing Miss Eugenie Villaret by Ella Quinn is $2.99 at Amazon! This is the fifth book in her Marriage Game series, and if you’re hoping to stock up, some of the other books are also on sale! This historical romance involves a hero and heroine hiding their identities from one another. A few readers mentioned that they couldn’t get invested in the characters, blaming the dialogue. However, others really loved the heroine and her headstrong characteristics. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Ella Quinn’s intriguing and irresistible bachelors are masters in the game of seduction. But nothing has the power to change a single man’s mind like a captivating woman. . .

William, Viscount Wivenly, plans to remain the most eligible of bachelors. He refuses to surrender to the schemes of husband-hunting ladies and matchmaking mamas. Fleeing the pressure of the ton, he’s bent on finding refuge in the West Indies. What he finds instead is a fascinating stranger, a woman so unlike those of his society that he can’t resist such a beguiling distraction. . .

Determined to let nothing complicate her mission to protect her family’s livelihood while covertly rescuing orphaned slave children, Miss Eugénie Villaret does her best to evade suitors. But when dashing William lures her down a path of forbidden adventure and delicious danger, she may be convinced that business can indeed be mixed with pleasure—and persuaded to add passion to her priorities. . .

  • Altered

    Altered by Jennifer Rush

Altered by Jennifer Rush is $1.99! This is a YA romance/thriller with genetically altered kids on the run from a giant nemesis, which may or may not be the nemesis they’ve identified. Readers really liked the action, the fast pace, and the puzzle of figuring out who and what was the truth in the story. However, some found there were details or plot devices that felt unnecessary.

They were made to forget. But they’ll never forgive.

Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch, at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, solemn and brooding; Cas, light-hearted and playful; Trev, smart and caring; and Sam . . . who’s stolen Anna’s heart.

When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape. Anna’s father pushes her to go with them, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs.

On the run, with her father’s warning in her head, Anna begins to doubt everything she thought she knew about herself. She soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.

  2. Star says:

Lisa Berne is an author to watch, imho. I haven’t read this one yet, but I read a later book in the series honestly not expecting much (the blurb, title, &c. all sounded completely ordinary), and was extremely impressed with it. Her handling of psychological nuances was way, way beyond what I’d expect from a relatively new author — better than a lot of seasoned authors, frankly.

Megan Frampton is a member of an oddly specific mental category of mine: historical authors who have voices I love, but whose work never quite satisfies me due to some (individually variable) combination of lack of period grounding, sneaky writing, and something I can only describe as having intuitions about what constitutes a satisfying narrative that differ a great deal from mine. (Other authors in the same mental category include Tessa Dare, Sarah MacLean, Eloisa James.) I enjoy her writing, but have never quite wholeheartedly approved of any of her books.

  3. Lisa F says:

I’m the site’s resident Ella Quinn stan and I really enjoy her romances – this one as a lot of fun.

I keep hoping Berne will work out for me, but the last several stories I’ve read have been really poorly plotted.

I agree with Star RE Frampton. She keeps getting so close to getting above a B with me but she never quite makes it.

  4. Susan D says:

Well, I think “Hazards of Dukes” is just about the silliest romance title pun out there. (Just had to get that off my chest.)
