This HaBO is from Pheobe, who is looking for a contemporary with suspense elements. Or it could be a romantic suspense. Content warning for the discussion of a miscarriage:
I’m trying to find the name of a contemporary romance which I skimmed through about 9 years ago.
The heroine lost her husband, and the hero and heroine are investigating his death. I think the hero must be a cop or investigator. They meet each other after many years because of this investigation which he is assigned to work on.
(He’s DEFINITELY an alpha!)
The hero/heroine were also high school lovers. They split up because of something to do with the heroine getting pregnant while they were in high school. She had a miscarriage at the time, but the hero didn’t know. I don’t even think he knew that she was pregnant. Or maybe he found out on his own, without her having told him.
When they’re investigating her husband’s death, later in the novel, the heroine tells the hero about the miscarriage, and there’s lots of crying. I think this could have been 3/4 through the book, but I’m not 100% sure.
I also remember that when they were young in high school, the heroine used to be very shy about receiving oral sex and couldn’t believe the hero actually enjoyed it. And he would tease her about it and tell her how much he loved it, etc.
The heroine could have been wearing a turtle neck and skirt when they have their first love scene, at a motel(during the investigation)
I think the cover of the book was black. And maybe the heroine’s (now dead) husband was well-off?
Could anyone help me out?
C’mon, Bitchery!
Thrill Me to Death by Roxanne St. Claire
Confessions by Cynthia Eden? Its one of the Battling McQuire Boys series. It seems to match up pretty well.
Might be “Tell me Lies” by Jennifer Crusie?

Hi guys! I’m so sorry I didn’t reply sooner Sarah, CS, MD! Thanks so much for the replies!
I finally got the chance to go to the library for these books. Though they’re all very close, they’re not the one!
(a very r-rated thing which i remember about the book: i remember when the hero is giving the heroine oral sex, he says something along the lines of “drinking her juices,” which is extremely embarrassing for me to type out. but that’s something that i remember if it helps at all! I was reluctant to include that in the main description, haha!)
