Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Brainy Heroine Goes Off into the Wilderness

This HaBO comes from Lisa, who hopes to find what sounds like a contemporary romance:

There was a book I read in the late 90’s. I don’t think it was a category and I can’t remember the cover, but the general plot was librarian or other brainy type ends up in the wilderness and she either hires a survival guy as a guide or somehow runs into him.

She read all of her survival books and so technically, felt she could do everything she needed, like making fire, etc. I am pretty sure she ends up saving his life. It was a really cute, funny read and I remember it fondly and I am in a reading slump right now (7 books DNF ). I think if I found this book again I could read my way out of it.

Can we get Lisa out of her reading slump?

Don’t know the book, but hoping someone does as reading slumps are awful, so lots of empathy Lisa (looking at pile of half read books out of the corner of my eye as I type).

I’m pretty sure this isn’t it, but have you read Heart of Fire by Linda Howard? The heroine is an archaeologist and she hires the hero as her guide through the Amazon. It’s pretty funny and may help you get out of your reading slump.

I read this description and immediately thought Jayne Ann Krentz. I read a lot of JAK in the 90s and they all blend together in my head – something about this makes my JAK radar ping but I don’t have any memories of a specific story.

It isn’t the HaBO but worth mentioning, instant Attraction by Jill Shalvis is a good wilderness with humor romance. Ms. Shalvis rarely disappoints with adding humor to her books. Also How to flirt with a Naked werewolf by Molly Harper was a book slump lifter for me a few years ago. I am in a book slump again and I have a few books half finished, so I sympathize. I cannot seem to find my book groove.
So instead losing myself in a book, I am actually getting things done like spring cleaning, remodeling and yard work. I’m worn out.
I really miss my book groove.

Don’t know the HaBO, but thank you all for adding your own slump lifters. I’ve had too many DNFs and disappointments lately.

A Game of Chance by Linda Howard? They’re stranded in a desert, I think, after a plane crash. She had all kinds of survival gear in her bag, because she never leaves home without it

  7. K says:

I’ve recently been on a Linda Howard reread kick, which is how I know both “A Game of Chance” and “Up Close and Dangerous” – both plane crash books and both awesome – but in the second, the heroine saves the hero’s life right after the plane crash (she keeps her cool and gets things done while he’s busy being unconscious).

If your HABO is a different book, I must know! Gotta love the survival bait/brainy librarian type romance…

I also thought Up Close and Dangerous, but I didn’t think it was cute or funny. It was released in 2007 so the time may be off.

This thread cost me more money than I thought it would. LOL.

Didn’t finish above. Thanks for the suggestions. I had no idea I could search Goodreads for lists with just a couple of key words. I have now bought all of those Linda Howard books you all mentioned. I still cannot find the book I mentioned but back in the 90’s when e-books just started coming out I used to buy books from some place online with a turtle in their logo called hardshell books or something like that. I am wondering if it was’t off of that site and that is why I cannot remember the cover. I think I have 3.5″ disks somewhere with all of those books on it. I’ll have to check those. Jill Shalvis did get me out of my slump with her new one this weekend so I am mostly recovered. You’ve all given me plenty of places to go for similar plots. Thank you all so much!

Joel Blackstone spent ten years as a CEO building Thornquist Gear from a tiny local shop into a major player in the camping and sporting goods marketplace. Joel’s reward for his hard work was old man Thornquist’s promise to sell the shop to him within a year. Unfortunately for Joel, Thornquist dropped dead and bequeathed his empire to a grand-niece in the midwest. A minor adjustment to Joel’s plan—he would just offer to buy the company from the heir.

Leticia Thornquist was deeply saddened by her great-uncle’s death. She saw his bequest of Thornquist Gear as an opportunity to change her life. On the flight to his funeral, she decided to give up her job as a university librarian, move to Seattle, and take over the company. Only one thing stands in her way—Joel Blackstone.

Will Joel and Letty face off in a battle for control of Thornquist Gear or will they find they are perfect partners? (less)

This sounds a little like “Just Dare Me” by Stephanie Bond.

    from the Amazon.com listing…

Marketing exec Gabrielle Flannery isn’t what you’d call the outdoorsy type. But after an embarrassing incident with a potted plant leaves Gabrielle revealing more leg than a Thanksgiving turkey, she decides it’s time to reassert herself. Even if it means going head-to-head with marketing golden boy and the office Hottie McHot, Dell Kingston, over an outdoor gear account…

That is, until Gabrielle and Dell find themselves competing against each other for the account at a wilderness survival weekend. Since he’s in touch with the great outdoors, Dell figures that naturally extends to Gabrielle and those sexy legs of hers…. But Gabrielle has a few tricks up her sleeve.

And nothing stimulates a sexual appetite like a little fresh air, a tiny little tent and a whole lot of libido!

This didn’t ring any bells for me but if the heroine IS a librarian, I do have a Librarians In Romance list over at my blog. However, it’s not an exhaustive list and if the heroine is just brainy (and not a librarian) the hunt will still be on….
