  • A Reckless Desire

A Reckless Desire by Isabella Bradford

    Author: Isabella Bradford
Released: March 1, 2016 by Ballantine Books
    Genre: ,
    Series: Breconridge Brothers #3

For fans of Julia Quinn, Eloisa James, and Sabrina Jeffries: the elegantly seductive third historical romance in Isabella Bradford’s Breconridge Brothers trilogy.

Lord Rivers Fitzroy is as charming and sought-after as his rakish elder brothers, though he immerses himself more in dusty books and scholarly pursuits than in bawdy houses. Yet, Hell-bent on making the most of his remaining bachelorhood now that his father insists he marry, Rivers becomes the favorite of a troupe of Italian dancers. One night, after a performance, the handsome lord is challenged with a most provocative wager: Turn the players’ meek and mousy cousin into the first lady of the London stage.

But Lucia di Rossi is not what she seems. Scorned by the rest of her family, Lucia longs for the respect and stardom of a great actress. Rivers’s wager could be the answer to all her hopes—so long as he understands that she wants to be an actress, not his mistress. The two commence her metamorphosis in earnest—even as passion begins to take center stage. As Lucia’s dreams come true, she fears that it may be Rivers, not she, who is the master performer. Is he only making her believe he cares? Has she found the spotlight only to lose her heart—or will the final curtain reveal a love strong enough to last?

Redheadedgirl says: There’s a wager to turn a meek mouse into a star actress! She just needs to take down her ponytail, right? Right? I’m in.

But there’s something beneath Elijah’s steel-bodied exterior that makes her want to know him more deeply…and surrender to his every demand. But once Elijah’s erotic fantasies become a reality—and he and Violet develop a real romantic connection—he finds himself in a quandary: Is he still the one in control? • The Madwoman Upstairs

The Madwoman Upstairs by Catherine Lowell

    Author: Catherine Lowell
Released: March 1, 2016 by Touchstone
    Genre:

In this smart and enthralling debut in the spirit of The Weird Sisters and Special Topics in Calamity Physics, the only remaining descendant of the Brontë family embarks on a modern-day literary scavenger hunt to find the family’s long-rumored secret estate, using clues her eccentric father left behind.

Samantha Whipple is used to stirring up speculation wherever she goes. As the last remaining descendant of the Brontë family, she’s rumored to have inherited a vital, mysterious portion of the Brontë’s literary estate; diaries, paintings, letters, and early novel drafts; a hidden fortune that’s never been shown outside of the family.

But Samantha has never seen this rumored estate, and as far as she knows, it doesn’t exist. She has no interest in acknowledging what the rest of the world has come to find so irresistible; namely, the sudden and untimely death of her eccentric father, or the cryptic estate he has bequeathed to her.

But everything changes when Samantha enrolls at Oxford University and bits and pieces of her past start mysteriously arriving at her doorstep, beginning with an old novel annotated in her father’s handwriting. As more and more bizarre clues arrive, Samantha soon realizes that her father has left her an elaborate scavenger hunt using the world’s greatest literature. With the aid of a handsome and elusive Oxford professor, Samantha must plunge into a vast literary mystery and an untold family legacy, one that can only be solved by decoding the clues hidden within the Brontë’s own writing.

A fast-paced adventure from start to finish, this vibrant and original novel is a moving exploration of what it means when the greatest truth is, in fact, fiction.

Carrie says: Another homage to Jane Eyre, this one involves the last descendant of the Brontes who has to solve an old family mystery using literary clues.

Forty-eight hours after leaving her husband’s body at the base of the stairs, Tanya Dubois cashes in her credit cards, dyes her hair brown, demands a new name from a shadowy voice over the phone, and flees town. It’s not the first time.

  • Rebel of the Sands

Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton

    Author: Alwyn Hamilton
Released: March 8, 2016 by Viking Books for Young Readers
    Genre: , ,
Series: Rebel of the Sands #1

Mortals rule the desert nation of Miraji, but mythical beasts still roam the wild and remote areas, and rumor has it that somewhere, djinn still perform their magic.  For humans, it’s an unforgiving place, especially if you’re poor, orphaned, or female.

Amani Al’Hiza is all three.  She’s a gifted gunslinger with perfect aim, but she can’t shoot her way out of Dustwalk, the back-country town where she’s destined to wind up wed or dead.

Then she meets Jin, a rakish foreigner, in a shooting contest, and sees him as the perfect escape route. But though she’s spent years dreaming of leaving Dustwalk, she never imagined she’d gallop away on mythical horse—or that it would take a foreign fugitive to show her the heart of the desert she thought she knew.

Rebel of the Sands reveals what happens when a dream deferred explodes—in the fires of rebellion, of romantic passion, and the all-consuming inferno of a girl finally, at long last, embracing her power.

Sarah says: This sentence, about the heroine Amani, got me: “She’s a gifted gunslinger with perfect aim, but she can’t shoot her way out of Dustwalk, the back-country town where she’s destined to wind up wed or dead.”

  • Hanging Mary

    Hanging Mary by Susan Higganbotham

    Author: Susan Higganbotham
Released: March 15, 2016 by Sourcebooks Landmark
    Genre:

The untold story of Lincoln’s Assassination

1864, Washington City. One has to be careful with talk of secession, of Confederate whispers falling on Northern ears. Better to speak only when in the company of the trustworthy. Like Mrs. Surratt.

A widow who runs a small boardinghouse on H Street, Mary Surratt isn’t half as committed to the cause as her son, Johnny. If he’s not delivering messages or escorting veiled spies, he’s invited home men like John Wilkes Booth, the actor who is even more charming in person than he is on the stage.

But when President Lincoln is killed, the question of what Mary knew becomes more important than anything else. Was she a cold-blooded accomplice? Just how far would she go to help her son?

Based on the true case of Mary Surratt, Hanging Mary reveals the untold story of those on the other side of the assassin’s gun.

Elyse says: This historical novel is set around the events of the Lincoln assassination and tells the story of the first woman executed by the US government.

  • Hard Rain

    Genre: ,
    Series: The Montana Hamiltons #4

But they soon have bigger problems when they make a gruesome discovery—human remains revealed by a recent rainstorm. Remains that will dredge up old Hamilton family mysteries…and bring about a scandal that could threaten all Harper’s loved ones.

With her father running for president, every move Harper makes is under scrutiny. But despite the risks, she’s determined to uncover the truth about her family’s role in a long-ago murder. If she can trust him enough, Brody will be more than an ally. He could be the only thing standing between Harper and an enemy intent on keeping the past buried forever.

Sarah says: I know – it’s suspense. And BJ Daniels has scared the poodle out of me on several occasions. But I’m supremely curious about this book, in part because it’s Daniels and in part because I’m a sucker for the “been secretly in love with him/her for years” trope.

  • Jane Steele

    Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye

    Author: Lyndsay Faye
    Released: March 22, 2016 by G.P. Putnam's Sons
    Genre: ,

A reimagining of Jane Eyre as a gutsy, heroic serial killer, from the author whose work The New York Times described as “riveting” and The Wall Street Journal called “thrilling.”

    “Reader, I murdered him.”

A sensitive orphan, Jane Steele suffers first at the hands of her spiteful aunt and predatory cousin, then at a grim school where she fights for her very life until escaping to London, leaving the corpses of her tormentors behind her. After years of hiding from the law while penning macabre “last confessions” of the recently hanged, Jane thrills at discovering an advertisement.  Her aunt has died and her childhood home has a new master: Mr. Charles Thornfield, who seeks a governess.

Burning to know whether she is in fact the rightful heir, Jane takes the position incognito, and learns that Highgate House is full of marvelously strange new residents—the fascinating but caustic Mr. Thornfield, an army doctor returned from the Sikh Wars, and the gracious Sikh butler Mr. Sardar Singh, whose history with Mr. Thornfield appears far deeper and darker than they pretend. As Jane catches ominous glimpses of the pair’s violent history and falls in love with the gruffly tragic Mr. Thornfield, she faces a terrible dilemma: can she possess him—body, soul, and secrets—without revealing her own murderous past?

A satirical romance about identity, guilt, goodness, and the nature of lies, by a writer who Matthew Pearl calls “superstar-caliber” and whose previous works Gillian Flynn declared “spectacular,” Jane Steele is a brilliant and deeply absorbing book inspired by Charlotte Brontë’s classic Jane Eyre.

Amanda says: I am all about a book with Jane Eyre elements and a serial killing heroine who targets awful men.

  • The Nest

The Nest by Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney

    Author: Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney
Released: March 22, 2016 by Ecco
    Genre:

A warm, funny and acutely perceptive debut novel about four adult siblings and the fate of the shared inheritance that has shaped their choices and their lives.

Every family has its problems. But even among the most troubled, the Plumb family stands out as spectacularly dysfunctional. Years of simmering tensions finally reach a breaking point on an unseasonably cold afternoon in New York City as Melody, Beatrice, and Jack Plumb gather to confront their charismatic and reckless older brother, Leo, freshly released from rehab. Months earlier, an inebriated Leo got behind the wheel of a car with a nineteen-year-old waitress as his passenger. The ensuing accident has endangered the Plumbs’ joint trust fund, “The Nest,” which they are months away from finally receiving. Meant by their deceased father to be a modest mid-life supplement, the Plumb siblings have watched The Nest’s value soar along with the stock market and have been counting on the money to solve a number of self-inflicted problems.

Melody, a wife and mother in an upscale suburb, has an unwieldy mortgage and looming college tuition for her twin teenage daughters. Jack, an antiques dealer, has secretly borrowed against the beach cottage he shares with his husband, Walker, to keep his store open. And Bea, a once-promising short-story writer, just can’t seem to finish her overdue novel. Can Leo rescue his siblings and, by extension, the people they love? Or will everyone need to reimagine the futures they’ve envisioned? Brought together as never before, Leo, Melody, Jack, and Beatrice must grapple with old resentments, present-day truths, and the significant emotional and financial toll of the accident, as well as finally acknowledge the choices they have made in their own lives.

This is a story about the power of family, the possibilities of friendship, the ways we depend upon one another and the ways we let one another down. In this tender, entertaining, and deftly written debut, Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney brings a remarkable cast of characters to life to illuminate what money does to relationships, what happens to our ambitions over the course of time, and the fraught yet unbreakable ties we share with those we love.

Amanda says: Since I come from a dysfunctional family, I’m a sucker for ones in fiction. I’ve also heard about this book everywhere.

  • Down to Ash

Down to Ash by Melissa Blue

    Author: Melissa Blue
Released: March 24, 2016 by Confessions of a Romance Author
    Genre: , ,
    Series: #dirtysexygeeks #2

She’s his best friend’s baby sister, and he’s too broken to deserve her.

Victor Yang spent six years in the Army as a bomb tech, and when he came back from war, he was half out of his mind and completely dangerous to anyone who got too close to him. His friend saved his life, and now he’s repaying that debt in the worst way possible.

He shouldn’t fantasize about Ashley’s touch, her taste. Definitely shouldn’t act on those urges. But he doesn’t half-ass mistakes. One explosive night later, he’s learned how sweet her forbidden fruit tastes, and is coming back for seconds. And if his friend finds out Victor knows exactly how Ash’s skin feels beneath his tongue, his best friend will kill him.

Sarah says: Though I often find the “my best friend’s younger sibling is off limits” trope to be thin and flimsy as a source of tension, I’m antsy waiting for the release date for my pre-order for this book. Two separate people have wheeze-squeed at me about this book and the series, so I’m supremely looking forward to it.

Everyone expects Billie Bridgerton to marry one of the Rokesby brothers. The two families have been neighbors for centuries, and as a child the tomboyish Billie ran wild with Edward and Andrew. Either one would make a perfect husband… someday.

Sometimes you fall in love with exactly the person you think you should…

    Or not.

There is only one Rokesby Billie absolutely cannot tolerate, and that is George. He may be the eldest and heir to the earldom, but he’s arrogant, annoying, and she’s absolutely certain he detests her. Which is perfectly convenient, as she can’t stand the sight of him, either.

But sometimes fate has a wicked sense of humor…

Because when Billie and George are quite literally thrown together, a whole new sort of sparks begins to fly. And when these lifelong adversaries finally kiss, they just might discover that the one person they can’t abide is the one person they can’t live without…

Carrie says: No one writes Regency humor quite like our beloved Julia Quinn.

    Author: Theresa Romain
Released: March 29, 2016 by Zebra
    Genre: ,

    INDECENTLY LUCKY

As a lieutenant in the Royal Navy, Benedict Frost had the respect of every man on board—and the adoration of the women in every port. When injury ends his naval career, the silver-tongued libertine can hardly stomach the boredom. Not after everything—and everyone—he’s experienced. Good thing a new adventure has just fallen into his lap…

When courtesan Charlotte Perry learns the Royal Mint is offering a reward for finding a cache of stolen gold coins, she seizes the chance to build a new life for herself. As the treasure hunt begins, she realizes her tenacity is matched only by Benedict’s—and that sometimes adversaries can make the best allies. But when the search for treasure becomes a discovery of pleasure, they’ll be forced to decide if they can sacrifice the lives they’ve always dreamed of for a love they’ve never known…

Redheadedgirl says: Former courtesan and former Naval officer hunts for treasure. Also he’s blind. And it’s Romain.

  • Six Degrees of Scandal

Six Degrees of Scandal by Caroline Linden

    Author: Caroline Linden
Released: March 29, 2016 by Avon
    Genre: ,
    Series: Scandalous #4

Olivia Townsend is in trouble and out of options. Pursued by a dangerous man in search of a lost treasure she doesn’t possess, she’s got only two things in her favor: her late husband’s diary, which she was never meant to see… and the man who was her first—and only—love. Losing him broke her heart, though she’s been careful to hide it for the last ten years. But when he comes to her aid and vows to stand by her, no matter what, she can’t help but hope things will be different for them this time.

James Weston has blamed himself for letting Olivia down when she needed him years ago, and now he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe—and to win her trust again. He’s confident he can outwit the villain chasing Olivia. But being so near her again threatens to expose every secret in his heart … even those that he swore would stay hidden forever.

Sarah says: Historical! Second change love story! There’s a suspense element but this month, I’m ignoring my trope and sub-genre preferences in favor of books I’m very curious about. Plus, Linden writes great dialogue and I adore dialogue.

  • To Lure a Proper Lady

To Lure a Proper Lady by Ashlyn Macnamara

    Author: Ashlyn Macnamara
Released: March 29, 2016 by Loveswept
    Genre: ,
    Series: Duke-Defying Daughters #1

In this steamy novel from Ashlyn Macnamara—“a born storyteller” (Jennifer McQuiston) who “brings all the elegance and romance of the Regency to life” (Tessa Dare)—a dutiful young lady tries to resist the charms of a rogue from the legendary Bow Street Runners.

When Lady Elizabeth Wilde and her sisters are summoned once again to their chronically anxious father’s deathbed, she’s shocked to find that his worries are at last justified. He’s terribly ill, and Lizzie suspects poison. But when she seeks help from the Bow Street Runners, her request is answered by a rough-hewn rogue known only as Dysart. Though his irreverent charm by turns shocks and captivates her, a man of Dysart’s background is an altogether inappropriate choice for a duke’s daughter—isn’t he?

Although Dysart has his reasons to disdain polite society, the promise of supplemental income from a noble’s coffers is too tempting to deny. But if Dysart means to apprehend the culprit who poisoned the duke, he’ll need to avoid any and all distractions—like the delicious swish of Lady Elizabeth’s hips. Yet as the investigation begins to unearth secrets he’d rather remain hidden, Dysart must decide at a moment’s notice whether to hold Elizabeth at arm’s length . . . or pull her dangerously close.

Redheadedgirl: Proper lady needs Bow Street Runner to determine if her father, the duke, is being slowly murdered or not. Also, the booty on that cover is on point.

  1. I am so excited for Donna Thorland’s The Dutch Girl (March 1) – she writes such witty, fabulous and SMART Revolutionary America-set historical romances, and my pre-order of this one just downloaded onto my Kindle, hurrah!

(Also so excited about Because of Miss Bridgerton! And Rebel of the Sands is really wonderful.)

  2. Frances says:

Janice Kay Johnson’s “The Closer He Gets” just downloaded onto my iPad and I am looking forward to reading it tomorrow.
I don’t think I have ever read a Julia Quinn and “”Because of Miss Bridgerton ” sounds like fun so, since it appears to be number 1 in a series and the commentary suggests she includes humour , I think I will try it. Also the Caroline Linden sounds interesting and the one book of Jackie Ashenden I have read was outstanding ……. so it really will be a month to hide my wallet if I want to stay within budget.

  3. Holly Bush says:

I’m looking forward to Thorland’s The Dutch Girl and America’s First Daughter by Dray and Kamoie, too. Both look spectacular and I love the writing styles.

  4. MirandaB says:

    There’s also the next C. S. Harris.

  5. Olivia says:

Looking forward to Shalvis’s new book and Feehan’s next Carpathian series. Finally Gary’s story!

  6. bev says:

C.S. Harris, Anne Bishop, and Patricia Briggs are all releasing books this month. Makes me very happy.

  7. barbara says:

Just downloaded “Finding Their Balance” (Neighborly Affection #5) by M.Q. Barber

  8. LML says:

@Frances: Oh, what fun with all of Julia Quinn’s books ahead of you.

  9. Vasha says:

    K. J. Charles has a new “Charm of Magpies” spinoff novel coming out. You can read the prequel novella already. Although I feel she isn’t devoting as much care to this series as she is to her “Society of Gentlemen” series (publishing 3-4 novels a year, something’s got to give!) I’m still looking forward to it.

  10. Heather M says:

Oh man, Mary Surratt AND a killer Jane Eyre? There goes my TBR pile…

  11. denise says:

I was given a copy of A RECKLESS DESIRE from netgalley. I enjoyed it.

  12. Cerulean says:

The Earl Next Door is currently $1.99 on Amazon.

  13. LauraL says:

I pre-ordered both Because of Miss Bridgerton and Fortune Favors the Wicked. I may have to take a day off when the books arrive. Two favorite authors on the same day. Squee! To Lure a Proper Lady is also on the Wish List as I enjoyed the Eton Boys series last year. Hmmm, maybe two days off.

  14. Teev says:

I went to look at Tyranny of Petticoats and am frustrated by the lack of an author list. There’s no look inside either, which might have yielded that information.

I did one-click the Earl Next Door because for $1.99 I will take a chance on a new author and that one did let me look inside and she seems decent and American heiress + renovations + POV of nosy Parker old lady neighbor = I’m in.

  15. Amanda says:

@Teev: Books don’t usually do a “look inside” if they haven’t been released yet. I was trying to peek inside the new Chrissy Teigen cookbook before I bought it last week and I could not. But Goodreads has an author list for Petticoats:

    With stories by:
    J. Anderson Coats
    Andrea Cremer
    Y. S. Lee
    Katherine Longshore
    Marie Lu
    Kekla Magoon
    Marissa Meyer
    Saundra Mitchell
    Beth Revis
    Caroline Richmond
    Lindsay Smith
    Jessica Spotswood
    Robin Talley
    Leslye Walton
    Elizabeth Wein

  16. Teev says:

Oh, and I am so excited for that new Romain. I’m neutral on horses and their racing but blind sailors and courtesans hunting treasure? Shut up and take my money!

  17. Teev says:

    Oh thank you Amanda!!

  18. Susan says:

Yep, in addition to the new CS Harris, Patricia Briggs, and Anne Bishop books, a new book in the Amanda Stevens’s Graveyard Queen series is finally coming out at the end of the month. Yay. I can also recommend the audio for the Bishop and Stevens series so far (haven’t listened to the other two).

  19. Mara says:

Second the excitement for “Jane Steele”– I’ve seen so many good reviews the premise is 100% my catnip

  20. Cordy (not stuck in spam filter sub-type) says:

I am tempted to check out “Kidnapped by the billionaire” just because I really, really want to know what happened in a billionaire’s life to make him decide to pick up some work as a bodyguard.

  21. Mary Star says:

@Stephanie Burgis, thank you for the Donna Thorland rec. She’s a new author to me and I just ordered The Turncoat from the library.

  22. Amy says:

INCREDIBLY excited about the new Anne Bishop, Chloe Neill, and Patricia Briggs urban fantasy heaven!!!! Also Ruthie Knox’s Madly (sequel to adorable Truly), and new Sabrina Jeffries and Jill Shalvis books!

  23. Hera says:

I’m really looking forward to Us, the sequel to Him by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy.

And Courtney Milan has a novella that might be out this month. . . maybe. . ..

  24. Heather S says:

@Susan: Thanks for the heads up on the new Amanda Stevens! I read the other three books a few years ago and have been wondering when she would write another GQ adventure.

  25. Joanna says:

Interesting – the heroine of the Annie Kelly book is named Carson – in my family that was a man’s name, including my father’s.

  26. Frances says:

Wow thank you SBs for alerting me to a new Patricia Briggs that I somehow left off my list of eagerly anticipated 2016 books. Only fly in the ointment is that it is $16.99 Australian for an ebook. The greed of the publishers continues to annoy this reader.

  27. KarenF says:

Lots of books from my faves!

But I just had to comment that the phrase “scared the poodle out of me,” had me giggling through the rest of the post.

  28. […] releases: Fiction Vixen (romance), Dear Author (romance), Smart Bitches (romance), and Gizmodo […]

  29. Katharina says:

One of my March-TBRs is already read (Melting Shadows by Rhea Rhodan), but I’m really looking forward to tomorrow when I can finally read the new Bishop and Briggs books.
Furthermore I’m waiting for the next book in the Cold Fury Hockey series (Hawke) and the next one from the New York Finest – Cuff Me (there was a review of the first book of the series somewhere on this blog)

  30. Chelle says:

Sequel to ‘Him?’ Yes please!! Clickety-click! .I loved Jamie and Wes in ‘Him!’

Thank you thank you thank you @Hera!!
