Written in Red, and a Pile of Romances

Any books you recommend in the sale collection?

Written in Red by Anne Bishop

RECOMMENDED BY MANY: Written in Red by Anne Bishop is a Kindle Daily Deal today that’s being price matched elsewhere. Yay! I have this on my TBR after Jane talked about it in a recent podcast, and many other people echoed that recommendation in the comments.

Last year, when I did a series of Hanukkah giveaways, one of the questions was which author do you wish were more widely known? Bishop was a top answer, particularly for this series.

This is the first book in The Others series, and it has a 4+ star average. Readers who loved it couldn’t put it down – and at $1.99, that’s a low-risk trial price if you haven’t read it yet, eh?

As a “cassandra sangue,” or blood prophet, Meg Corbyn can see the future when her skin is cut–a gift that feels more like a curse. Meg’s Controller keeps her enslaved so he can have full access to her visions. But when she escapes, the only safe place Meg can hide is at the Lakeside Courtyard–a business district operated by the Others.

Shape-shifter Simon Wolfgard is reluctant to hire the stranger who inquires about the Human Liaison job. First, he senses she’s keeping a secret, and second, she doesn’t smell like human prey. Yet a stronger instinct propels him to give Meg the job. And when he learns the truth about Meg and that she’s wanted by the government, he’ll have to decide if she’s worth the fight between humans and the Others that will surely follow.

I’m currently waiting – very impatiently – for the third book in the series. Anne Bishop is an excellent author! If you haven’t yet read this book go for it!

So, yesterday’s post? Forgot to mention shape-shifters… Damn you inability to delay gratification and Amazon 1-click.

  3. CelineB says:

I enjoyed From the Moment We Met and Summer in Nappa by Marina Adair from the sale collection. The Anne Stuart series seemed like the same story over and over again done with varying degrees of success but none were great to me.

Written in Red is so amazing. I just wish the second one would go on sale.

  4. Michelle says:

Loved Written in Red and the audiobook is well done also. Also the Ultimate Cake Mix cooke book is on sale for 99 cents. One review said recipes looked good but no index.

  5. Jiil B says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I LOVE the Others series. I read a e-galley of Book 3 and it was also great. I always have to laugh when the wolves refer to Meg – the human- as a squeaky toy because of the noises she makes when they play chase.

  6. Lostshadows says:

Loved Written in Red and Murder of Crows. I just wish MoC would go on sale too at some point.

  7. KMarie says:

I love the Other series also. Does anyone who loves this series have recommendations for other Anne Bishop books or series?

  8. I’m currently reading the 3rd book (thanks, NetGalley!) and it’s incredible. Anne Bishop has become one of my favourite writers

It’s funny because I was just reading the Gimme post and WIR definitely flirts with SB Sarah’s list. The heroine is seeking refuge in winter and winter is definitely a presence. Simon does not under stand his reaction to Meg at all. He also has some definite thoughts about her hair, lol.

  10. Adietz says:

I got halfway though and couldn’t finish Written in Red. Trigger warning for self-mutilation, obviously. I’m generally a fan of PNR, and I appreciated the author’s fresh take on the genre. A solid effort on the humor, but it still fell short for me. The plot moves slowly. I guess I need the heroine to do a little more than deliver the mail and cut herself. Seriously, that is her super power. Wow.
