Remember the DA BWAHA, our March Madness tourney of books? It’s back, and we need your help for the slate of books. The categories are as follows:
YA
Paranormal
Novel with Strong Romantic Elements
Historical
Erotic Romance
GLBT
Category
Contemporary
The books nominated must be published in 2008, first printing (paperback reprints of older books are not eligible). Self published books are not eligible. Please tell us what books should make the slate of 64 by emailing us at dabwaha@gmail.com. We already have some ideas of what books will land a coveted spot, but we want to hear from you.
For the benefit of those of us relatively new here, can you please explain what this award is for? Is it a best or worst of the genre, or something else entirely? Thanks.
Good heavens, I’m a bit of a moron this morning. Sorry! The DA BWAHA is the Dear Author Bitchery Writing Award for Hellagood Authors. Last year we did it like a NCAA Tournament. There were 64 books nominated, and Dear Author and Smart Bitches hosted polls for voting (one vote per person).
Readers could pick a slate of winners, trying to predict who would win the one-on-one matchups and progress through the tournament to the championship – like NCAA Basketball’s tournament except with romance novels. There were reader prizes for most accurate bracket, and the authors whose books made the final four and the author who won received prizes as well.
So basically we want to know what you think the best books of last year were, and based on nominations we’re going to select our slate of 64 books to start the tourney. Then readers can pick their winners, create their brackets, and watch as books go up against one another across genres to find out the winner.
Oh, yay! Maybe this year I’ll do a display at our library of the tournament books… if I can get away with explaining to patrons that “B” stands for “Bitchery.” 😀
Will we be able to know the nominees sooner this year? Last year I started reading my way through them when they were announced, but it wasn’t enough time for me to get through more than two or three of them.
Spamword suddenly98 – suddenly, I will have lots of new romance books on my to-read list!
I am in again even though my ass got majorily beat. 🙁
So does fantasy romance fall in paranormal?
Oh, and what about urban fantasy? Is that also in paranormal? Or does it not fall into any category since it’s usually not romance?
Last year Patricia Briggs and Lois McMaster Bujold were both in the Paranormal catagory, so that’s where I nominated them this year. If left to my own devices I probably would have put LMB (The Sharing Knife series) in Strong Romantic Elements. Possibly Briggs too, for last year’s book. But Cry Wolf’s romance story line is much more prominent than Blood Bound’s, so I think it definitely fits in the Paranormal catagory.
I did exactly the same.
I’m trying to figure out where Kushiel’s Mercy would fit.
It’s shelved with sci fi / fantasy at the bookstores but I guess would fit under paranormal in the BWAHA lists?
I was so confoozled last year. I didn’t realize that we had to pick all the match winners before the whole thing started. I thought we were supposed to wait and pick them as each match was posted. And we DID pick as they were posted by voting, but then THOSE votes determined the winners of the picks that were picked BEFORE the matches started. And now my brain hurts again.
