Links and Sales and Christmas Cheer!

Book in a shopping cartLinks! I have some!

BookRX, a link I found via Rose Fox on Twitter, recommends books based on what you've talked about on Twitter. I'm really curious if you find it accurate. I put my Twitter feed in, and it told me I needed to read 50 Shades of Grey about 5 different times. HA! The results also indicate a rather flexible definition of romance, but still, it's a neat way to collect recommendation suggestions.

The Galaxy Express has three collections of science fiction romances ready to give away for the holidays. Yay!

Today only, you can download Dee J. Adams' Dangerous Race from the Carina Press website with code DANGEROUSFREE.

And now, deals!

The Bronze Horseman - With Bonus Materials!

The Bronze Horseman with Bonus Material by Paullina Simons is $1.99 digitally. WHAT do you think is the horseman's Bonus Material?!

The golden skies, the translucent twilight, the white nights, all hold the promise of youth, of love, of eternal renewal. The war has not yet touched this city of fallen grandeur, or the lives of two sisters, Tatiana and Dasha Metanova, who share a single room in a cramped apartment with their brother and parents. Their world is turned upside down when Hitler's armies attack Russia and begin their unstoppable blitz to Leningrad.

Yet there is light in the darkness. Tatiana meets Alexander, a brave young officer in the Red Army. Strong and self-confident, yet guarding a mysterious and troubled past, he is drawn to Tatiana—and she to him. Starvation, desperation, and fear soon grip their city during the terrible winter of the merciless German siege. Tatiana and Alexander's impossible love threatens to tear the Metanova family apart and expose the dangerous secret Alexander so carefully protects—a secret as devastating as the war itself—as the lovers are swept up in the brutal tides that will change the world and their lives forever.

The Four Corners of the Sky

The Four Corners of the Sky by Michael Malone is $2.99 digitally.

In small towns between the North Carolina Piedmont and the coast the best scenery is often in the sky. On flat sweeps of red clay and scrub pine the days move monotonously, safely, but above, in the blink of an eye, dangerous clouds can boil out of all four corners of the sky…The flat slow land starts to shiver and anything can happen. In such a storm, on Annie Peregrine's seventh birthday, her father gave her the airplane and minutes later drove out of her life.

Twenty years is a long time to be without a father, and, for Navy pilot Annie Peregrine-Goode, the sky has become a home the earth has never been. So when her father calls out of the blue to ask for a dying wish—one both absurd and mysterious—no is the easiest of answers. Until she hears that the reward is the one thing she always wante. Thus begins an enchanting novel that bursts with energy from the first pages, and sweeps you off on a journey of unforgettable characters, hilarious encounters, and haunting secrets.

The Unknown Ajax

The Unknown Ajax by Georgette Heyer is $2.99 digitally.

When the irascible Lord Darracott's eldest son dies unexpectedly, the noble family must accept their estranged Yorkshire cousin as heir apparent. They are convinced he will prove to be a sadly vulgar person, but nothing could have prepared the beleaguered family for the arrival of Major Hugo Darracott.

His clever and beautiful cousin Anthea is sure there's more to the gentle giant than Hugo's innocent blue eyes and broad Yorkshire brogue would lead one to believe. But even she doesn't guess what he's capable of, until a family crisis arises and only Hugo can preserve the family's honor, leading everybody on a merry chase in the process.

I don’t know if it’s available on the US site, but for us lucky Canucks, kobo’s Boxing Week sale has started – up to 80% off select books (usual pricing caveats apply – naughty list for them :P)

  2. Thanks so much for the link love!

  3. Darlynne says:

Michael Malone is such a fabulous writer. His “Handling Sin” is on my bury-me-with-this-book list and “The Four Corners of the Sky” is excellent. He was also the head writer of “One Life to Live” during the heady and angsty days of Patrick and Marty.

I just happened to look at my Amazon wishlist and saw that Melissa Ford’s “Life From Scratch” is now FREE (instead of $14.95). I don’t even remember where I heard about this book, but I am so excited because heartbreak, romance and cooking!

  4. Kelly says:

I adored the Bronze Horseman, but the bonus material better be a giant box of tissues, chocolate and a link to discount Prozac. Good lord there hasn’t been a book that had me sobbing with love, hurt and crazy wartime angst this much ever.

Thanks – just snatched it up!

The Unknown Ajax by Georgette Heyer is one of my favorites.  Hugo is a great character.

Just tried to get Dangerous Race for FREE from the Carina site, and I got a message that the deal had expired.  Maybe it was for yesterday, not today?

  8. Rose says:

The bonus material for The Bronze Horseman is an excerpt from the book about Alexander’s parents. Considering their fate as we know it, that book will be even more depressing than TBH. Merry Christmas, indeed. I’m not reading it.

But I did get the book anyway, cheap e-editions of my favorite books are an easy sell.

I tried BookRx just now. They almost got me right on Politics and Social Science, though not completely. Science and Technology was way out in left field – I haven’t written code in 20+ years and don’t really care to read about it. Food – meh – I did bookmark one of the books to look at later. Business? Didn’t recognize anything about myself. OTOH, I’d already read much of the SciFi/Fantasy they recommended so that was right on. Fiction was a mixed bag.

It looks as if they take key words, hashtags, and people you follow and mash them together to make recommendations. This would work better is some of the words were
not about this I discuss that I dislike. Also, my tweets are heavily about moms and kids b/c I’m a pediatrician. This does not, however, indicate a preference for mom books/mom plots.

It was not a totally useless experience, I will check back with them, but I think it needs a good deal of refining.
