24. An Interview with Nalini Singh

Surprise, surprise, Nalini Singh was in our hotel room, so we tied her to a chair and interviewed her. She's live, not on Skype, and it's a really fun and casual conversation because we didn't plan to do this. We had the microphone and a half hour to chat. We did attempt to get real answers out of her, and were totally unsuccessful, despite threats and stares of doom.

You'll hear about how Nalini approaches her writing and her series, and we talk about heroines, reality television, reading romance, and Gwen Stefani, too.

Here are some of the books, foods, and songs we talked about in the podcast:

And, here is the entry we refer to on DearAuthor in which Jane argues that Kaleb is the Ghost

If you have content suggestions, tips on how to do this whole thing better, or general wtf-ery comments, email us. It’s all welcome because a) we are new to this and b) we don’t really know what we are doing so the wtf comments are probably all valid. The email address for the podcast is sbjpodcast@gmail.com.

Thanks to Jane, and to Sassy Outwater, who provided the new and original music for this podcast, and will be featured in future podcasts as well. This week’s song features Sassy on the fiddle and JD on the piano, and is called “Fiddler on the Loose.”

  1. Jo Dudding says:

    Loved the interview with Nalini
Your picture shows the English version of the marmite packaging, not the NZ version which you can see here.  http:\http://www.marmite.co.nz  The are ads on TV in NZ at the moment saying don’t freak out, marmite will be back.

  2. Diane says:

    Love Nalini Singh books.

  3. I’m supposed to be working… but I’m listening to this podcast. ‘Nuff said *g*

  4. Am I allowed to say I prefer Vegemite to Marmite? *ducks for cover*

  5. ScottKPickering says:

    Great interview!

  6. azteclady1 says:

    That was awesome!

I did have some issues with sound—it seems that there are parts of the conversation where some of you are talking away from the microphone and/or someone talking far from the microphone. (Thought this could be my computer/speakers, I suppose)

  7. MarieC says:

Great interview! I love Ms. Singh’s books; kind of torn between sad and glad that she didn’t give up any info!

  8. SB Sarah says:

Nope, my fault. We were seated around a desk, and Jane was on the far side. I did rotate the mic as best I could, but if Angie spoke, she was across the room and the mic didn’t pick her up (I edited out most of the parts where she spoke). It was impromptu so I didn’t see the unevenness until I went to edit. I’m sorry!

  9. wingednike says:

My love for Nalini has increased 10-fold because of her love for “A Secret Love”

  10. Jamarleo says:

Is there any music by Sassy Outwater that is for sale/downloadable?

  11. SB Sarah says:

I don’t believe there is, but I will ask her! She’s very talented, isn’t she?

  12. Jamarleo says:

I love it- I tried to find a link to her stuff but came up with some old sites.

  13. azteclady1 says:

Oh no, not at all, please—this interview is such an awesome treat!

I’m sorry to have missed anything Ms James said (I’m a fan of hers, as you know) but I’m glad to know that, this time at least, it’s not user error.

  14. ms bookjunkie says:

I need to reread A SECRET LOVE. Also, did you know that Marmite is banned in Denmark? 🙂

  15. Melanie says:

I so totally enjoyed the podcast – still laughing at Nalini talking about Fairy Bread – loved that too as a kid (though I’m an Aussie).  And Aussie’s call Cotton Candy (which Kiwi’s call Candy Floss) Fairy Floss.  No, I have no idea why either! 🙂

The only problem with these podcasts is that I inevitably come away with another 3 or 4 books I really want to read! 🙂

  16. I am supposed to be studying for my exams but i couldn’t stop myself when i saw the post about her interview! It was amazing to hear from her she’s one of my fav author’s and i loved seeing she was such a down-to-earth and “completely non-scary person”.  also added some more books to be TBR pile thank you Nalini Singh. Amazing interview!

  17. Sarah Hipple says:

    This interview made me smile.
    And buy a few books.
And crave nutella (but not fairy bread or marmite).

    Thanks!
