Love Between the Covers: Romance at the Library of Congress

Love Between the Covers LogoIf you’re in DC, heads up: there are two free (YES FREE) events the second week of February that you will want to know about.

Tuesday, February 10, 2015:

You can attend a sneak preview of Love Between the Covers, a documentary about the romance community and the women who write, read, and work within it.

Where & When:
Library of Congress
Jefferson Building, Coolidge Auditorium
6:30 pm – 8:30 pm, intro and screening
8:30 pm – 9:30 pm, Q&A

Cost: FREE, CHEEZY BREAD, FREE!

You can register now to attend the  screening of Love Between the Covers which will be followed by a Q&A with director Laurie Kahn, editor William A. Anderson, and featured authors Beverly Jenkins, Radclyffe, Eloisa James, and Joanne Lockyer.

This event is free and open to the public, but tickets are limited and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

But wait, there’s more! YES. We’ll sell you the whole seat but you’ll only need the edge!

Wednesday, February 11, 2015:

You can attend a one-day conference at the Library of Congress (as you do) focused entirely on romance fiction (yes, way), titled What is Love? Romance Fiction in the Digital Age.

Where & When:
Library of Congress
Madison Building
9:00am – 5:00 pm

Cost: FREE, CHEEZY BREAD, FREE! This event is free and open to the public. But again, space is limited, and likely less than 100 spaces remain for the conference. You can register online for the conference, too.

The conference schedule is online, and there are a number of panels featuring romance authors and scholars. I’m part of a panel on romance communities that begins at 1:45.

Plus there are a number of interactive activities planned, including the opportunity to design a romance cover, write the first paragraph of a romance, or make suggestions for Popular Romance Project/Library of Congress/American Library Association nationwide public library programs.

I’m also researching a possible Bitchery Gathering in DC while I’m there. If you’re in the DC area, and you’d be interested in attending such an event on a weekday evening, please let me know, either in the comments below or by email? Thanks!

If you’re interested in the documentary preview or the one-day conference, I think you should register soon,  as it is likely they will fill to capacity.  I hope I’ll see you at the documentary premiere or at the conference at the Library of Congress — or both!

I’m on the wrong side of the pond, unfortunately, but this sounds amazing!

  6. Very interested in a Bitchery gathering in DC — but not sure I can swing the conference during the day.

  7. Sue says:

    Yes – Yes – Yes
I would love to attend a DC Bitchery meet up!

  8. Cassandra B. says:

I just registered for both events! Hopefully, I can get the time off work (I think it will be fine or I wouldn’t have requested the tickets). I would also be interested in a Bitchery Gathering!

  9. I’ll be part of Washington Romance Writers’ team of volunteers on Wednesday, so please stop and say hello! This is going to be such a great event. And I’m definitely in for a Bitchery gathering that night.

  10. Nerdalisque says:

Not sure about the LoC events, but I’m definitely in for a gathering! Huzzah! Meeting fellow members of the Bitchery!

Thanks for the heads up. I registered for the movie, but can’t really take a day off work for the conference. Sign me up for the gathering of the smart bitches.

  21. Jennifer O. says:

I’m going to the movie the night before, but not the conference (if only it was not a weekday, or I didn’t need to work). I’d be interested in some sort of meet up.

  22. Sarah H says:

I signed up for the conference and if the babysitter stars align and there’s no snow day, I’ll be there the whole day grinning like an idiot. It would depend on the timing, but a meet-up sounds great.

  23. LadyWesley says:

Hope to find you at the screening. Will you be wearing a giant Smart Bitch name tag?
