Cover Awe: Kissing on a Stack of Pancakes

This crop of covers just fills me with joy!

The Stranger I Wed by Harper St. George. A woman in a voluminous, rich purple gown is running amidst some green foliage. The skirts are billowing behind her, creating a backdrop for the title in white text. Behind the title fond is gorgeous gold embroidery of flowers and fern-like leaves.

Cover design by Rita Frangie Batour

Sarah: The “Wearing a big giant dress on the cover” trend is very old and established but I LOVE the use of texture to resemble embroidery here

Kiki: Harper’s always got the gowns!

Claudia: She sure does!! A recent one had a gorgeous emerald green one!!

Amanda: We’re still unpacking at the house, but this just makes me want to unearth my Harper St. George books and dive back in.

Sneezy: I love the use of embroidery too! Plus the plant pattern sets the atmosphere really well with the forest setting.

Last Call at the Local by Sarah Gunder Ruiz. An illustrated cover of two people sitting at barstools at a window looking out at a quaint Irish village. The woman has red wavy hair and is wearing a green hoodie, red shirt, black leggings, and brown boots. She's perched on a stool, holding a short rocks glass, and smiling. A guitar case leans against the wall behind her. Next to her is a man with short, dark hair. A neck tattoo can be seen over the collar of his long-sleeve light gray sweatshirt with the sleeves pushed up to his elbows. He is wearing dark jeans, holding a pint glass, and leaning against the adjacent stool. A black, long-haired cat sits on the window ledge behind him. The pub is green wood paneling and the wooden window frame frames the couple and cat.

Cover art by Guy Shield

Amanda: I just think this one is really sweet and looks like normal people in a normal setting. Bonus points for the bar cat!

Elyse: It looks so cozy.

Sarah: The composition with the wall at the top drawing the eyes down is so smart.

Sneezy: Awww They look like they’re having a good time. Also the cat’s tail looks so swishy!

The Honey Witch by Sydney J. Shields. A tan colored, two story estate sits on a green hill in the background. We are looking at it through a keyhole shaped window with a wrought iron gate at the bottom and its borders surrounded by delicate pastel flowers.

Cover design by Lisa Maria Pompilio

Sarah: Sapphic witches with gorgeous cover art.

Is it a skull? Is it a keyhole? IS IT BOTH.

Amanda: Okay that’s is beautiful.

Lara: That’s gorgeous!

Sneezy: Reminds me of my hot lesbian garden witch friend. One time she was telling me her garden was a mess and she wanted to work on it soon. Then she shared a picture and I didn’t understand what she meant. It looked great! Then she was like, “Oh, thanks, but it only looks like that because everything is blooming.” Excuse me. Ma’am. EVERYTHING blooms for you???

Till There Was You by Lindsay Hameroff. An illustrated cover of a couple kissing on top of a stack of pancakes smothered in syrup and topped with blueberries. She is wearing jeans, brown boots, and a pink salmon colored sweater. Her hair is half in a bun and half down. He is wearing jeans, blue sneakers, a brown sweater, and a white backwards baseball cap. The sky blends from purple to pink to orange to yellow and the shape of a city lingers in the background.

Cover illustration by Petra Braun

Amanda: They’re about to smooch on top of a stack of pancakes and I just love that.

Elyse: Now I want pancakes.

Shana: Me too.

Sneezy: I’ll get a batch going.

Sarah: I don’t even like pancakes and I want pancakes. And blueberries, which I do have. Will bring!

Amanda: I also love the little hearts on the top of her crew socks peeking out from her boots.

“Till There Was You” and “One Last Stop” make two books where pancakes are a prominent feature. Are there other romances with pancakes? Because clearly my goal in life is to be hungry for breakfast food when I read.
