  • Partners in Crime

Partners in Crime by Alisha Rai

RECOMMENDED: Partners in Crime by Alisha Rai is $1.99! Lara read this one and gave it an A- in a Lightning Review:

Because of my absolute abhorrence of a Big Misunderstanding plot, I nearly didn’t come back to this book, so if that turns you off, too, don’t make my mistake. You’ll be rewarded with a fun, emotionally nuanced, and surprising heist adventure – a very memorable one!

Indian Matchmaking meets Date Night in this fun, romantic adventure by Alisha Rai — “One of the very brightest romance writers working right now.” (Entertainment Weekly)

Mira Patel’s got a solid accounting career, good friends, and a whole lot of distance between her and her dysfunctional family. All that’s missing is a stable romantic relationship. Armed with a spreadsheet and professional help, she sets out to find her partner in only legal activities, but much to her matchmaker’s dismay, no one is quite right.

Including Naveen Desai, the very first match she unceremoniously rejected.

Lately Naveen’s been too focused on keeping his sick grandfather’s law firm afloat to think about love, and he’s stunned when Mira walks back into his life to settle her aunt’s affairs. He’s determined to keep things professional…though it’s impossible not to be intrigued by all of the secrets piling up around Mira.

If getting back together with an ex is a bad idea, getting kidnapped with one is even worse.

Suddenly, Naveen and Mira find themselves in a mad dash through Las Vegas to escape jewel thieves, evade crime bosses, and follow the clues to untangle the mess her family left behind. As her past comes back to haunt her, Mira despairs of ever finding someone who might understand her…but maybe, over the course of one wild night, she’ll find that he’s right by her side.

  • Good Fortune

    Good Fortune by C.K. Chau

Good Fortune by C.K. Chau is $1.99! I mentioned this on a previous Get Rec’d! It’s a Pride & Prejudice reimagining set in New York City’s Chinatown. I love the brightness of the cover!

A whip-smart and charming debut novel that brilliantly reimagines Pride and Prejudice, set in contemporary Chinatown, exploring contemporary issues of class divides, family ties, cultural identity, and the pleasures and frustrations that come with falling in love.

When Elizabeth Chen’s ever-hustling realtor mother finally sells the beloved if derelict community center down the block, the new owners don’t look like typical New York City buyers. Brendan Lee and Darcy Wong are good Chinese boys with Hong Kong money. Clean-cut and charismatic, they say they are committed to cleaning up the neighborhood. To Elizabeth, that only means one thing: Darcy is looking to give the center an uptown makeover.

Elizabeth is determined to fight for community over profit, even if it means confronting the arrogant, uptight man every chance she gets. But where clever, cynical Elizabeth sees lemons, her mother sees lemonade. Eager to get Elizabeth and her other four daughters ahead in the world (and out of their crammed family apartment), Mrs. Chen takes every opportunity to keep her investors close. Closer than Elizabeth likes.

The more time they spend together, the more conflicted Elizabeth feels…until a shocking betrayal forces her to reconsider everything she thought she knew about love, trust, and the kind of person Darcy Wong really is.

  • For the Duke’s Eyes Only

For the Duke’s Eyes Only by Lenora Bell

For the Duke’s Eyes Only by Lenora Bell is $1.99! This historical romance has an archaeologist heroine and a childhood friends to enemies to lovers romance. Carrie read this one and ultimately wanted more nerdery. Have you read this one?

If adventure has a name…it must be Lady India Rochester. The intrepid archaeologist possesses a sharp blade and an even sharper knack for uncovering history’s forgotten women. Unfortunately, she has one annoying weakness: the dangerously handsome Duke of Ravenwood. Former best friend. Current enemy. And the man who dared to break her heart.

Daniel Bonds, the Duke of Ravenwood, is a thrill-seeking antiquities hunter who only plays by one rule: Never fall in love. He’s in it for the fortune and glory. At least that’s what he wants the world to think. He’s sworn to hide his tangled web of secrets, especially from the one woman he cares about and will protect at any cost.

But when a priceless relic is stolen from the British Museum, the rivals must align forces. Racing to recover the stolen antiquity and avert an international disaster? All in a day’s work. Avoiding their buried feelings? More and more impossible. For love is about to become the greatest treasure of all.

    The grand adventure begins…now!

  • His Fair Assassin Trilogy

His Fair Assassin Trilogy by Robin LaFevers

His Fair Assassin Trilogy by Robin LaFevers is $1.99! This contains three books and is about a secret sect of assassin nuns in fifteenth-century France. I’ve seen that the “assassin nuns” really live up to the hype.

In fifteenth-century France, the convent of Saint Mortain provides sanctuary to girls seeking refuge from the cruelty of the outside world. But sanctuary comes at a price—and each of Death’s handmaidens pays it in blood.

Grave Mercy is where the story begins, when seventeen-year-old Ismae escapes the brutality of an arranged marriage by joining the convent. An assignment brings her to the high court of Brittany, where she must navigate treason and temptation—especially when the master she serves demands the life of the man she loves.

In Dark Triumph, after training as an elite killer to escape her past, Sybella must return to the home she thought she’d never see again. Her quest for justice against her violent family will bring nothing but destruction—until she meets a prisoner who gives her a reason to live.

Annith yearns to serve Saint Mortain, but has spent her life watching her far more gifted sisters dole out Death’s vengeance from the safety of the convent. In Mortal Heart, her destiny is finally revealed, and it is the one she feared most: a life as a seeress, not an assassin. But Annith refuses to give up on her dream and decides that nothing will stand in the way of her ambitions . . . not even the convent itself.

Together, these three novels make up the New York Times best-selling His Fair Assassin trilogy, where romance, magic, and political intrigue collide. Fans of Marie Lu’s The Young Elites and Kiersten White’s And I Darken will love this seductive dark fantasy collection.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

I always enjoy Alisha Rai (funny dialogue and excellent family relationships), although I felt PARTNERS IN CRIME crammed a bit too much into the ending—there are two major plot twists when one would have definitely been sufficient/two makes it feel like the characters have just been (metaphorically) dropped off a cliff. Otherwise, definitely recommend.

*smashes BUY so hard on His Fair Assassin that she breaks her keyboard*

This series is AMAZING. Seriously. The characters are complex and the situations they are in are nuanced. The history is fascinating. And the author does a simply incredible job of vividly describing every location so you feel like you’re there. How vivid? Well, I went to Auray a couple of years after reading the books and I had FLASHBACKS to the Auray sequence in the book as if I’d lived it. I cannot recommend this trilogy enough! If you only have $1.99 to spend today, that is what you should spend it on.

  4. Liz says:

Hmm I’ve enjoyed books by Lenora Bell in the past, and I love archaeology and adventure romance. But anyone know if “For the Duke’s Eyes Only” is of the pro-colonizer variety, where they don’t even question whether it’s OK to ransack priceless artifacts they have no actual claim to?

  5. flchen1 says:

  6. Rhiannon Kaye says:

@Liz unfortunately I can’t remember, good question. I did enjoy it (and I take issue regularly with that type of thing now, having read a lot of Amelia Peabody mysteries as a teenager and not thought as much about it). I will say it was the first Lenora Bell I read or listened to and proceeded to go through others in the series and most but not all more recent ones.

  7. HeatherS says:

I know I read the “His Fair Assassin” series some years ago, and I vaguely recall loving the first book but finding the second and third much slower in plot development/pacing. I also loved the original covers way more than this modernized “stylized weapon” design.

  8. Lisa D. says:

I love, love, love the Fair Assassin books. Robin LaFevere came to speak at our local Indie and spoke about her deep dive into the history of Brittany and the layering of the church over the Gods of Old and so many other details that this history major about passed out. I’ve reread them several times. They have some dark topics for YA with closed door sex. Sit on my close bookshelf.

  9. Dreamingintrees says:

I likewise love the Fair Assassin series but it is absolutely dark. CW for domestic violence, child death, abuse, and nonconsensual sex, implied rape and incest and on page attempted SA. There are a couple sequels to the core trilogy and l can’t quite remember which bad things happens in what book but tread carefully if these can be sensitive subjects for you.

  10. flchen1 says:

    Free:
    – A Prince Among Men: A Military Romance (Red Hot & Blue) by Cat Johnson

    $.99:
    – Holly Hills Christmas by A.D. Ellis
    – Window Dressing (Merry Everything Book 1) by Jodi Payne, BA Tortuga
    – Nauti or Nice: MM Friends to Lovers Christmas Romance, (Voyagers Book Five)
    by Ava Olsen
    – In Case of Emergency: Gay Christmas Romance (Love at the Holidays) by Keira Andrews

  11. Liz says:

@Rhiannon Kaye oh, this quasi-rec is so relatable! Like, “I think I recommend it, or at least I remember enjoying it, but if I reread it now I might be kinda mortified!” Lol but thank you, that does help! I’ll take a peek and hope for the best <3
