For Never & Always
For Never & Always by Helena Greer is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, as are all of today’s sales. Definitely check out the six pages of offerings. Several of us were excited for this one when it came out!
One surprise inheritance, two best friends (now bitter exes), and three months to prove he loves her, forever and always, in this swoony second-chance romance for fans of Alexandria Bellefleur and Ashley Herring Blake.
Hannah Rosenstein should be happy: after a lonely childhood of traipsing all over the world, she finally has a home as the co-owner of destination inn Carrigan’s All Year. But her thoughts keep coming back to Levi “Blue” Matthews: her first love, worst heartbreak, and now, thanks to her great-aunt’s meddling will, absentee business partner.
When Levi left Carrigan’s, he had good intentions. As the queer son of the inn’s cook and groundskeeper, he never quite fit in their small town and desperately wanted to prove himself. Now that he’s a celebrity chef, he’s ready to come home and make amends. Only his return goes nothing like he planned: his family’s angry with him, his best friend is dating his nemesis, and Hannah just wants him to leave. Again.
Levi sees his chance when a VIP bride agrees to book Carrigan’s—if he’s the chef. He’ll happily cook for the wedding, and in exchange, Hannah will give him five dates to win her back. Only Hannah doesn’t trust this new Levi, and Levi’s coming to realize Hannah’s grown too. But if they find the courage to learn from the past . . . they just might discover the love of your life is worth waiting for.

Game Misconduct
Game Misconduct by Ari Baran is $1.99! This is a m/m hockey romance with an age difference. We also mentioned it on a previous Hide Your Wallet! I know this is prime catnip for some of you!
Two bitter rivals go head-to-head in this age-gap, enemies-to-lovers hockey romance.
Michael Sato is used to fighting.
An undersized defenseman, Mike had to be tough, clawing his way up from the minors by taking down one ferocious player at a time. No way is he going to lose his spot on the league roster, especially not by giving in to his attraction to a hot, infuriating rival.
Daniel Garcia is used to fighting, too.
Enforcer Danny is the biggest, meanest player on the ice. A target for anyone trying to make a name for themselves, he doesn’t show weakness, nor is he going to risk his last seasons for a sexy rookie who nearly knocked him on his ass.
When their intense physical connection explodes outside of the rink, Mike and Danny learn they just might be able to build something real, but only if they can let down their guard—and their fists—long enough.

The Ghost Bride
The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo is $1.99! This is a mixture of historical fiction, fantasy, and romance. The Ghost Bride. It’s also been made into a Netflix adaptation that I’m super curious about!
‘One evening, my father asked me whether I would like to become a ghost bride…’
Though ruled by British overlords, the Chinese of colonial Malaya still cling to ancient customs. And in the sleepy port town of Malacca, ghosts and superstitions abound.
Li Lan, the daughter of a genteel but bankrupt family, has few prospects. But fate intervenes when she receives an unusual proposal from the wealthy and powerful Lim family. They want her to become a ghost bride for the family’s only son, who recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, traditional ghost marriages are used to placate restless spirits. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at a terrible price.
After an ominous visit to the opulent Lim mansion, Li Lan finds herself haunted not only by her ghostly would-be suitor, but also by her desire for the Lims’ handsome new heir, Tian Bai. Night after night, she is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, with its ghost cities, paper funeral offerings, vengeful spirits, and monstrous bureaucracy—including the mysterious Er Lang, a charming but unpredictable guardian spirit. Li Lan must uncover the Lim family’s darkest secrets—and the truth about her own family—before she is trapped in this ghostly world forever.

Shadow and Ice
Shadow and Ice by Gena Showalter is $2.99! This is the first book in the paranormal romance series, Gods of War. I’m curious about this new series, but Showalter’s books have been misses for me, mainly because of the heroes. Are you a Showalter fan?
Knox of Iviland, the most ruthless warrior in All War history, has spent his life fighting others to the death, winning new realms for his king. Now the stakes are higher than ever. If he prevails in the battle for Earth, his slave bands will be removed. Victory is his sole focus…until he meets her.
On an arctic getaway with her foster sister, street tough but vulnerable Vale London is shocked to stumble upon a cave filled with ancient gods waging epic combat. When she is inadvertently drawn into their war, she is forced to team up with an unlikely ally—the sexy god who makes her burn with desire.
Though Vale is his enemy, Knox is consumed with lust and a fierce need to protect her. But only one combatant can triumph, and he will have to choose: live for freedom, or die for love.

The Sharing Knife: Beguilement
The Sharing Knife: Beguilement by Lois McMaster Bujold is $1.99! This is a fantasy romance and the first in a series; I know Bujold is a bit of favorite around here. I’ve unearthed an old 2007 review on the site! Better brush the dust off!
Troubled young Fawn Bluefield seeks a life beyond her family’s farm. But en route to the city, she encounters a patrol of Lakewalkers, nomadic soldier-sorcerers from the northern woodlands. Feared necromancers armed with mysterious knives made of human bone, they wage a secret, ongoing war against the scourge of the “malices,” immortal entities that draw the life out of their victims, enslaving human and animal alike.
It is Dag–a Lakewalker patroller weighed down by past sorrows and onerous present responsibilities–who must come to Fawn’s aid when she is taken captive by a malice. They prevail at a devastating cost–unexpectedly binding their fates as they embark upon a remarkable journey into danger and delight, prejudice and partnership . . . and perhaps even love.

Love the Sharing Knife books by LMB. They are total comfort reads for me, as LMB is unfailingly a voice of calm human reason and kindness in whatever adventure her characters are embroiled; the audiobooks are also excellent (although they are not read by LMB’s usual narrator supreme, Grover Gardner). There is also a new Pen and Des book out as of Jan 9, for anyone who did not notice.
@Susan Thank you for the notice about the new Pen and Des book – I did not know.
I love LMB, but the Sharing Knife was a DNF for me. I can’t remember why, as I tried this a long time ago, but it surprised me at the time because I absolutely love her books. I should probably give it another try.
GAME MISCONDUCT is really good. It’s like a grittier, rougher version of HEATED RIVALRY.
For those interested in Work it Out, the author has an IG where she is posting bare minimum exercises for January (and beyond? who knows): https://www.instagram.com/work_it_out_sk/
$.99:
– Lavender’s Blue (The Liz Danger Series Book 1) by Jennifer Crusie, Bob Mayer
After checking the samples, THE GHOST BRIDE and WORK IT OUT seem very promising! I’m less sure about THE SHARING KNIFE: BEGUILEMENT but curious enough to throw it in the cart too.
The Sharing Knife series is incredible. Truly some of Bujold’s best work. For those of unsure about reading it, it was Bujold’s feminist response to the Lord of the Rings. There are some great posts about it and frankly I had missed like 85% of them. It’s a subtle but rich masterpiece.
I’m confused and looking for a bit of education. The blurb about FOR NEVER AND ALWAYS says that Levi is queer, but it appears that he is (or wants to be) romantically involved with Hannah. When I learned the term queer, it meant gay. Does it now have a broader meaning?
@Susan/DC: Queer is now used as broader term that encompasses LGBTIA+ identities. For example, both my partner and I are queer people. I am bisexual woman and they are a bisexual, non-binary person.
I’m reading Work it Out now. I appreciate the author’s easy going attitude, along with the sections being short, so I can just read a little bit as I can handle it.
@LJBG “Feminist response to the Lord of the Rings” certainly piques my interest!
@Susan/DC Wikipedia’s 3-paragraph intro to their “Queer” page covers the history of the word pretty nicely. I count under the more recent broad definition because I’m nonbinary, but I don’t normally claim the term because I remember the older definition and feel like I’ve squeaked in on a technicality . (I think the broadening is generally good, tho, and I don’t object to others referring to me as queer.)
I love the third and fourth books of the Sharing Knife series, Passage (building a found family on a riverboat journey) and Horizon (the trip back upriver, adding to the family and dealing with a Big Evil). I don’t re-read the first two books as often, but the last two are regular comfort reads for me (as LMB’s books tend to be).
The word queer is so internalized (in my thinking) as an insult that it is challenging for me to remember that for many people, this word is an acceptable and preferred descriptor instead of cringing on behalf of the person being called queer.
Thanks so much to those who answered my question about the word queer. Like LML I remember when it was considered an insult, but I think it’s one of those terms that has now been captured and owned, rather like Stormy Daniels saying “you call me bitch as if that’s a bad thing”. A bit embarrassed to admit I didn’t think to turn to Wikipedia for information.
@Susan/DC I think it’s so great we have a community here where you can ask a question and get lots of good answers and perspectives! I enjoy reading these conversations and am glad you turned to the community instead of just Wikipedia. I’m a bi cis woman and older (and in a relationship with a cis straight man) and it took years to get comfortable with referring to myself as anything but now also embrace queer as a broader descriptor.
