  • The Duchess Deal

The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare

RECOMMENDEDThe Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is the first book in the Girl Meets Duke series. Elyse really loved this book and gave it an A grade:

I totally recommend reading The Duchess Deal, but preferably while sober so you can really appreciate all of it. It’s the perfect blend of two of my favorite fairytale tropes, it’s got a hero who never an alpha-hole, it’s funny, and it’s got female friendship. What more could you want?

When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules…

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury’s to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne’er-do-wells by night. Now there’s a new item on the list. He needs an heir—which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she’ll do.

    His terms are simple:
    – They will be husband and wife by night only.
    – No lights, no kissing.
    – No questions about his battle scars.
    – Last, and most importantly… Once she’s pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:
    – They will have dinner together every evening.
    – With conversation.
    – And unlimited teasing.
    – Last, and most importantly… Once she’s seen the man beneath the scars, he can’t stop her from falling in love…

  • Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake

Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean

Nine Rules to Break When Romancing a Rake by Sarah MacLean is $1.99! This is book one in the Love by the Numbers series. I’m not sure if it was MacLean’s debut, but it is a release from early in her writing career!

A lady does not smoke cheroot. She does not ride astride. She does not fence or attend duels. She does not fire a pistol, and she never gambles at a gentlemen’s club.

Lady Calpurnia Hartwell has always followed the rules, rules that have left her unmarried—and more than a little unsatisfied. And so she’s vowed to break the rules and live the life of pleasure she’s been missing.

But to dance every dance, to steal a midnight kiss—to do those things, Callie will need a willing partner. Someone who knows everything about rule-breaking. Someone like Gabriel St. John, the Marquess of Ralston—charming and devastatingly handsome, his wicked reputation matched only by his sinful smile.

If she’s not careful, she’ll break the most important rule of all—the one that says that pleasure-seekers should never fall hopelessly, desperately in love.

  • How to Catch a Queen

How to Catch a Queen by Alyssa Cole

How to Catch a Queen by Alyssa Cole is $1.99! This is the first book in Cole’s Runaway Royals spin-off series. It recently has a new cover design for a trade paperback release. I don’t mind illustrated covers as much as the community does (daresay I even like them!), but this one feels soulless.

An arranged marriage leads to unexpected desire, in the first book of Alyssa Cole’s Runaway Royals series…

When Shanti Mohapi weds the king of Njaza, her dream of becoming a queen finally comes true. But it’s nothing like she imagined. Shanti and her husband may share an immediate and powerful attraction, but her subjects see her as an outsider, and everything she was taught about being the perfect wife goes disastrously wrong.

A king must rule with an iron fist, and newly crowned King Sanyu was born perfectly fitted for the gauntlet, even if he wishes he weren’t. He agrees to take a wife as is required of him, though he doesn’t expect to actually fall in love. Even more vexing? His beguiling new queen seems to have the answers to his country’s problems—except no one will listen to her.

By day, they lead separate lives. By night, she wears the crown, and he bows to her demands in matters of politics and passion. When turmoil erupts in their kingdom and their marriage, Shanti goes on the run, and Sanyu must learn whether he has what it takes both to lead his people and to catch his queen.

  • Rise

    Rise by Karina Bliss

Rise by Karina Bliss is 99c! This is the first book in the Rock Solid series and I feel like I’ve seen this recommended in the comments before. I’m not much of a fan of rockstar romances, but the setup of this one has me reconsidering. Have you read this one?

Acclaimed literary biographer Elizabeth Winston writes about long-dead heroes. So bad-boy rock icon Zander Freedman couldn’t possibly tempt her to write his memoir. Except the man is a mass of fascinating contradictions–manipulative, honest, gifted, charismatic and morally ambiguous.

In short, everything she seeks in a biography subject. When in her life will she get another chance to work with a living legend? But saying yes to one temptation soon leads to another. Suddenly she’s having heated fantasies about her subject, fantasies this blue-eyed devil is only too willing to stoke. She thought self-control was in her DNA; after all, she grew up a minister’s daughter.

    She thought wrong.

Rock star Zander Freedman has been an outlier–many would say an outcast–for most of his life. But there’s no disaster he can’t overcome, from the breakup of his band to the inevitable damage to his reputation. His Resurrection Tour is shaping up to be his greatest triumph–if his golden voice holds out. Contracting a respected biographer is simply about creating more buzz. Elizabeth’s integrity is the key to consolidating his legacy as one of rock’s greats. All the damn woman has to do is write down what he tells her. Not force him to think. Or encourage the good guy struggling to get out. And certainly not make him fall in love for the first time in his life. Turns out he is scared of something: being known.

Link to Rise is broken! I did pick up Nine Rules

  2. Nerdalisque says:

Cover photo and description are not the Karina Bliss book 🙂

  3. Amanda says:

Should be good now! Sometimes that’s the downside of having 10K+ books in the repo.

  4. Deborah says:

Well. I went to Amazon to pick up RISE for that very good price (I prefer the third book in the series, PLAY, but Rise contains some crucial scenes for that couple’s relationship) and discovered that I’ve owned the book since 2020. I’m pretty sure I’ve checked it out of the library since then as a companion-read to Play! I love the convenience of digital books, but I desperately need a better way to track the titles I own.

  5. Teresa says:

Rise is a personal favorite. It’s fantastic.

  6. Holly Bush says:

The Duchess Deal is one of my all-time favorites!

  7. Kris says:

Rise is my favourite of that series. Even though Zander can be rotten, he’s a better person with Elizabeth in his life.

  9. Susan/DC says:

@flchen1: Thank you for including THE LEFT-HANDED BOOKSELLERS OF LONDON, which reminded me to see if there’s a sequel. Turns out there is, THE SINISTER BOOKSELLERS OF BATH. I immediately checked it out of the library. I do like Garth Nix’s books. I count as one of the advantages of having had children that there are authors I discovered through them, including Nix (and Susan Cooper, and Rosemary Sutcliff, and Neil Gaiman, and so many others). My sons were born pre-internet, so while I might have discovered these writers on my own today, I found them 20 years earlier when they showed up among their library books or on their birthday wish lists
