Hide Your Wallet: October 17th Release Week!

We’re about halfway through the month and I am always amazed at the sheer volume of books that routinely come out each week!

We have some historical romance, a historical mystery, and a new book by Alexis Hall. It’s a shorter list than I had thought, this week.

Which books are on your TBR pile? Any overlap with our picks? Let us know in the comments!

  • 10 Things That Never Happened

10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall

    Author: Alexis Hall
Released: October 17, 2023 by Sourcebooks Casablanca
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Material World #1

Fake amnesia. Real feelings? Real problems.

Sam Becker loves―or, okay, likes―his job. Sure, managing a bed and bath retailer isn’t exactly glamorous, but it’s good work and he gets on well with the band of misfits who keep the store running. He could see himself being content here for the long haul. Too bad, then, that the owner is an infuriating git.

Jonathan Forest should never have hired Sam. It was a sentimental decision, and Jonathan didn’t get where he is by following his heart. Determined to set things right, Jonathan orders Sam down to London for a difficult talk…only for a panicking Sam to trip, bump his head, and maybe accidentally imply he doesn’t remember anything?

Faking amnesia seemed like a good idea when Sam was afraid he was getting sacked, but now he has to deal with the reality of Jonathan’s guilt―as well as the unsettling fact that his surly boss might have a softer side to him. There’s an unexpected freedom in getting a second shot at a first impression…but as Sam and Jonathan grow closer, can Sam really bring himself to tell the truth, or will their future be built entirely on one impulsive lie?

I believe this is book one in a spin-off series from Boyfriend Material.

  • The Marquis Who Mustn’t

The Marquis Who Mustn’t by Courtney Milan

    Author: Courtney Milan
Released: October 17, 2023 by Femtopress LLC
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Wedgeford Trials #2

    One good fraud deserves another…

Miss Naomi Kwan has long wanted to take ambulance classes so that she can save lives. But when she tries to register, she’s told she needs permission from the man in charge of her. It would be incredibly wrong to claim that the tall, taciturn Chinese nobleman she just met is her fiancé, but Naomi is desperate, and desperate times call for fake engagements.

To her unending surprise, Liu Ji Kai goes along with her ruse. It’s not that Kai is nice. He’s in Wedgeford to practice his family business, and there’s no room for “nice” when you’re out to steal a fortune. It’s not that the engagement is convenient; a fake fiancée winding herself into his life and his heart is suboptimal when he plans to commit fraud and flee the country. His reason is Kai and Naomi were betrothed as children. He may have disappeared for seventeen years, but their engagement isn’t actually fake. It’s the only truth he’s telling.

Aarya: So excited to revisit the village of Wedgeford!

Shana: Oooh, new Courtney Milan! And what looks like a hero with long hair, my fave.

  • Murder by Degrees

Murder by Degrees by Ritu Mukerji

    Author: Ritu Mukerji
Released: October 17, 2023 by Simon & Schuster
    Genre: ,

For fans of Jacqueline Winspear and Charles Todd, Murder by Degrees is a historical mystery set in 19th century Philadelphia, following a pioneering woman doctor as she investigates the disappearance of a young patient who is presumed dead.

Philadelphia, 1875: It is the start of term at Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania. Dr. Lydia Weston, professor and anatomist, is immersed in teaching her students in the lecture hall and hospital. When the body of a patient, Anna Ward, is dredged out of the Schuylkill River, the young chambermaid’s death is deemed a suicide. But Lydia is suspicious and she is soon brought into the police investigation.

Aided by a diary filled with cryptic passages of poetry, Lydia discovers more about the young woman she thought she knew. Through her skill at the autopsy table and her clinical acumen, Lydia draws nearer the truth. Soon a terrible secret, long hidden, will be revealed. But Lydia must act quickly, before she becomes the next target of those who wished to silence Anna.

Sarah: I’m a little trepidatious about this one because there might be some hella violence, but I’m so curious: a woman doctor and anatomist in 1875 Philadelphia is investigating a suspicious death of a chambermaid. It looks atmospheric and detailed and very alluring.

  • These Burning Stars

These Burning Stars by Bethany Jacobs

    Author: Bethany Jacobs
Released: October 17, 2023 by Orbit
    Genre: ,
    Series: The Kindom Trilogy #1

A dangerous cat-and-mouse quest for revenge. An empire that spans star systems, built on the bones of a genocide. A carefully hidden secret that could collapse worlds, hunted by three women with secrets of their own. All collide in this twisty, explosive space opera debut, perfect for readers of Arkady Martine and Kameron Hurley.

Jun Ironway—hacker, con artist, and occasional thief—has gotten her hands on a piece of contraband that could set her up for proof that implicates the powerful Nightfoot family in a planet-wide genocide seventy-five years ago. The Nightfoots control the precious sevite that fuels interplanetary travel through three star systems. And someone is sure to pay handsomely for anything that could break their hold.

Of course, anything valuable is also dangerous. The Kindom, the ruling power of the star systems, is inextricably tied up in the Nightfoots’ monopoly—and they can’t afford to let Jun expose the truth. They task two of their most brutal clerics with hunting her preternaturally stoic Chono, and brilliant hothead Esek, who also happens to be the heir to the Nightfoot empire.

But Chono and Esek are haunted in turn by a figure from their shared past, known only as Six. What Six truly wants is anyone’s guess. And the closer they get to finding Jun, the surer Chono is that Six is manipulating them all.

It’s a game that could destroy their lives and devastate the stars. And they have no choice but to see it through to the end.

Amanda: Am I getting a whiff of romance?

  1. LisaM says:

Audrey Faye is releasing a new book in her Ghost Mountain shifter series on Thursday, and that’s helping me through this week. It’s called Poet, with Terrence as a central character. The blurb mentions a long-awaited mating ceremony, which should bring some joyful chaos and interesting guests.

  2. Star says:

Ooh, could we do a rec league for long-haired heroes? (Or is there one? I searched and didn’t see one, but I often fail at things.)

  3. I absolutely loved Ten Things that Never Happened!

  4. Neile says:

Thrilled for a new Courtney Milan, which has already landed on my kindle, and happy to see the new Alexis Hall. I’ll also be putting a library hold on Sweeten The Deal by Katie Shepard, as I liked her debut, Bear With Me Now. Oh, and the new Jaine Diamond, Irresistible Rogue, also waits on my kindle. I’m a sucker for her angsty, steamy rockstar (or rock star adjacent) romances.

  5. Lisa F says:

Milan and Hall are on my TBR.

  6. Escapeologist says:

@Star ooh long-haired heroes rec league, yes please!

There is one in Don’t Hex and Drive by Juliette Cross, he’s a vampire Bollywood star

  7. flchen1 says:

Just to say that I’m all swoony for Courtney Milan’s newest–that cover had me gasping and one-clicking when I laid eyes on it a month ago!!

  8. DiscoDollyDeb says:

TEN THINGS THAT NEVER HAPPENED was the only book on my tbr this week. Alexis Hall is hit-or-miss for me, but I’ve heard such good things about TEN THINGS, I went ahead and paid full price for it. I’m only a couple of chapters in, but I’m liking the snarky humor and the way Hall can sketch out a character in a few strokes.

  9. Kareni says:

@Star: Charles from Patricia Briggs’ Alpha and Omega series has long hair.
