  • A Proposal They Can’t Refuse

A Proposal They Can’t Refuse by Natalie Caña

A Proposal They Can’t Refuse by Natalie Caña is $1.99! This was Caña’s debut and features rivals to lovers and fake dating. The second book in the series is out next month. Lots of good food and drink descriptions!

Kamilah Vega is desperate to convince her family to update their Puerto Rican restaurant and enter it into the Fall Foodie Tour. With the gentrification of their Chicago neighborhood, it’s the only way to save the place. Liam Kane spent a decade working to turn his family’s distillery into a contender. Now he and his grandfather are on the verge of winning a national competition. Then Granda hits him with a one-two punch: he has cancer and he has his heart set on seeing Liam married before it’s too late. And Granda knows just the girl…Kamilah Vega.

With their futures on the line, Kamilah and Liam plan to outfox the devious duo, faking an engagement until they both get what they want. But soon, they find themselves tangled up in more than either of them bargained for.

  • Nevermore Bookstore

    Nevermore Bookstore by Kerrigan Byrne

Nevermore Bookstore by Kerrigan Byrne and Cynthia St. Aubin is 99c at Amazon! I’ve see a few people mention this one in the comments before, so much so that I featured it on Book Beat.

Cadence “Cady” Bloomquist knows two things for sure: First, shelving books at her shop, Nevermore Bookstore, totally counts as cardio. Second, staying late every Thursday night to take a certain mysterious customer’s order is not the same as waiting by the phone for some man.

    Until.

Until the calls with the man who identifies himself only as “Fox” last for hours, and become the highlight of her week. Which leaves her to wonder, if his jagged velvet voice can kindle her fire over the phone, what sort of alchemy might it inspire if they met in person?

There’s nothing Roman Fawkes wants more than the brilliant, beautiful bookstore owner, but Roman Fawkes knows it can never happen. Secreted in his mountain hideaway high above sleepy little Townsend Harbor, his hermit’s existence shields him–and those around him–from the pain of his past.

    Until.

Until one of their weekly calls is interrupted by a break-in, and Fawkes is powerless to protect the woman who has become his one link to the world. Orchestrating a trap for the fool who dared harm her, Fawkes finds himself not just ensnared, but beguiled by her. Now so close to Cady, he discovers she’s fallen for “Fox”, and yet he’s unable to reveal her heart’s desire is closer than she thinks.

Can Fawkes resist the temptation to get between Cady’s covers, knowing they’ll never have a happily ever after?

  • Some Desperate Glory

Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh

Some Desperate Glory by Emily Tesh is $2.99! I mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Might be worth picking up if you’re in the mood for a queer space oepra.

From Astounding Award Winner and Crawford Award Finalist Emily Tesh

“Masterful, audacious storytelling. Relentless, unsentimental, a completely wild ride.”—Tamsyn Muir

While we live, the enemy shall fear us.

Since she was born, Kyr has trained for the day she can avenge the murder of planet Earth. Raised in the bowels of Gaea Station alongside the last scraps of humanity, she readies herself to face the Wisdom, the powerful, reality-shaping weapon that gave the majoda their victory over humanity.

They are what’s left. They are what must survive. Kyr is one of the best warriors of her generation, the sword of a dead planet. When Command assigns her brother to certain death and relegates her to the nursery to bear sons until she dies trying, she knows must take humanity’s revenge into her own hands.

Alongside her brother’s brilliant but seditious friend and a lonely, captive alien, Kyr escapes from everything she’s known into a universe far more complicated than she was taught and far more wondrous than she could have imagined.

A thrillingly told queer space opera about the wreckage of war, the family you find, and who you must become when every choice is stripped from you, Some Desperate Glory is award-winning author Emily Tesh’s highly anticipated debut novel.

  1. Jill says:

I was so freaking hungry after Proposal They Can’t Refuse! It was good, but the descriptions of food was amazing, especially Kamilah making Mallorca buns…

  2. Emily B says:

I remember enjoying Proposal They Can’t Refuse while I was reading it, but can’t say I remember much about it now (It’s been over a year). Her follow up is on my TBR for when it’s released.

  3. Jen says:

I just read Scoundrel of My Heart and really enjoyed it, especially as my first Lorraine Heath. However book two, The Duchess Hunt, I absolutely loved. Definitely on the LH train!

  4. Mabry says:

Nevermore Bookstore is definitely one of my top reads this year. Wonderful sense of place, great diverse characters, and a really good love story. All this and funny, too.

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Ari Baran’s GAME MISCONDUCT is currently $1.99 in the Kindle Store. It’s an m/m hockey romance, sort of a rougher, grittier HEATED RIVALRY. I liked it very much—highly recommended.

  6. flchen1 says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, I bought Game Misconduct for full price when it was released. That’s a great deal!

  7. cleo says:

I gave Some Desperate Glory 4/5 stars on Goodreads but I’m not actually sure that I recommend reading it.

    Things to know:
It’s very, very grim. And dystopian. There’s no romance. There are queer characters but the world is very homophobic and transphobic (also misogynistic and genocidal). Take the trigger warnings seriously.

I read it as a feminist re-imagining of Ender’s Game and I think it’s pretty successful on that level.

It has all of the action and plot twists of a summer blockbuster, and also the nuanced character development of a blockbuster (which is to say, none). It’s not deep. It’s not nuanced. I was completely engrossed by it while reading it but it didn’t stay with me.

  8. flchen1 says:

It’s another stuff one’s e-reader event, this one for the next couple days: https://www.romancebookworms.com/

    Happy reading!

  9. Ely says:

Seconding @Mabry about NEVERMORE BOOKSTORE. It’s all the lovely adjectives: thoughtful, caring, empathetic … just a warm hug of a book. Do be aware that the MMC is dealing with some really rough PTSD and the FMC has a chronic illness. Neither of these are magically solved by falling in love, but the ways they find to help each other are just beautiful.

I think I wrote a comment here earlier this year that I was excited about the next in the series, BREWBIES, but it was a serious letdown after Nevermore. Don’t let the fantastic blurb and first chapter fool you, the MMC of Brewbies is a silver-spoon, stick up the ass, self-centered jackass who doesn’t deserve the FMC. I’m clearly still cranky about this book, grrrr.

  10. Darlynne says:

WE JUST COULDN’T SAY GOODBYE by Layne Deemer is free on both Amazon US and UK. I can’t remember where I heard about this time travel romance, but free is worth checking out.
