Links: Mostly Food Content

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back, friends! Let’s share some links!

Most of today’s links are related to food. Sometimes it just works out that way, though I’ve also included an amazing thread of recommendations if you’re looking for queer historical fantasy romances.

Let’s goooo!

The queer historical fantasy recommendation thread in question:

If you follow Roxane Gay on any type of social media, you’ve probably seen all of her amazing cooking content. Well here’s a cooking video she did for The New York Times along with her wife. I’m sure Gay is incredibly busy, but I’d watch a cooking show with her as the host.

Lauren Willig and Sarah Wendell for the Pink Carnation Read Along Thursday May 27 at 8pm ET

Next week! FREE EVENT! Sarah is the guest for month four of Lauren Willig’s Carnation read-along, and the Zoom gathering will be on 5/27.

For all of our Midwesterners, tell me more about your Snickers Salad:

Is there anything more Canadian than a multi-million dollar maple syrup heist?

Don’t forget to share what cool or interesting things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

I hope this will not be behind a paywall (NYT can be capricious), but did you see there’s a trove of Bronte documents going for auction? I suppose it’s too much to ask that some academically-inclined billionaire purchase the lot and then donate them to a university or the Bronte Society. Well, THAT is how it would happen in a Billionaire romance novel!

  2. Katie says:

The Netflix doc series Dirty Money has an episode on the maple syrup heist, which was the first I had ever heard of it. Also the first place I learned there was a global reserve of maple syrup and a black market for maple syrup. The whole thing was so fascinating and funny (funny on the scale of crimes anyway).

  3. Batman says:

As a fellow Midwestern mom, I can testify to the fact that anything in a Tupperware bowl can and will be called a salad.

  4. Emma says:

@Katie: I saw that episode too! Even though I barely ever have maple syrup, I find myself going “HMMMM” over the “100% maple syrup” bottles at Grocery Outlet every week. Back when it was more of a big deal, I heard similar fraud happened in the manuka honey supply chain.

For food links, the infamous hotpot fight of 2020 never fails to make me literally LOL: https://twitter.com/jnchien/status/1345228646282235906?s=20

If you look slightly further down that thread, someone slowed it down and added an Enya as a soundtrack. Amazing.

  6. Sue says:

Not food related, but have y’all watched Taskmaster? It’s a British…panel show, I guess. Most of it is watchable on youtube and it’s sooooo funny! I’ve been watching it with the kiddo (who’s not young–there are definitely swears and such if that’s an issue for you or your kids).

  7. Kate says:

@Sue, I adore Taskmaster. It saved my sanity through much of 2020.

  8. Darlynne says:

The Snickers video, ok I’m intrigued by the idea. But the smiling with all your teeth while you talk? I can’t do that. Or I’d have to practice in front of a mirror and, frankly, it seems exhausting, possibly a little weird. YMMV.

  9. Escapeologist says:

@Sue and @Kate, thank you for reminding me of Taskmaster. I discovered it in 2020 thanks to the bitchery and binged all 10 seasons that were available at that time. Happy to report season 11 has just recently wrapped up and is on YouTube for your binge watching pleasure.

  10. Sue says:

@Escapeologist I’m so sad that season 11 ended. I think it’s one of my favourites! If anyone is in the US and wanting it watch it though, a VPN of some sort is needed.
