  • Second Chance on Cypress Lane

Second Chance on Cypress Lane by Reese Ryan

Second Chance on Cypress Lane by Reese Ryan is $1.99! This sale is good through the 24th. Sarah had Reese on the podcast recently and notes that this book contains lots of food porn and jazz porn. Have you read this one?

In this heartwarming second-chance romance, a woman returns home and discovers that, when it comes to finding love, there’s no place like home.

When a romance gone wrong lands reporter Dakota Jones in the pages of the tabloids, her rising star crashes and burns. Instead of getting the weekend anchor job she’d been promised, she’s promptly shown the door. Which leaves her one option: return home to lick her wounds, eat lemon meringue pie, and plot her comeback while actively avoiding the man who once broke her heart.

Dexter Roberts made a huge mistake when he walked away from Dakota, and he’s regretted it ever since. So when Dakota returns to Holly Grove Island to regroup and decide what’s next, Dex can’t pass up the opportunity to win back the love of his life. Now he just needs to convince Dakota to give him a second chance.

  • If I Had Your Face

If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha

If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha is $1.99! This is a debut novel about a group of women trying to navigate South Korea’s strict beauty standards. It had its shortcomings, but overall, I thought it was a pretty good first novel from Cha.

A riveting debut novel set in contemporary Seoul, Korea, about four young women making their way in a world defined by impossibly high standards of beauty, secret room salons catering to wealthy men, strict social hierarchies, and K-pop fan mania.

“Even as a girl, I knew the only chance I had was to change my face… even before a fortune-teller told me so.”

Kyuri is a heartbreakingly beautiful woman with a hard-won job at a “room salon,” an exclusive bar where she entertains businessmen while they drink. Though she prides herself on her cold, clear-eyed approach to life, an impulsive mistake with a client may come to  threaten her livelihood.

Her roomate, Miho, is a talented artist who grew up in an orphanage but won a scholarship to study art in New York. Returning to Korea after college, she finds herself in a precarious relationship with the super-wealthy heir to one of Korea’s biggest companies.

Down the hall in their apartment building lives Ara, a hair stylist for whom two preoccupations sustain her: obsession with a boy-band pop star, and a best friend who is saving up for the extreme plastic surgery that is commonplace.

And Wonna, one floor below, is a newlywed trying to get pregnant with a child that she and her husband have no idea how they can afford to raise and educate in the cutthroat economy.

Together, their stories tell a gripping tale that’s seemingly unfamiliar, yet unmistakably universal in the way that their tentative friendships may have to be their saving grace.

  • The Duke’s Guide to Correct Behavior

The Duke’s Guide to Correct Behavior by Megan Frampton

The Duke’s Guide to Correct Behavior by Megan Frampton is $2.99. This is book one in the Dukes Behaving Badly series – do dukes behave otherwise? Maybe in some other genre. Readers who enjoyed it and left positive reviews mentioned the humor and the dialogue, and the nobleman/governess trope as among their favorites. However, others warn that the characters seemed more fitting of a modern setting.

All of London knows the Duke of Rutherford has position and wealth. They also whisper that he’s dissolute, devilish, and determinedly unwed. So why, everyone is asking, has he hired a governess?

When Miss Lily Russell crosses the threshold of the Duke of Rutherford’s stylish townhouse, she knows she has come face to face with sensual danger. For this is no doting papa. Rather, his behavior is scandalous, and his reputation rightly earned. And his pursuit of her is nearly irresistible—but resist she must for the sake of her pupil.

As for the duke himself, it was bad enough when his unknown child landed on his doorstep. Now Lily, with her unassuming beauty, has aroused his most wicked fantasies—and, shockingly, his desire to change his wanton ways. He’s determined to become worthy of her, and so he asks for her help in correcting his behavior.

But Lily has a secret, one that, if it becomes known, could change everything . . .

  • Graceling

    Graceling by Kristin Cashore

RECOMMENDED: Graceling by Kristin Cashore is $1.99! I’m practically salivating over the new cover designs. This is a YA fantasy novel with romantic elements and I LOVED it. The entire series is pretty great, to be honest, and the first three books are available at this price. The heroine is strong and all sorts of badass, but she’s also trying to cope with being a hired killer for the king.

Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight – she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug.

When she first meets Prince Po, Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change.

She never expects to become Po’s friend.

She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace – or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away.

  1. Lolagranola says:

All three of the Graceling (+Fire, Bitterblue) are also on sale for $1.99! I’ve been waiting for them to drop – amazing books.

  2. Ren Benton says:

GROWN by Tiffany D. Jackson is $3.99. Content warnings galore (“Borrowing heavily from the case of singer R. Kelly, who has long faced accusations of rape and abuse, Jackson urges readers to question why our culture is so quick to excuse powerful men and so eager to depict Black women and girls as complicit in their own abuse”), but Jackson is an excellent storyteller if you can stomach the subject.

  3. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Tracey Garvis Graves’s ON THE ISLAND is a $1.99 KDD today. This was a recommendation on the “fighting against the elements” Rec League and looks interesting, although the fact that the hero is underaged at the beginning of the book does give me pause. A 30-year-old teacher and the 16-year-old student she’s been tutoring (he missed a lot of school because of cancer treatments) are stranded on a remote island after a plane crash and they have to do whatever they can to survive. I’m assuming “nothing happens” until the hero turns 18–perhaps someone who has read it will enlighten us.

  4. FashionablyEvil says:

I loved GRACELING—definitely recommend the whole series. (I will say, there’s a decent amount of violence and trauma in them, especially in BITTERBLUE.)

  5. Penny says:

Oh yay! I’ve been meaning to read the GRACELING series.

A FASHIONABLE INDULGENCE by KJ Charles is 0.99 right now…. I’m working my way through Charles’ backlist, and haven’t read this series yet – this is the 1st one in The Society of Gentlemen and I’m glad to see it on sale!

  6. Jazzlet says:

Dang, yet another case where Amazon UK doesn’t have a deal – the Kristin Cashore later books. Though it does have Graceling at 99p if anyone wants to pick it up.

  7. Laurel says:

@DiscoDollyDeb nothing happens in On the Island until the guy is an adult. I am normally skeeved out by plot lines like this, but I thought it was handled well, and I did enjoy the book.

  8. Mellen says:

I’m currently re-reading the Graceling series, as #4 comes out tomorrow. This is one of my all-time favorite book series, I really can’t recommend it enough, especially on sale!

  9. Carrie G says:

@DDD, I reviewed the audio version of ON THE ISLAND for a different site years ago. I think the situation is handled very well and believably. The situation they faced isn’t trivialized– the reader sees the long term effects of a limited diet on the body, for example.

Garvis-Graves writes TJ’s coming of age well, and the introduction of the romance is handled deftly and without drama. The age difference is still going to bother some people, but surprisingly, in this case, it worked for me.

  10. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Laurel: thanks for the confirmation. I had had ON THE ISLAND on my wish list ever since it was recommended in the “Survival Against the Elements” Rec League, but when I saw that the young man is 16-years-old at the start of the book, I was a little skeeved out. I’m off to purchase it now.

  11. trefoil says:

@Ren Benton – I loved Grown and read it all in one gulp. It’s also a damning take on authorities who listen to privilege and money.

  12. Egged says:

Great british bake off: celebrations cookbook is on sale for $1.99 right now, at least on Kobo

  13. Lisa F says:

If I Had Your Face is my pick from this group; an excellent story.

  14. Lisa L says:

OMG sweeeet! I had missed that another Graceling book was coming out. And my library has the digital copy already *faints. Hold placed. I read Graceling when it first came out and was thrilled with it.
