  • A Most Unlikely Duke

A Most Unlikely Duke by Sophie Barnes

A Most Unlikely Duke by Sophie Barnes is $3.99! This is the first book in the Diamonds in the Rough historical romance series and the next book is also $3.99. Carrie read this one and gave it a B:

I loved this book for its lovely use of language, its focus on the problems of both the lower and upper classes, the incredibly likeable characters, and the affirming, sexy, sweet romance.

He never thought he’d become a duke, or that the secrets of his past would cost him his greatest love…

Raphe Matthews hasn’t stepped foot in polite circles since a tragedy left his once-noble family impoverished and in debt. The bare-knuckle boxer has spent the last fifteen years eking out an existence for himself and his two sisters. But when a stunning reversal of fortune lands Raphe the title of Duke of Huntley, he’s determined to make a go of becoming a proper lord, but he’ll need a little help, and his captivating neighbor might be just the woman for the job…

After her sister’s scandalous match, Lady Gabriella knows the ton’s eyes are on her. Agreeing to tutor the brutish new duke can only lead to ruin. Although she tries to control her irresistible attraction to Raphe, every day she spends with him only deepens her realization that this may be the one man she cannot do without. And as scandal threatens to envelop them both, she must decide if she can risk everything for love with a most unlikely duke.

  • Cold Magic

    Cold Magic by Kate Elliot

Cold Magic by Kate Elliot is 99c! This is a fantasy/steampunk novel with romantic elements. I’ve seen people recommend this one for fans of the Parasol Protectorate series. However, the book is on the longer side and some readers felt it really slogged at times.

The Wild Hunt is stirring – and the dragons are finally waking from their long sleep…

Cat Barahal was the only survivor of the flood that took her parents. Raised by her extended family, she and her cousin, Bee, are unaware of the dangers that threaten them both. Though they are in beginning of the Industrial Age, magic – and the power of the Cold Mages – still hold sway.

Now, betrayed by her family and forced to marry a powerful Cold Mage, Cat will be drawn into a labyrinth of politics. There she will learn the full ruthlessness of the rule of the Cold Mages. What do the Cold Mages want from her? And who will help Cat in her struggle against them?

  • Snowspelled

    Snowspelled by Stephanie Burgis

Snowspelled by Stephanie Burgis is $2.99! This is a fantasy romance novella and the first in a series. I also love this cover so much. Readers seemed to really like this one and their chief complaint seems to be that it was too short, but it’s lovely, atmospheric, and a great option for winter reading.

In nineteenth-century Angland, magic is reserved for gentlemen while ladies attend to the more practical business of politics. But Cassandra Harwood has never followed the rules…

Four months ago, Cassandra Harwood was the first woman magician in Angland, and she was betrothed to the brilliant, intense love of her life.

Now Cassandra is trapped in a snowbound house party deep in the elven dales, surrounded by bickering gentleman magicians, manipulative lady politicians, her own interfering family members, and, worst of all, her infuriatingly stubborn ex-fiancé, who refuses to understand that she’s given him up for his own good.

But the greatest danger of all lies outside the manor in the falling snow, where a powerful and malevolent elf-lord lurks…and Cassandra lost all of her own magic four months ago.

To save herself, Cassandra will have to discover exactly what inner powers she still possesses – and risk everything to win a new kind of happiness.

A witty and sparkling romantic fantasy novella that opens a brand-new series from the author of Kat, Incorrigible, Masks and Shadows and Congress of Secrets.

  • The Twelfth Night Bride

The Twelfth Night Bride by Kelly McClymer

The Twelfth Night Bride by Kelly McClymer is 99c! This is the seventh book in the Once Upon a Wedding series and the first book is currently free! Some readers were expecting more of a lighthearted read, but warn there’s a lot more angst than what’s in the description. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

Christmas is a time for miracles, or so Kate Fenster, the youngest of the Fenster siblings, hopes when she heads to Ireland to confront her absentee bridegroom.

The Earl of Blarney had called in her childhood promise to marry him. It had been a lighthearted bargain, she would marry him if he let her ride his prized stallion Diablo. Charmed but not quite trusting the silver-tongued Irish lord, Kate sets him to prove he is more interested in her heart than her dowry.

The courtship takes a dark turn when, just hours after their wedding, her bridegroom is called home to Ireland and refuses to return to her in England or allow her to come to him in Ireland. Kate, tired of waiting, must travel to another country to face her husband — and the fact that everything he had told her was only half-true. Now it is her turn to prove herself to him. To prove that she is the right wife for him. The one who will stand by his side while he rebuilds his lands, regains the trust of his people, and keeps his mad, fey sister safe.

Instacrush by Kate Meader is .99

  2. Penny says:

Really enjoyed the Harwood Books series by Burgis – definitely pick up Snowspelled if you want something fairly light and holiday adjacent (there’s snow? Idk feels winter season appropriate). It reminded me of Wrede & Stevermer’s Sorcery & Cecelia, but with alternate world gender roles (though just as rigidly enforced-which is kind of the whole plot). Sweet romance, fun fantasy.

    (No sex tho)

  3. Lisa F says:

Hmm, Twelfth Night Bride is pretty good.

  4. Darlynne says:

    SNOWSPELLED was exactly that, lovely.

  5. Star says:

There were lots of things I liked about the Elliott trilogy (including: INTELLIGENT CIVILISED TALKING DINOSAUR DESCENDANTS) but the pacing is definitely a bit off. It’s also narrated in the first person, but the scope of the story is much broader, which felt like a strange choice and meant that a lot of narrative payoffs didn’t quite happen. I think it would have been better as a longer series with more POV characters.

  6. MaryK says:

Mary Stewart’s Touch Not the Cat is .99 at Amazon.

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

I loved Snowspelled! Even though there’s no sex, Cassandra and Wrexham have great chemistry. I’m a sucker for smart characters who need a little help getting out of their own way. Burgis is also very skilled at writing the scenes with the Fey.

  8. Snow says:

I absolutely loved Cold Magic and the entire trilogy. It’s long, filled with action, humor, and love, and helped me through the beginning of this pandemic. The relationship between Cat and her cousin is amazing.

  9. BellaInAus says:

I really like the cover of the Barnes. It looks like she’s helping him stand correctly and he’s concentrating on how it feels. It’s expressing more of the story than just two people gazing into one another’s eyes.
