  • The Beautiful

    The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh

RECOMMENDED: The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh is $2.99 at select vendors! Kiki gave this one a B+:

Many readers WILL be enthralled with the emotion of Bastien and Celine and for them the final sections of the book will be as thrilling as they were surely meant to be. Think that might be you? Go out and get yourself some Victorian era New Orleans vampires.

New York Times bestselling author Renée Ahdieh returns with a sumptuous, sultry and romantic new series set in 19th century New Orleans where vampires hide in plain sight.

In 1872, New Orleans is a city ruled by the dead. But to seventeen-year-old Celine Rousseau, New Orleans provides her a refuge after she’s forced to flee her life as a dressmaker in Paris. Taken in by the sisters of the Ursuline convent along with six other girls, Celine quickly becomes enamored with the vibrant city from the music to the food to the soirées and—especially—to the danger. She soon becomes embroiled in the city’s glitzy underworld, known as Le Cour des Lions, after catching the eye of the group’s leader, the enigmatic Sèbastien Saint Germain. When the body of one of the girls from the convent is found in the lair of Le Cour des Lions, Celine battles her attraction to him and suspicions about Sèbastien’s guilt along with the shame of her own horrible secret.

When more bodies are discovered, each crime more gruesome than the last, Celine and New Orleans become gripped by the terror of a serial killer on the loose—one Celine is sure has set her in his sights . . . and who may even be the young man who has stolen her heart. As the murders continue to go unsolved, Celine takes matters into her own hands and soon uncovers something even more shocking: an age-old feud from the darkest creatures of the underworld reveals a truth about Celine she always suspected simmered just beneath the surface.

At once a sultry romance and a thrilling murder mystery, master storyteller Renée Ahdieh embarks on her most potent fantasy series yet: The Beautiful.

  • The Takeover Effect

The Takeover Effect by Nisha Sharma

The Takeover Effect by Nisha Sharma is $2.99 at Amazon and Kobo! This is the first book in the Singh Family Trilogy. Both Aarya and I reviewed this one. I gave it a B-. Aarya gave it a C-. Have you read this one?

Hemdeep Singh knows exactly what he wants. With his intelligence and determination, he has what it takes to build his own legacy away from Bharat, Inc. and the empire his father created. But when his brother calls him home, Hem puts his dreams on hold once again to help save the company he walked away from. That’s when he encounters the devastating Mina Kohli in the Bharat boardroom, and he realizes he’s in for more than he had bargained.

Mina will do whatever it takes to recover control of her mother’s law firm, even if it means agreeing to an arranged marriage. Her newest case assignment is to assist Bharat in the midst of a potential takeover. It could be the key to finally achieving her goal while preventing her marriage to a man she doesn’t love—as long as her explosive attraction to Hem doesn’t get in the way.

As Mina and Hem work to save Bharat, they not only uncover secrets that could threaten the existence of the company, but they also learn that in a winner-takes-all game, love always comes out on top.

  • The Devil’s Submission

The Devil’s Submission by Nicola Davidson

RECOMMENDED: The Devil’s Submission by Nicola Davidson is 99c! This is an erotic historical romance, though it is more of a novella length. Elyse really loved this book and gave it an A:

The reason I loved The Devil’s Submission so much was that it depicts two adults finding comfort and joy together in a shared kink. It’s about a healthy exploration of sexuality and acceptance of the results of that exploration. Sex positivity for the win!

Disinherited by his parents and estranged from his wife, Fallen pleasure club co-owner Lord Grayson ‘Devil’ Deveraux long ago learned to place his trust in ledgers rather than people. But his ice-cold reserve hides the scandalous truth: he’s a man who craves pain with his pleasure, and a loving lady to instruct him.

Banished to the country when her whirlwind marriage collapsed, Lady Eliza Deveraux never knew why Grayson fell out of love with her: she’d tried so damned hard to quell her fiery self and be a proper, obedient wife. But when Eliza is forced to return to London and back into Grayson’s intoxicating world, banked passions reignite. Can a marriage built on secrets and pretense truly get a second chance?

  • Ninefox Gambit

Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee

Ninefox Gambit by Yoon Ha Lee is 99c! This is an award-winning and award-nominated sci-fi novel. I’ve heard really good things and thought we had previously featured it, but perhaps I’m wrong. However, some readers mentioned they really had no idea what was going on.

When Captain Kel Cheris of the hexarchate is disgraced for her unconventional tactics, Kel Command gives her a chance to redeem herself by retaking the Fortress of Scattered Needles from the heretics. Cheris’s career isn’t the only thing at stake: if the fortress falls, the hexarchate itself might be next.

Cheris’s best hope is to ally with the undead tactician Shuos Jedao. The good news is that Jedao has never lost a battle, and he may be the only one who can figure out how to successfully besiege the fortress. The bad news is that Jedao went mad in his first life and massacred two armies, one of them his own.

As the siege wears on, Cheris must decide how far she can trust Jedao – because she might be his next victim.

  1. Georgina says:

I want to be all rah-rah about The Devil’s Submission, because femdom is rare and historical femdom even more so, but I found myself repeatedly jarred out of the story by how modern everybody felt/acted. So it wasn’t for me but it may well be for others (and for Elyse, clearly!).

The author appears to have a second historical femdom novella, At His Lady’s Command, which is also 99 cents. Haven’t read that one, but I just bought it, so fingers crossed.

  2. Beige says:

Ninefox Gambit takes a little effort before everything clicks and you get your bearings, but it is absolutely worth it.

  3. FashionablyEvil says:

@Georgina—yeah, I’m not one for usually for noticing historical inaccuracies (I’m generally with SB Sarah on the “don’t really care if the duke shows up at Almack’s in a Porsche” view of historicals), but this one was a lot for 1814. I just pretended it wasn’t 1814 and enjoyed it all the same.

  4. Allison says:

Nine-Fox Gambit is a remarkable novel, but could be confusing if you haven’t read any of the short stories that precede the novel. Many of them are available on-line. Check out “The Battle of Candle Arc” or “Calendrical Rot” as easier entry points.

  5. Lisa F says:

I really liked The Legal Affair, the second volume of the Singh Family series, but that’s because Ajay was my favorite among the brothers. Have to agree with Aarya’s assessment of the first book in the series, and I’m looking out for the final story in the trilogy, which is supposed to drop next year.

Beautiful is GORGEOUS. And I also enjoyed The Devil’s Submission, though I’m not super into d/s.
