  • King’s Captive

    King’s Captive by Amber Bardan

RECOMMENDED: King’s Captive by Amber Bardan is $2.49! If you’re looking for a mindfuck of a romance novel, this comes highly recommended by Elyse. She gave this romance an A:

If you like darker romance or like me love a good psychological thriller, King’s Captive is so much your catnip. If you prefer your hero to be squeaky clean, then maybe steer clear.

For three years, I’ve belonged to Julius King.

Some people would think being stuck on a private island is heaven, but this is my hell.

Because I’m not here as a guest. Not even close. I’m a prisoner. I’m his.

    Julius King. Powerful. Wealthy. Dangerous.

There are parts of me he wants that I can’t give him. When he looks at me, there are times I swear he sees someone else. And the scary part is that sometimes, when he touches me, I think he may be someone else, too.

Though my body might be tempted, and he might control everything else, I can’t let him have any piece of my heart. I won’t. But every day, the fight gets harder, and Julius manages to slip past my defenses in the most unexpected ways.

I have to find out the truth about Julius King. Even if it destroys me.

  • For 100 Days

For 100 Days by Lara Adrian

For 100 Days by Lara Adrian is 99c at Amazon! This is a contemporary erotic romance and the first in a trilogy, so there MAY be some cliffhanger action going on, but I didn’t see anything about that in any reviews. Readers also recommend this book for fans of alpha heroes, so if that isn’t you bag, you may want to reconsider!

Struggling artist Avery Ross is barely scraping by. Bartending at a trendy New York City restaurant for an overbearing boss and two weeks away from losing her apartment to a condo developer, she’s desperate for a break. So when she’s offered a temporary housesitting job, she takes it.

Living at one of the poshest addresses in Manhattan is like entering a new world–one that catapults her into the orbit of billionaire Dominic Baine, the darkly handsome, arrogantly alpha resident of the building’s penthouse. What begins as a powerful attraction soon explodes into a white-hot passion neither can deny.

Yet as scorching as their need for each other is, Avery doesn’t expect Nick’s interest in her to last. Nor does she dare to dream that the desire she feels for this scarred, emotionally remote man could deepen into something real. For Avery has secrets of her own–and a past that could destroy her . . . and shatter everything she and Nick share.

FOR 100 DAYS is the first novel in a passionate new contemporary romance trilogy from New York Times and #1 international bestselling author Lara Adrian.

  • Wonder Women

    Wonder Women by Sam Maggs

Wonder Women by Sam Maggs is $1.99! I was really taken by the adorable cover when I first saw it, and awesome women in history is definitely on brand for SBTB. There are over sixty women discussed in this book and many readers noted that they only heard of a small portion. The book does feature some illustrations, though, and I’m not sure how they’d translate digitally.

You may think you know women’s history pretty well, but have you ever heard of. . .

    – Alice Ball, the chemist who developed an effective treatment for leprosy—only to have the credit taken by a man?

    – Mary Sherman Morgan, the rocket scientist whose liquid fuel compounds blasted the first U.S. satellite into orbit?

    – Huang Daopo, the inventor whose weaving technology revolutionized textile production in China—centuries before the cotton gin?

Smart women have always been able to achieve amazing things, even when the odds were stacked against them. In Wonder Women, author Sam Maggs tells the stories of the brilliant, brainy, and totally rad women in history who broke barriers as scientists, engineers, mathematicians, adventurers, and inventors. Also included are interviews with real-life women in STEM careers, an extensive bibliography, and a guide to women-centric science and technology organizations—all to show the many ways the geeky girls of today can help build the future.

  • The MacGruder Brothers Boxed Set

The MacGruder Brothers Boxed Set by Diana Cosby

The MacGruder Brothers Boxed Set by Diana Cosby is $2.99! This set collects all six (SIX!) historical suspense romances. I had to cobble together all of the book descriptions, but $3 for six books is a good deal. But, on a personal note, the series name reminds me a lot of MacGruber, an SNL-sketch-turned-movie. My friends and I made a drinking game for it and it was a disastrous idea.

    The complete MacGruder Brothers series:

    His Captive

With a wastrel brother and a treacherous former fiancé, Lady Nichola Westcott hardly expects the dangerously seductive Scot who kidnaps her to be a man of his word. Though Sir Alexander MacGruder promises not to hurt her, Nichola’s only value is as a pawn to be ransomed.

Alexander’s goal is to avenge his father’s murder, not to become entangled with the enemy. But his desire to keep Nichola with him, in his home—in his bed—unwittingly make her a target for those who have no qualms about shedding English blood.

Now Nichola is trapped—by her powerful attraction to a man whose touch shakes her to the core. Unwilling and unable to resist each other, can Nichola and Alexander save a love that has enslaved them both?

    His Woman

    Trusting Her Was Unthinkable…

Lady Isabel Adair is the last woman Sir Duncan MacGruder wants to see again, much less be obliged to save. Three years ago, Isabel broke their engagement to become the Earl of Frasyer’s mistress, shattering Duncan’s heart and hopes in one painful blow. But Duncan’s promise to Isabel’s dying brother compels him to rescue her from those determined to bring down Scottish rebel Sir William Wallace.

    Resisting Her Was Impossible…

Betraying the man she loved was the only way for Isabel to save her father, but every moment she spends with Duncan reminds her just how much she sacrificed. No one could blame him for despising her, yet Duncan’s misgivings cannot withstand a desire that has grown wilder with time. Now, on a perilous journey through Scotland, two wary lovers must confront both the enemies who will stop at nothing to hunt them down, and the secret legacy that threatens their passion and their lives…

    His Conquest

The Only Man Who Could Save Her…

Linet Dancort will not be sold. But that’s essentially what her brother intends to do – to trade her like so much chattel to widen his already vast scope of influence. Linet will seize any opportunity to escape her fate – and opportunity comes in the form of a rebel prisoner locked in her brother’s dungeon, predatory and fearsome, and sentenced to hang in the morning.

    Would First Need Saving Himself…

Seathan MacGruder, Earl of Grey, is not unused to cheating death. But even this legendary Scottish warrior is surprised when a beautiful Englishwoman creeps to his cell and offers him his freedom. What Linet wants in exchange, though – safe passage to the Highlands – is a steep price to pay. For the only thing more dangerous than the journey through embattled Scotland is the desire that smolders between these two fugitives the first time they touch…

    His Destiny

Their Secrets Will Draw Them Together

As one of England’s most capable mercenaries, Emma Astyn can charm an enemy and brandish a knife with unmatched finesse. Assigned to befriend Dubh Duer, an infamous Scottish rebel, she assumes the guise of innocent damsel Christina Moffat to intercept the writ he’s carrying to a traitorous bishop. But as she gains the dark hero’s confidence and realizes they share a tattered past, compassion–and passion–distract her from the task at hand. . .

But The Truth May Tear Them Apart

His legendary slaying of English knights has won him the name Dubh Duer, but Sir Patrik Cleary MacGruder is driven by duty and honor, not heroics. Rescuing Christina from the clutches of four such knights is a matter of obligation for the Scot. But there’s something alluring about her fiery spirit, even if he has misgivings about her tragic history. Together, they’ll endure a perilous journey of love and betrayal, and a harrowing fight for their lives. . .

    His Seduction

    An Impulsive Act…

Lady Rois Drummond is fiercely devoted to her widowed father, the respected Scottish Earl of Brom. So when she believes he is about to be exposed as a traitor to England, she must think quickly. Desperate, Rois makes a shocking claim against the suspected accuser, Sir Griffin Westcott. But her impetuous lie leaves her in an outrageous circumstance: hastily married to the enemy! Yet Griffin is far from the man Rois thinks he is—and much closer to the man of her dreams…

    An Irresistible Outcome…

Griffin may be an Englishman, but in truth he leads a clandestine life as a spy for Scotland. Refusing to endanger any woman, he has endured the loneliness of his mission. But Rois’s absurd charge has suddenly changed all that. Now, with his cover in jeopardy, Griffin must find a way to keep his secret while keeping his distance from his spirited and tempting new wife—a task that proves more difficult than he ever imagined…

    His Enchantment

She Could Never Live In His World…

Lady Catarine MacLaren is a fairy princess, duty-bound to eschew the human world. But the line between the two realms is beginning to blur. English knights have launched an assault on the MacLarens, just as the families of Comyn have captured the Scottish king and queen. Now, Catarine is torn between loyalty to her people and helping the handsome, rust-haired Lord Trálin rescue the Scottish king…

But He Couldn’t Live Without Her…

As guard to King Alexander, Lord Trálin MacGruder will stop at nothing to defend the Scottish crown against the Comyns. And he finds a sympathetic, and gorgeous, ally in the enigmatic Princess Catarine. As they plot to rescue the kidnapped king and queen, Trálin and Catarine will discover a love made all but impossible by her obligations to the Otherworld.

But a passion this extraordinary may be worth the irreversible sacrifices it demands…

*Scottish medieval romantic suspense – romance edged with danger!

  1. Mrs. Obed Marsh says:

I liked Wonder Women, but a warning: it is written in an extremely casual style, like a Buzzfeed entertainment article. I feel like if Maggs could have inserted reaction gifs into a print book, she would have. But if you can handle that writing style, then definitely go for it!

  2. Deianira says:

Oooh! I’ve been a sucker for “women in…” books (science, politics, literature, I don’t care) since Dad gave me a “famous women in science” book back in 1976. This one’s a definite buy, with an additional copy or three for my nieces!

  3. Liz says:

The hero of the BDSM book is named Dominic. Subtle.

  4. LMC says:

Speaking of Wonder Women, Amighty girl has free downloadable posters of women in science, technology and math. They are beautiful!

I thought KING’S CAPTIVE was very good—and I especially liked the twist that shows up about 3/4 or so of the way through the book. I’ve read (and enjoyed) several other Amber Bardan books, but everything I’ve read by her is always in desperate need of a really good final proofreading and edit.
