This HaBO comes from Julia, who is trying to find a historical romance:
Years ago–2010, maybe earlier?–I read a historical romance, set I think in England in the late 19th or early 20th century.
The hero was a once-great writer who’d ruined his life and career through drug (cocaine?) addiction/abuse, and was now trying to regain his writing mojo and put his life back together while living sober. The heroine was an aspiring writer, and the plot concerned both their professional development and the development of their relationship.
Each chapter began with an awesome epigraph about writing, which I believe were quotes from real-life famous writers (Byron, etc.).
I’ve only read one historical with a hero struggling with addiction, and I don’t think it’s the answer to this HaBO. Anyone else have an inkling?
No clue but the epigraphs part sounds terribly familiar. I hope someone knows this because I want this.
Could this be With Seduction in Mind by Laura Lee Ghurke? I don’t remember epigraphs, but the hero is a recovering cocaine addict who used to be a big deal. And the heroine is an aspiring writer.
*Guhrke (I ALWAYS get that wrong, urgh)
I too think it sounds like Laura Lee Guhrke’s With Seduction in Mind. I remember liking the book quite a bit although I wasn’t convinced the hero would stay clean in the long run. I can’t remember why I felt that way…
I agree with Noelle. When I checked “Look Inside” on Amazon, the chapters are formatted epigraphs at the beginning. I was thinking Laura Lee Guhrke, but couldn’t think of the title….
I think I read the Guhrke book, but it didn’t ring a bell with me. The only historical with a drug-addicted hero that I could think of was Jo Beverley’s To Rescue a Rogue (Dare’s book) and I knew that wasn’t the HABO. Glad y’all knew the right one.
