  • The Bone Witch

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco is $2.99 at Amazon! This might be an expiring Kindle Daily Deal from this weekend, so nab this while you can. This YA fantasy has some Hades/Persephone vibes, which is definitely my catnip. Elyse also mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet.

A Publishers Weekly Most Anticipated Young Adult Book of Spring 2017!

In the captivating start to a new, darkly lyrical fantasy series for readers of Leigh Bardugo and Sabaa Tahir, Tea can raise the dead, but resurrection comes at a price…

Let me be clear: I never intended to raise my brother from his grave, though he may claim otherwise. If there’s anything I’ve learned from him in the years since, it’s that the dead hide truths as well as the living.

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she’s a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha-one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles…and make a powerful choice.

Memoirs of a Geisha meets The Name of the Wind in this brilliant new fantasy series by Rin Chupeco!

  • Queen of Swords

Queen of Swords by Katee Robert

Queen of Swords by Katee Robert is 99c! This is a scifi romance with an royal arranged marriage the heroine is desperately trying to get out of, leading her into the hands of the hero. This has been on my TBR pile for a bit now and readers compared the atmosphere to Firefly. However, others felt the ending didn’t feel fully realized and happened too abruptly. Have you read this one?

When the cards tell Ophelia Leoni she’s supposed to marry the Prince of Hansarda, the gunrunner grits her teeth and boards the starship that comes for her. It doesn’t matter if the ship’s commander is the gorgeous stranger whose bed she just spent a wild, drunken night in. As a Diviner, she’s painfully aware the cards don’t lie. Ever.

Boone O’Keirna knows Ophelia is trouble the second he sees the way she moves. Not about to let the deadly little hellcat marry his sadistic half-brother, Boone pretends to be the Prince’s emissary and kidnaps Ophelia. Too bad they can’t be in the same room without him wanting to throw her out an airlock–or into bed.

Even as they fight each other–and their explosive attraction–Ophelia and Boone sense something is wrong. Too much is going their way. Soon, they realize while the cards may never lie, the truth is sometimes hidden between them…and the future king of Hansarda is not one to take defeat lying down.

  • The Next Best Bride

The Next Best Bride by Kelly McClymer

The Next Best Bride by Kelly McClymer is $1.99! This is the fifth book in the Once Upon a Wedding Series, though it can be read on its own. It was also originally published in 2002 with a different cover. This historical romance has a marriage of convenience. Here’s a fantastic Goodreads review:

Honestly this felt like mostly just a lot of sex scenes strung together by an absurd plot that didn’t even make that much sense…

This USA Today Bestseller is the tale of an unrepentant rake’s marriage of convenience turned upside down when twins switch place at the altar.

When his fiance informs him that she can’t go through with their marriage of convenience Rand Mallon, Earl of Dalby, agrees to marry her twin sister in her place. After all, what difference does it make to him, an unrepentant rake in need only of a legitimate heir?

Helena Fenster looks forward to the earl’s promise to allow her her freedom once he has his heir. She draws the line at giving in to his desire to make sure their attempts for an heir bring her pleasure. Neither one of them can afford to complicate their practical plan with the dangerous fall into true love.

  • Blood and Sand

Blood and Sand by C.V. Wyk

Blood and Sand by C.V. Wyk is $2.99! This is a YA novel set in ancient Rome and seems to have hints of romance and fantasy. Some readers say this was a really surprising read and thinks it should get more hype. However, others didn’t see any sort of emotional connection between the two main characters. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Forged in battle, from the dust of the arena, a legend will rise…

Roma Victrix. The Republic of Rome is on a relentless march to create an empire―an empire built on the backs of the conquered, brought back to Rome as slaves.

Attia was once destined to rule as the queen and swordmaiden of Thrace, the greatest warrior kingdom the world had seen since Sparta. Now she is a slave, given to Xanthus, the Champion of Rome, as a sign of his master’s favor. Enslaved as a child, Xanthus is the preeminent gladiator of his generation.

Against all odds, Attia and Xanthus form a tentative bond. A bond that will spark a rebellion. A rebellion that threatens to bring the Roman Republic to its end―and gives rise to the legend of Spartacus…

Ugh the description for Blood and Sand just makes me ant to go rewach all of Starz’s Spartacus for the 3rd time…

  5. JJB says:

I was so excited to hear about a book with gladiators, but then I see they took the title from the first season of Spartacus and the plot sounds a bit like a reworked version of Crixus and Naevia’s romance from that show…but not as good if ppl aren’t feeling the connection…and maybe it’s all coincidence, but it just makes me feel like I should rewatch the real thing rather than try a watered down YA book, lol!

  6. starlightarcher says:

The Bone Witch is quite good, in my opinion. The sophomore book in the series… that was sadly lacking in my opinion. There’s great world-building in that book (much in the way of Memoirs of a Geisha which it seems to be taking inspiration from). But the second falls into almost all the pitfalls of an angsty teen romance (which since it’s YA that’s to be understood). But the action scenes which repeat themselves ad nauseam where a rehash of the same few plot beats

    Paraphrasing Example if one may-
Secondary characters: “oh noes, we’re being attacked by soldiers who are being mind controlled! How are we gonna get out of this?!”
Main character: “Don’t worry guys, I and my deus ex machina will save us all!”
Everyone: “Woot! We’re saved, let’s rush to the very next action scene where we’ll do the same thing again.”

One gets the feeling the author took a lot of heat for all the world building in her first book and decided to swing in the exact opposite direction, right into territory where she’s not as strong. Using the same action sequence to push her characters around the map on her road-show of a story.

Also, and this is a general note for authors, as a listener of audio books… please read your work’s out loud and trim accordingly. We readers have imaginations. We can fill in some gaps. You don’t actually need to describe everything in such excruciating detail.

I’m sorry to say that while I loved the Bone Witch, I wasn’t able to finish the Heart Forger. But hey, I’m not the target audience, so everything I just said could be your brand of catnip.
