  • The Unyielding

    The Unyielding by Shelly Laurenston

RECOMMENDEDThe Unyielding by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This is the third book in the Call of Crows series, which Sarah absolutely loves.

Sarah gave this book a B:

This series, and each book within it, makes me feel better whenever I’m stressed or feeling powerless and overwhelmed. It acknowledges the rage inherent in feeling powerless, and transforms that rage into useful, powerful action. It’s the best kind of catharsis. The Unyielding may not be my favorite of the series, but I still recommend the Crows books loudly to everyone who will listen to me.

Stieg Engstrom, Angriest Viking Ever, has got big problems. The human Viking Clans of earth are in danger of being obliterated—along with the rest of the world—and the only one who may be able to save them is a super pain-in-the-ass Crow. Most people annoy Stieg, but this is the one woman he really can’t stand…

Erin Amsel loves being a Crow! Why wouldn’t she when the other Viking Clans are so hilariously arrogant and humorless? She’s not about to let all that come to an end! She just didn’t expect to be shoulder to shoulder in battle with Stieg. Then again, he’s so easy to torment—and also kind of cute.

With the future of the world riding on them, Stieg knows he’ll have to put aside his desperate need to kiss the smirk right off Erin’s face. Wait. What? He didn’t mean that—did he? No! They have one goal: To conquer the idiots. Because nothing bugs Stieg more than when idiots win. If only he can keep himself from suddenly acting like one….

  • Moonlight Over Manhattan

Moonlight Over Manhattan by Sarah Morgan

Moonlight Over Manhattan by Sarah Morgan is $1.99 at Amazon! This deal might be on its way out the door since it’s not available at any other retailers. Readers like the shy heroine and the gruff hero, while others found the characters too perfect for their liking.

She’ll risk everything for her own Christmas miracle…

Determined to conquer a lifetime of shyness, Harriet Knight challenges herself to do one thing a day in December that scares her, including celebrating Christmas without her family. But when dog walker Harriet meets her newest client, exuberant spaniel Madi, she adds an extra challenge to her list–dealing with Madi’s temporary dog sitter, gruff doctor Ethan Black, and their very unexpected chemistry.

Ethan thought he was used to chaos, until he met Madi–how can one tiny dog cause such mayhem? To Ethan, the solution is simple–he will pay Harriet to share his New York apartment and provide twenty-four-hour care. But there’s nothing simple about how Harriet makes him feel.

Ethan’s kisses make Harriet shine brighter than the stars over moonlit Manhattan. But when his dog-sitting duties are over and Harriet returns to her own home, will she dare to take the biggest challenge of all–letting Ethan know he has her heart for life, not just for Christmas?

  • Darkness Becomes Her

Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton

Darkness Becomes Her by Kelly Keaton is 99c! This is a YA paranormal romance with some mythology elements, which is totally my catnip. Some readers expressed difficulty getting into the writing, but others loved how strong and confident the heroine was.

A dark and lush paranormal romance set in a richly reimagined New Orleans—now in paperback!

Ari can’t help feeling lost and alone. With teal eyes and freakish silver hair that can’t be changed or destroyed, Ari has always stood out. And after growing up in foster care, she longs for some understanding of where she came from and who she is.

Her search for answers uncovers a message from her long dead mother: Run. Ari can sense that someone, or something, is getting closer than they should. But it’s impossible to protect herself when she doesn’t know what she’s running from or why she is being pursued.

She knows only one thing: she must return to her birthplace of New 2, the lush rebuilt city of New Orleans. Upon arriving, she discovers that New 2 is very…different. Here, Ari is seemingly normal. But every creature she encounters, no matter how deadly or horrifying, is afraid of her.

Ari won’t stop until she knows why. But some truths are too haunting, too terrifying, to ever be revealed.

  • The Fire Sermon

The Fire Sermon by Francesca Haig

The Fire Sermon by Francesca Haig is 99c! This is the first book in The Fire Sermon series and seems to be a dystopian fantasy novel. Many people shelved this as Young Adult on Goodreads, as well. The worldbuilding and detail was a big highlight for readers, but some felt the characters weren’t as interesting as the setting.

The Hunger Games meets Cormac McCarthy’s The Road in this richly imagined first novel in a new postapocalyptic trilogy by award-winning poet Francesca Haig.

Four hundred years in the future, the Earth has turned primitive following a nuclear fire that laid waste to civilization and nature. Though the radiation fallout has ended, for some unknowable reason every person is born with a twin. Of each pair one is an Alpha – physically perfect in every way – and the other an Omega burdened with deformity, small or large.

With the Council ruling an apartheid-like society, Omegas are branded and ostracized while the Alphas have gathered the world’s sparse resources for themselves. Though proclaiming their superiority, for all their effort Alphas cannot escape one harsh fact: Whenever one twin dies, so does the other. Cass is a rare Omega, one burdened with psychic foresight. While her twin, Zach, gains power on the Alpha Council, she dares to dream the most dangerous dream of all: equality. For daring to envision a world in which Alphas and Omegas live side by side as equals, both the Council and the Resistance have her in their sights.

  1. JudyW says:

I could NOT get into the Call of Crows series. Many people thought these books were just hilarious but I thought the humor way to frat boy and distracting. Any opinion of they are all the same in terms of tone?

  2. Ren Benton says:

@JudyW: Laurenston’s authorial voice is very consistent. If one book doesn’t do it for you, there’s very little chance a second will.

  3. Kareni says:

@JudyW ~ you are not alone. I did not read far into The Unleashing before putting it aside.

  4. Starling says:

Yeah, I read two Call of Crows books but they made me twitchy. Since being in a sorority is my worst nightmare, I just couldn’t really enjoy any of it. No privacy! Lots of new people! Unwritten rules! Mandatory socializing! I’m breaking out into hives just thinking about it.

  5. SB Sarah says:

I’ll absolutely be the first to say that Laurenston’s writing is very unique. I don’t think there are many who write like she does, in terms of fantasy, camp, and voice. When I recommend her, it’s usually with a caveat that if it works for you, it’ll be great, and if it doesn’t, I get it. It’s very campy sometimes, which I love, and it’s often silly (again, I love that) but I know it’s not for everyone.

  6. Sophie M says:

I read Darkness Becomes Her several years ago and adored it. The world building is really fascinating. There are more books in the series – I’d say to stop after 3, it ties up well and the 4th was not as good. Maybe iy got better, but I stopped at 4.

  7. Maite says:

TW for “The Unyielding”: there’s a sex scene with DUBIOUS* consent. And I liked the book, but that moment just throws me off.

*(Personally, I think it’s rape that gets a pass because it’s the female raping the male, but there’s a long discussion on the blog post)

  8. Ele says:

I actually like the Crow series alot, because its focus is on powerful women working together. And it is really funny. That said, as Maite noted, this particular one of the series has a consent problem –the heroine doesn’t just jump a guy unexpectedly, but this is a guy with whom she had a problematic (non-sexual) history, and the guy is generally recognized to be vulnerable given his background. Her friends do give her grief for “taking advantage” of him, but this being paranormal romance, all is forgiven. And even aside from this, I think alot of people will find the heroine difficult to relate to — she’s unrepentantly obnoxious.

  9. Georgina says:

The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory is 99c at Amazon.

  10. @JudyW – I agree. I can’t get into the author’s voice as Laurenston. That being said, I liked her better as GA Aiken, and the dragon series she’s got going under that name works a lot better for me, so it may be worth giving a try if those books sound interesting to you

  11. JoannaV says:

I’ll give another vote for the Call of Crows series, loved that they were kick ass women, and loved the mythology she used and added to!

Also there are currently a lot of Sourcebooks Casablanca ebooks on sale for $.99. Authors include Tamara Morgan, Jane Ashford, Isabel Cooper, Shana Galen and many more. Sorry I don’t have a link. I found a posting at DailyCheapReads blog.

  12. Susan says:

@JudyW: Yes. I read The Unleashing and didn’t continue with the series even tho I already owned the other books.

Like others, Laurenston/Aiken is hit or miss for me. I mostly didn’t care for the Aiken dragon books. I really loved some of the shifter/pride books, but disliked others. I haven’t read any of the honey badger books, but will probably pick them up if they ever go on sale–there have been enough good Laurenston reads that I remain optimistic.
