  • The Devil’s Daughter

The Devil’s Daughter by Katee Robert

RECOMMENDEDThe Devil’s Daughter by Katee Robert is $1.99 at Amazon! Elyse read this and gave it a B grade, saying that it could have used a bit more romance:

The Devil’s Daughter is high on tension, but light on gore and scares, so readers typically leery of suspense might consider this novel.

Growing up in a small town isn’t easy, especially when you’re the daughter of a local cult leader. Ten years ago, Eden Collins left Clear Springs, Montana, and never once looked back. But when the bodies of murdered young women surface, their corpses violated and marked with tattoos worn by her mother’s followers, Eden, now an FBI agent, can’t turn a blind eye. To catch the killer, she’s going to have to return to the fold.

Sheriff Zach Owens isn’t comfortable putting Eden in danger, even if she is an elite agent. And he certainly wasn’t expecting to be so attracted to her. As calm and cool as she appears, he knows this can’t be a happy homecoming. Zach wants to protect her—from her mother, the cult, and the evil that lurks behind its locked gates. But Eden is his only key to the tight-lipped group, and she may just be closer to the killer than either one of them suspects…

  • Bad for Her

Bad for Her by Christi Barth

Bad for Her by Christi Barth is 99c! This contemporary romance is the first book in the Bad Boys Gone Good series, which features heroes in the witness protection program. Readers loved the heroine, so much so, that they said she outshone the hero when it came to keeping their interest. It has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

USA Today bestselling author Christi Barth launches a sexy new series about three bad-boy brothers in Witness Protection who are about to learn that going good is harder than they thought…

Doctor Mollie Vickers loves the tight-knit community of her tiny Oregon town. But she’s not a fan of the limited dating options. Sleep with a guy who tried to copy off her in junior high? Pass. Mollie’s sex life is flatlining… until a deliciously handsome man she’s never seen before stops to help her fix a flat tire.

As an ex-mobster, Rafe Maguire’s no saint. But he’s trying to turn over a new leaf. Although he probably shouldn’t kiss the hot doctor on the side of the highway. Or suggest a no-strings fling with a woman he has no business pursuing. Rafe’s life is too complicated for love—his new WITSEC-provided identity doesn’t fit him at all and there’s a U.S. Marshal watching his every move. He can’t tell Mollie the truth… but their chemistry is scorching and being good doesn’t mean he can’t be a little bad.

Mollie can’t resist the guy who looks rough, talks tough, and is loyal to the bone. But it’s obvious Rafe is keeping secrets. When the truth comes out, Mollie must decide if she could ever love an ex-mobster… or if this bad boy has truly gone good.

  • One Night More

One Night More by Mandy Baxter

One Night More by Mandy Baxter is 99c! This is a contemporary romance with a little bit of romantic suspense. The heroine has a one night stand with a man who will later become her bodyguard. Talk about awkward. Some readers felt the heroine suffered from a case of TSTL, while others said the book reminded them of Julie James’ FBI/US Attorney series (which I think is quite the compliment).

Journalist Harper Allen still remembers the handsome stranger who saved from disaster—and the sizzling one-night stand that followed. Too bad he left without a word or a clue to his real identity . . .

Then, a year later, Harper comes face to face with the man when he’s assigned to hide her from a senator’s assassin. Galen Kelly hasn’t forgotten a single sensual minute of his night with Harper . . . or the fact that she betrayed him. With the FBI also on their trail, he has to pretend he’s never met her—or risk both their lives. But as danger closes in, Galen may not be able to protect himself from taking the biggest risk of all . . .

  • Hunted by the Others

Hunted by the Others by Jess Haines

Hunted by the Others by Jess Haines is 99c! This is the first book in the H&W Investigations series and features all sorts of supernatural creatures. I’m a little unsure if this is paranormal romance (it was categorized as such on Amazon, but we all know how reliable that is) or if it was urban fantasy with some romantic elements. Reviewers seems to be just as on the fence.

In a town full of vampires, mages, and werewolves, detective work can be dangerous: “Dark and sexy . . . a paranormal treat” (Lara Adrian, New York Times–bestselling author).

Shiarra Waynest’s job was dangerous enough when her client base was strictly mortal. But ailing finances have forced her to accept a lucrative case that could save her firm—if it doesn’t kill her first. Shiarra has signed on to work for a high-level mage to recover an ancient artifact owned by one of New York’s most powerful vampires.

As soon as the detective meets the sexy, mesmerizing vampire Alec Royce, she knows her assignment is even more complicated than she thought. With a clandestine anti-Other group trying to recruit her and magi being eliminated, Shiarra needs backup. She enlists her ex-boyfriend—a werewolf whose non-furry form is disarmingly appealing—and a nerdy mage with surprising talents. But it may not be enough. In a city where the undead roam, magic rules, and even the Others aren’t always what they seem, Shiarra has just become the secret weapon in a battle between good and evil—whether she likes it or not.

Never Pick Up Hitch-Hikers! by Ellis Peters is on sale for $1.99. I had added this to my wishlist because it came up in the last Whatcha Reading post.

  2. Sue says:

Guys, a note about BAD FOR HER. I ended up skimming 3/4 of the book before returning it early to the library. This is why, and YMMV re: this auto-fail that I have: the heroine is a doctor and breaks privacy laws within the FIRST CHAPTER of her appearance. Like, I get that it’s a small town and everybody is in everybody’s business and that’s all fine and good for private citizens, but I have a HUGE problem with it when the TOWN DOCTOR is gossping. NO. NO. Not a good quality in my book. I nearly DNFed THE WEDDING DATE for the same HIPAA-breaking reason. Dear authors who have main characters as physicians: please find another way to move your plot along. Privacy laws and the doctor-patient confidentiality compact are sacrosanct to me.

  4. Marissa says:

Sue, agh! That’s awful! Breach of privacy is a deal breaker for me, too. It automatically means the character is egregiously in the wrong. I’m a nurse and have practiced in a small town and a big city, and while privacy is sacrosanct no matter what, I think it is even more important in a small town setting. My patients need to know they can trust me. They don’t have to worry that they’ll run into my mom at the local grocery store and she’ll have heard something from me (my mom has had people approach her and tell her that they were my patient, and were kind of surprised that she had no idea, so even she explains that I *never* share information from work).

  5. Vicki says:

Heck, I had that talk again today with a 13 year old. “You need to know that everything here is private. My child goes to your school and I will never even mention to him that I know you, let alone anything that happens here. If you want to tell him, you can, I never will.” Big deal breaker for me, too.

Will also mention that I read The Devil’s Daughter and did like it. Would give it a B- to B. A lot of my catnip, having known various cult leaders at various times.

  6. Sue says:

@Marissa, yes exactly. I’m a physician in LA and the number of times people have asked me if I’ve seen any celebrities at the hospital is unreal. I’ve seen people who are family friends or parents of friends, and I’ll never mention I ever saw them. I’ve even stopped really talking about people’s lives medically even if they told me in a non-doctor situation like a dinnertime conversation, because you never really know when people are expecting you to keep confidentiality, so when in doubt, I keep confidentiality. I’m always surprised that people are surprised by that. You should expect more from your healthcare professionals!

  7. Sydneysider says:

That’s also a deal breaker for me. That and health care professionals getting involved with the patients they are treating. Automatic DNF.

  8. Leigh Kramer says:

Word to the wise, everyone with HIPAA/ethical violation deal-breakers, stay far away from Katherine Center’s How To Walk Away. You will want to throw your copy across the room and be unable to keep your mouth shut when anyone comments about how much they enjoyed it. It’s driving me nuts that people are praising this novel!

  9. Pippa from SF says:

I totally one-clicked One More Night last night after reading about it here and I just can’t put it down. Definitely has a Julie James vibe!

  10. ClaireC says:

That cover for Hunted by the Others … why does she have laser sights on her handguns (not great for sneaking around), and FOR HEAVEN’S SAKE take your finger off the trigger until you’re ready to fire! The gunsmith’s daughter in me rages a little bit whenever I see bad gun safety being practiced on covers. The teen goth in me would very much like those boots she’s wearing, but also wonders how she sits with all those knives at the waist.
