You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!
This HaBO request is from Anna, who wants to find this historical romance:
So, I read a book and I remember it set up for the next installment in the series. That set up is what I’m looking for.
This would be a historical, taking place in England. The previous book had ended with a woman running away from her engagement. The heroine was supposedly a perfect match, but was quiet and withdrawn. Hero was really well dressed. They were betrothed, but he neglected to notice or remark on her drifting further and further away. She runs off and when he finally finds her she’s visibly pregnant. I think she might have one of those managing mothers who forced her to get engaged so she wouldn’t be ruined. Not sure if the baby is the hero’s or not.
It sounds like crazy sauce and I want a serving of it.
Can we help her out?
Sounds like Eloisa James’ new Wilde series, except she has a child with her when he finds her, not pregnant.
Yep: Agree with previous poster, I’m pretty sure that’s how Wilde in Love sets up the next book in the series.
That’s also basically the premise behind how Lord John Grey’s brother Harold, the Duke of Pardloe, marries his wife Minerva, like three months before his heir is born.
I can’t remember if it was part of a series, but A Scandalous Marriage by Cathy Maxwell also has the hero finding a very pregnant heroine. He had been previously rejected by her because their families were enemies. She was disgraced (maybe duped by a cad into a fake marriage and abandoned?) and she was working as a farm hand feeding pigs when the hero found her.
IIRC, this is also the premise behind one of the Horsemen novels by Mary Balogh—I think it’s Unforgiven? I haven’t read it, however, so can’t affirm anything.
I am embarassed to say it must be Wilde in Love, which I read less than a year ago. Thanks, Bitchery!
In “A Precious Jewel” by Mary Balogh the heroine runs away, and is very pregnant when the hero finds her. But she was his mistress, and a former prostitute, not his fiance. A rather daring and original premise, for the time it was written.
