  • Every Heart a Doorway

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

    UPDATE: Deal no longer valid.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. This book is talked about constantly in my monthly book group and readers love the premise. Though it’s on the shorter side. I know I was surprised at that when I bought it in physical form.

Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
    No Solicitations
    No Visitors
    No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

    No matter the cost.

  • Dreamer’s Pool

    Dreamer’s Pool by Juliet Marillier

Dreamer’s Pool by Juliet Marillier is $2.99! This is the first book in the Blackthorn & Grim series, and the second book is on sale for $1.99! I love Marillier’s writing and world building, but at times, the books can venture into boring territory. Any other Marillier fans out there?

In exchange for help escaping her long and wrongful imprisonment, embittered magical healer Blackthorn has vowed to set aside her bid for vengeance against the man who destroyed all that she once held dear. Followed by a former prison mate, a silent hulk of a man named Grim, she travels north to Dalriada. There she’ll live on the fringe of a mysterious forest, duty bound for seven years to assist anyone who asks for her help.

Oran, crown prince of Dalriada, has waited anxiously for the arrival of his future bride, Lady Flidais. He knows her only from a portrait and sweetly poetic correspondence that have convinced him Flidais is his destined true love. But Oran discovers letters can lie. For although his intended exactly resembles her portrait, her brutality upon arrival proves she is nothing like the sensitive woman of the letters.

With the strategic marriage imminent, Oran sees no way out of his dilemma. Word has spread that Blackthorn possesses a remarkable gift for solving knotty problems, so the prince asks her for help. To save Oran from his treacherous nuptials, Blackthorn and Grim will need all their resources: courage, ingenuity, leaps of deduction, and more than a little magic.

  • Knowing the Score

Knowing the Score by Kat Latham

Knowing the Score by Kat Latham is 99c This is a contemporary sports romance – set in the world of rugby. I mentioned this book on a previous podcast episode. It has a 3.7 average, and readers at GR liked the humor and the dialogue between the hero and heroine (though some reviews warn of a slow start to the story).

Rugby player Spencer Bailey is determined to win a spot on England’s World Cup team. But with a month break before the selectors start watching him, he’s eager to have fun with a woman who knows the score: the relationship will end when rugby season begins. The lovely American Caitlyn Sweeney seems perfect for the role of temporary lover, since her visa will run out soon anyway.

Caitlyn works for an international disaster relief organization and can handle the world’s worst crises, but she flinches from her own. Her past has left her with a fear of intimacy so deep that she has trouble getting close to anyone—until she meets sexy Spencer. His hot body and easygoing nature are too much for even her to resist.

Neither Caitlyn nor Spencer expects to fall hard for each other. But with their relationship deadline approaching, the old rules of the game seem less important than before…until past secrets surface, challenging everything they thought they knew about each other.

  • The Asset

The Asset by Anna del Mar

The Asset by Anna del Mar is $1.99! This is the first book in the Wounded Warrior series. Several reviewers warn that there’s some serious, triggering material, mainly in the characters’ backstories. But others say as del Mar’s debut romance, it’s a great read. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Anna del Mar’s explosive, sexy debut novel in the Wounded Warrior series, perfect for fans of Lisa Marie Rice and Lora Leigh—the story of a woman desperate to escape her dangerous past and the navy SEAL who would lay down his life to save her.

Ash Hunter knows what it is to run. A SEAL gravely injured in Afghanistan, he’s gone AWOL from the military hospital. Physically and mentally scarred, he returns home to his grandmother’s isolated cottage—and finds a beautiful, haunted stranger inside.

    Like recognizes like.

Lia Stewart’s in hiding from the cartel she barely escaped alive, holed up in this small Rocky Mountain town. Surviving, but only just. Helping the wounded warrior on her doorstep is the right thing to do…it’s loving him that might get them both killed.

Soon, Ash realizes he’s not the only one tormented by the past. Pushing the limits of his broken body, testing the boundaries of her shattered soul, he’ll protect Lia until his last breath.

Am I only one looking at the last cover and going, “But why is he blue?”

  2. Herberta says:

Lostshadows—maybe he took too much colloidal silver?

  3. cbackson says:

I continue to think that Seanann McGuire is one of our most underappreciated modern writers. A guess it’s hard to say a three- or four-time Hugo nominee is underappreciated, but there’s far less talk about her in the SF/F world than she merits.

  4. Bem says:

Juliet Marillier is one of my favourite authors!
I love the Sevenwater books, especially the first two, but Blackthorn & Grim is also great!
(And Marillier is also part of a druid order, which is kind of cool!)

  5. KateB says:

I love Every Heart a Doorway! It’s familiar but McGuire handles human emotion so well, the story is fresh and in parts, almost shocking.

  6. TAM says:

I loved the Kat Latham for lots of reasons but I especially enjoyed the rugby setting. I played in college, but I think it would be interesting/accessible to people without any background.

  7. Caitlin says:

So, hey, Every Heart a Doorway is $3.49 today. So there’s still a deal, albeit less of one!

  8. KellyM says:

I picked up Every Heart a Doorway just now for $2.99 and when I checked back a second later it was $9.99. Hmm either I am all of a sudden lucky or something weird went on.

  9. Caitlin says:

It looks like it just bumped up to $9.99. Rats. :'(

  10. Lirrias says:

Just re-read Marillier’s “Son of the Shadows”! I love her writing. Never got to this series as I heard there was little to no romance in it.

  11. Leanne H. says:

I love Juliet Marillier, but couldn’t get into Blackthorn & Grim. I’ve been trying to read Dreamer’s Pool for about two years now. I keep advancing about 5% of the way through the e-book when I’m severely bored in a doctor’s office or on a plane! I love Blackthorn and Grim as characters, but the burn is just too slow for me. I agree with Lirrias – need more romance… and I’m not a huge fan of the head-hopping into other characters in the book. But the author herself is amazing!!!
