January Movie Selection: Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong (2015)

After we watched Saving Face for the SB Movie Matinee in October, I favorited a bunch of films in the suggestions area. Since then, my algorithm suggestions have been getting better and better. Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong showed up, and when I saw it on a few “best of” lists, I had to add it to our schedule.

This film was written and directed by Emily Ting, and it sounds adorable. Here’s the synopsis:

In this sparkling romance, Ruby (Jamie Chung), a Chinese American toy designer from LA, visits Hong Kong for the first time on business. Finding herself stranded, she meets Josh (Bryan Greenberg), an American expat who shows her the city. Meandering through nighttime streets pulsing with energy and possibility, they fall into a winding and carefree conversation, buoyed by an undeniable attraction.

As effervescent as a perfect first date, Emily Ting’s charming directorial debut takes full advantage of the chemistry of its leads, the playfulness of their exchanges, and the magical landscape that is Hong Kong at night. IT’S ALREADY TOMORROW IN HONG KONG is written and directed by Emily Ting and produced by Ting and Sophia Shek.

Travel? Dialogue? Scenery pr0n? Here for this! Reviews are mixed, but I’m thinking this may be a film I will enjoy. Have you seen it?

Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong is on Netflix! It’s also available for around $4-7 to rent and $7-10 to buy digitally on iTunes, Google:Play, and Amazon, and the DVD can be found at your local library, or cheaply online in new and used condition from Amazon or Alibris.

Join us Sunday, January 29, for our discussion of Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong!

I really like this one! I can’t remember if I suggested this one using the form or not. I may have watched it a few weeks after the club was started. I will say there may be a couple of things that could bug people and probably may have bothered me in a book more (I don’t want to spoil the movie by listing them), but neither hurt my enjoyment of the movie. It’s always nice to see diversity in a romance and there’s great chemistry between the leads (the actor and actress are married in real life). Plus, if anyone else is trying to watch 52 films directed by women as a resolution, this counts as one.

I would also say that if you watch this movie and enjoy it, but haven’t watched the Before trilogy (Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, and Before Midnight) you should check them out. They’re similar in the walking/talking romance with lots of scenery porn (the second one less than the first and last), but they’re much better, in my opinion, than Already Tomorrow in Hong Kong (not to take anything away from this movie).

Not sure if I miss the mention of this in the post, but it’s streaming on Netflix US (not sure about other countries).

@CelineB: Thanks for the heads up about Netflix! Edited and included a link in the post!

Jamie Chung and Bryan Greenberg are currently dating too! I think they may have met (or at least fell in relationship) because of working on this together.

What time is the discussion on 1/29?

  5. @SB Sarah says:

Hey Barb! It’s not a live chat this time – we’ll post an entry with our reaction and grade, and you’re invited to tell us what you thought in the comments. But if we do a live chat in the future, I’ll definitely post the date and time prominently!
