  • Dark Prince

    Dark Prince by Christine Feehan

RECOMMENDED:  Dark Prince by Christine Feehan is $1.99 and this is the first book in Feehan’s very much amazing Carpathian series. $1.99 is a terrific price if you’ve never read it but Be Ye Warned: crack is within these pages. Sarah reviewed this edition in 2011 and gave it a C+, but even though she could identify the problematic parts and disliked them, she couldn’t stop reading. She also admits to reading it six-plus times:

Dark Prince was the first of these types of books that I read, and I am still somewhat baffled as to why I find it so fascinating, even in a larger edition, in a hardcover, for the third or fourth time. I can only surmise that a book like this, something that was so new, so powerful and so different, even after it’s been imitated countless times, doesn’t diminish with time. The powerful innovation of the forerunner of a genre doesn’t lose it’s effect. At least, it doesn’t on me.

If you’ve never read the Carpathians, clear your schedule and enjoy the crack. The Carpathian series was a big favorite of Sarah’s, and one of the earliest entries she wrote for SBTB outlines the Carpathian Madness – the elements that are in every Carpathian story and why she reads them anyway because crack.

Carpathians are an immortal race of beings with animal instincts. Every Carpathian male is drawn to his life mate: a Carpathian or human female able to provide the light to his darkness. Without her, the beast within slowly consumes the man until turning vampire is the only option.

Raven Whitney is a psychic who has used her gift to help the police track down a serial killer. Now she is determined to escape the glare of recent publicity for the peace and quiet of the Carpathian Mountains.

Prince Mikhail Dubrinsky is the leader of his people but, as his ancient Carpathian race grows ever closer to extinction, he is close to giving in to the heavy weight of loneliness and despair. From the moment their minds touch, Raven and Mikhail form a connection. But there are those who incorrectly view all Carpathians as vampires, and are determined to give their extinction a helping hand.

  • Blade Dance

    Blade Dance by D.L. McDermott

Blade Dance by D.L. McDermott is $1.99! This is the fourth book in the Cold Iron series and it seems right up my alley, however reviews on Goodreads mention that it’s a more fulfilling story if you’ve read the books before it. Boo. Readers loved the hero in this story because he was seen as a villain in a previous book, and McDermott did a good job making him vulnerable. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

For fans of Jeaniene Frost and Kresley Cole, Blade Dance is the fourth book in D.L. McDermott’s fast-paced and sexy paranormal romance series about the Boston Fae—a full-length novel available exclusively in ebook!

Boston schoolteacher Ann Phillips knows better than to trust the Fae, but when one of her second graders turns up to class with both arms covered in magical tattoos, she has no choice but to turn to Finn MacUmhaill, the dangerous and charismatic Fae crime lord who controls Charlestown, for help.

Finn MacUmhaill, leader of the Fianna, has had his eye on Ann Phillips for months, but a recent showdown with an old enemy has left his house broken. Between the crippling blow dealt to the Fianna and his son’s recent defection, he hasn’t had time to woo the pretty redhead. When she turns up on his doorstep asking for his help, he thinks he’s found the way to win her, but before he can act, the child goes missing, kidnapped by a rogue Druid who has discovered the key to destroying the wall between worlds.

Now, Finn and Ann must ally themselves with an old adversary—the treacherous Prince Consort—to save the boy, or risk the destruction of the wall that keeps the corrupt Fae Queen and her Court at bay…

  • Beyond the Darkness

Beyond the Darkness by Katie Reus

Beyond the Darkness by Katie Reus is 99c! This is a paranormal romance with dragons and the ol’ “mated” trope. Readers mentioned that the events in this book (the third in the series) take place about a month after the second book, so it might be beneficial to read them in order. Readers also said that the book has a good blend of romantic suspense along with the paranormal romance. Any fans of the Darkness series in the Bitchery?

Now that she has her freedom, she’s not giving it up.

Dragon shifter Keelin Petronilla spent centuries in forced hibernation dreaming of one thing: freedom. • Getting Wilde

    Getting Wilde by Jenn Stark

Getting Wilde by Jenn Stark is $3.99! This is a new urban fantasy series set in Las Vegas, with a woman who hunts magical artifacts. A few readers complained that it suffers from first-book syndrome in that it has a lot of setup, but little action. However, many admit to wanting to read more about Sara and the world Stark created. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Using her well-worn Tarot deck, magical-artifacts hunter Sara Wilde can find anything—for a price. And the price had better be right, since she needs to finance her own personal mission to rescue several young psychics recently sold on the paranormal black market.

Enter Sara’s most mysterious client and occasional lover, the wickedly sexy Magician, with a job that could yield the ultimate payday. All she’ll have to do is get behind Vatican walls… and steal the Devil himself.

But play with the Devil and you’re bound to get burned.

Pressure mounts for Sara to join the Magician’s ancient and mysterious Arcana Council, as militant forces unleashed by even darker powers seek to destroy all magic—including the young psychics Sara is desperate to keep safe. The Council may be their only hope. . . but it could also expose Sara’s own dark past.

From the twisting catacombs of Rome to the neon streets of Vegas, Sara confronts ancient enemies, powerful demigods, a roiling magical underworld about to explode… and immortal passions that might require the ultimate sacrifice. But oh, what a way to go.

No matter how the cards play out, things are about to get Wilde.

  1. Getting Wilde WAS on my TBR until I read a recent review. I have doubts, now.

  2. Lostshadows says:

I picked up that edition of Dark Prince last time I was at Dollar Tree. I’m hoping it’s better than the other, much later, Carpathian book I tried reading. (DNF after a “oh hell no” moment that I can’t remember the details of.)

  3. esha says:

JR ward was my intro to the romance genre, and I devoured all the books in her series up to that point, so I was searching for something similar and the “if you liked this” window on Amazon recommended this series. So I borrowed Dark Prince. It was a big DNF for me, I couldn’t even make it past the first third. But there are 50 gazillion books in the series, if try again maybe I’ll find one I don’t hate.

  4. Olivia says:

Okay, I feel like I need to go re-read Dark Prince now. I’m a big fan of the series, yes sometimes it can be a little repetitive but whatever, still gots lots of my catnip in the books.

But I do want to ask, the newer release of Dark Prince has apparently been “updated”. Is there anybody here who has read both the original 1980s release and this new one. When I started reading these a few years ago it was before the re-release, so I started with the 1980s one, and I’ve been wondering if the new one was changed that much…

  5. Joanna says:

@Olivia. Amazon says this was an expanded edition with 100 new pages – so it sounds like longer. Who knows if that makes it better or worse? I haven’t read these so I don’t know, maybe someone else will let us know.

  6. KellyM says:

Not a paranormal, but Women Heroes of World War I: 16 Remarkable Resisters, Soldiers, Spies, and Medics (Women of Action) is on sale for $2.99 on Kindle Daily Deals right now.

  7. Katie Lynn says:

Nice Dragons Finish Last, which I think was mentioned in a What You’re Reading post, is on sale for $.99 today as well.

  8. Alina says:

At first I was excited to try out the Carpathian series now that the first book is on sale, but then I saw the hero’s name and just… it has fake Russians in it, doesn’t it? Or fake-Eastern-Europeans that aren’t distinguishable and just include whatever bits the author remembered about any EE cultures they’ve heard of.

Is it bad that I assume failure to research on an author’s part right off the bat? Can anyone who’s read the book comment on whether there’s research fail and how bad it is?
