616. Reading Rubrics with Shana

Never Cross a Highlander
A | BN | K
In a review for Never Cross a Highlander, Shana came up with the ACAB scale, or the Alyssa Cole Anti-Slavery Book Scale, which ranks how central the horror of slavery is to the storyline. I asked her to tell me all about it, and Shana, kindly, said yes.

Our conversation grows (of course) to include the field of narrative therapy and bibliotherapy, other evaluative rubrics for reading, and the subgenres, professions, settings we can, and cannot, relax into.

NB: I had a cold when we recorded, so apologies for my very low voice.

Savory & Supernatural

Support for this episode comes from Savory & Supernatural by Karen Healey, now available in audio (and the audiobook is terrific!)

Savory & Supernatural is a super-cute, extremely cozy witchy romance. Kingston, an ambitious, talented actor – who 100% absolutely does NOT believe in the supernatural – picks up a trinket on the beach while on location in New Zealand. Then weird and spooky things keep happening.

Down-on-her-luck Amalia developed cooking magic instead of plant magic, which made her the black sheep of her family. Then she started seeing dead people. She’s got a great gig running a food truck on the set of a movie being shot nearby, except for Kingston, who is too hot to be believed, and the fact that he’s being haunted by an angry ghost that only she can see.

So we’ve got ghosts, witches, forced proximity, and celebrity romance, plus behind the scenes details of a movie set – the entire novella is a ride, and the audiobook is terrific. Author Karen Healey has won both the Sir Julius Vogel Award and an Aurealis Award for Excellence in Speculative Fiction.

Savory & Supernatural is perfect for fans of A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon and The Ex Hex, and it’s available everywhere you like to buy ebooks and audiobooks. And this is VERY COOL: did you know if you’re a Spotify Premium subscriber, you can listen to Savory & Supernatural on Spotify for free? Give it a listen!
