  • The Art of Scandal

The Art of Scandal by Regina Black

The Art of Scandal by Regina Black is $3.99! It’s also a Kindle Daily Deal. This was mentioned on a podcast episode over the summer with librarian Robin Bradford, who had this high up on her TBR pile.

“Love would be so much easier if it were perfect…”

On the night of her husband Matt’s fortieth birthday, Rachel Abbott receives a sexy, explicit text from her husband that she quickly realizes was meant for another woman. Divorce is inevitable, and Rachel is determined not to leave her thirteen-year marriage empty handed. Meanwhile, Matt, a rising star mayor with his eye on the White House, can’t afford a messy split in the middle of his reelection campaign. They strike a deal: Rachel gets one million dollars and their lavish house in the wealthy DC suburb of Oasis Springs, as long as she keeps playing the ideal Black trophy wife until the election.

Then Rachel meets Nathan Vasquez, a very handsome, very lost twenty-six-year-old artist, and their connection makes Rachel forget about being the perfect politician’s wife. As Rachel reawakens Nathan’s long-dormant artistic aspirations, their attraction becomes impossible to resist. But secrets are hard to keep in a town like Oasis Springs, and Nathan has a few of his own. With the risk of scandal looming and their hearts on the line, they’ll have to decide whether the possibility of losing everything is worth taking a chance on love.

The Art of Scandal is a sizzling, conversation-starting debut about rekindling passion, the transformative power of art, and finding love in unexpected places.

  • Leslie F*cking Jones

Leslie F*cking Jones by Leslie Jones

Leslie F*cking Jones by Leslie Jones is $3.99! This is another KDD for today. It’s memoir that we featured on a previous Hide Your Wallet and I bet it’s fantastic on audio. Did any of you pick it up?

Hey you guys, it’s Leslie. I’m excited to share my story with you.

Now, I’m gonna be honest: Some of the details might be vague because a b*tch is fifty-five and she’s smoked a ton of weed. But while bits might be a touch hazy, I can promise you the underlying truth is REAL. Whether I’m talking about my childhood growing up in the South, my early stand-up days driving from gig to gig through the darkest parts of our country and praying I wouldn’t get murdered, what Chris Rock told Lorne Michaels, that time I wanted to shoot Whoopi Goldberg on SNL, and yeah, I’ll tell you all about Ghostbusters and the nudes and Supermarket Sweep and The Daily Show . . . I’m sharing it all in these pages. It’s not easy being a woman in comedy, especially when you’re a tall-*ss Black woman with a trumpet voice. I have to fight so that no one takes me for granted, and no one takes advantage. These are the stories that explain why. (Cue the Law & Order theme.)

  • The Lord of Stariel

The Lord of Stariel by AJ Lancaster

RECOMMENDED: The Lord of Stariel by AJ Lancaster is FREE! Ellen gave it an A:

I adored this book and I NEEDED to tell the Bitchery about it. This is a whimsical, fun, sweet fantasy mystery with wonderful characters and a healthy dollop of romance.

The Lord of Stariel is dead. Long live the Lord of Stariel. Whoever that is.

Everyone knows who the magical estate will choose for its next ruler. Or do they?

Will it be the lord’s eldest son, who he despised?

His favourite nephew, with the strongest magical land-sense?

His scandalous daughter, who ran away from home years ago to study illusion?

Hetta knows it won’t be her, and she’s glad of it. Returning home for her father’s funeral, all Hetta has to do is survive the family drama and avoid entanglements with irritatingly attractive local men until the Choosing. Then she can leave.

But whoever Stariel chooses will have bigger problems than eccentric relatives to deal with.

    Winged, beautifully deadly problems.

For the first time in centuries, the fae are returning to the Mortal Realm, and only the Lord of Stariel can keep the estate safe.

    In theory.

The Lord of Stariel is the first book in the Stariel quartet.

  • The Shadow and the Sun

The Shadow and the Sun by Monica Enderle Pierce

RECOMMENDED: The Shadow and the Sun by Monica Enderle Pierce is FREE! Ellen gave this one a B:

In spite of some weird moments, I’m glad I read this book. The core romance is strong and has the trope-y fantasy flavor I crave. The Shadow and the Sun feels a little like a fantasy romance diamond in the rough and I think if the premise and main tropes appeal, it’s a fun choice.

When a world’s fate rests on her sword, will a loyal soldier obey her king or follow her heart?

Militess Halina is an accomplished leader, a fearsome soldier, and the unapologetically-tough bastard daughter of Ursinum’s king. When she’s ordered to gain the allegiance of Shadow Mage Gethen — a notoriously dangerous necromancer whose brother is an enemy king — she assumes the negotiations will be simple: Either he’ll pledge his loyalty or she’ll remove his head.

But the Shadow Mage isn’t what she expected, nor is his situation. Intriguing and powerful, Gethen’s the only man preventing the return of an ancient menace that threatens their world. And though he hates to admit it, his sorcery is failing and he needs her help.

Suddenly Ursinum’s dispute with Gethen’s brother seems petty, and Halina must decide who’s best served by her sword: her king or every man, woman, and child in the four kingdoms and beyond.

Magic, adventure, suspense, and love abound in the first novel of Monica Enderle Pierce’s Militess & Mage series. Epic fantasy that’s perfect for fans of sword and sorcery fiction with a touch of romance.

  3. Sara says:

    I had to laugh:

“Then Rachel meets Nathan Vasquez, a very handsome, very lost twenty-six-year-old artist, and their connection makes Rachel forget about being the perfect politician’s wife. As Rachel reawakens Nathan’s long-dormant artistic aspirations…”

He’s 26 & an artist – how long could his artistic aspirations have been dormant??

    Lol

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Sara: I was thinking the same thing. In this old lady’s opinion, Nathan needs to be a few years older to make the “dormant artistic aspirations” line work.

@Sara OMG, I misread it as Nathan reawakening Rachel’s aspirations, I guess because that made more sense to me.

Not only is the first Stariel book free, but the rest are all available through Kindle Unlimited. They’re amazing, go read them!!

  11. Susan/DC says:

Since I live in Washington, DC, I know there is no “wealthy suburb of Oasis Springs”. Probably not fair, but I am mystified why the author didn’t set the book in one of the actual wealthy suburbs: Potomac, Great Falls, McLean, whatever. I employ a willing suspension of disbelief pretty much every time I read fiction, but for some reason this one bothers me, and I don’t understand why I have to start out believing in a make-believe place in a book that otherwise is supposedly based on somewhat realistic people and situations (although as others have pointed out, a 26 y.o. who already has “long dormant” aspirations is a bit of a stretch).

  12. Jill Q. says:

@Susan/DC, I’m also a DC person and I got nosy and got a sample of the book. Apparently the husband is the mayor of DC and he has aspirations for a Congressional seat (so a non-voting delegate like Eleanor Holmes Norton, I guess?) and then the White House.
It sounds like a pretty longshot idea for the presidency imho. Maybe the author is hearkening back Adrian Fenty, I know he made a national splash.
But yes, like you I’m very ‘hmm, I think this is not for me.’
It sounds kind of sexy and soapy, so maybe it will hit the spot for people who loved ‘Scandal.’
