  • A Natural History of Dragons

A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan

RECOMMENDED: A Natural History of Dragons by Marie Brennan is $3.99! This is the first book in the Lady Trent series, which Carrie really loves. Readers say the book is pretty awesome in terms of concept, but they surprisingly wanted more dragons. Have you read this book or series?

You, dear reader, continue at your own risk. It is not for the faint of heart—no more so than the study of dragons itself. But such study offers rewards beyond compare: to stand in a dragon’s presence, even for the briefest of moments—even at the risk of one’s life—is a delight that, once experienced, can never be forgotten. . . .

All the world, from Scirland to the farthest reaches of Eriga, know Isabella, Lady Trent, to be the world’s preeminent dragon naturalist. She is the remarkable woman who brought the study of dragons out of the misty shadows of myth and misunderstanding into the clear light of modern science. But before she became the illustrious figure we know today, there was a bookish young woman whose passion for learning, natural history, and, yes, dragons defied the stifling conventions of her day.

Here at last, in her own words, is the true story of a pioneering spirit who risked her reputation, her prospects, and her fragile flesh and bone to satisfy her scientific curiosity; of how she sought true love and happiness despite her lamentable eccentricities; and of her thrilling expedition to the perilous mountains of Vystrana, where she made the first of many historic discoveries that would change the world forever.

  • Rare Danger

    Rare Danger by Beverly Jenkins

Rare Danger by Beverly Jenkins is 99c! This one was featured on Hide Your Wallet and is a romantic suspense story with a librarian main character. Keep in mind that this one is a novella. I’m not sure about the page count, but the audiobook is around 3 and a half hours.

A librarian’s quiet life becomes a page-turner of adventure, romance, and murder in a thrilling novella by USA Today bestselling author Beverly Jenkins.

For Jasmine Ware, curating books for an exclusive clientele is her passion. Until an old friend, a dealer of rare books, goes missing and his partner is murdered. Linked to an artifact smuggled out of the ancient library at Timbuktu, the mystery draws Jasmine deeper into a plot that could cost her her life.

Air force veteran and private security ace Torr Noble is accustomed to adrenaline-pumping stakes. He never expected a private librarian would be so intriguing, but Jasmine is full of surprises. As the connection between them burns hot, a powerful old enemy raises his head. Torr and Jasmine must work together to find the missing dealer.

Will the search be the start of a happily ever after or a disastrous THE END?

  • Ten Rules for Faking It

Ten Rules for Faking It by Sophie Sullivan

Ten Rules for Faking It by Sophie Sullivan is $2.99! When a radio producer’s break up rant is accidentally live on the air, the station decides to launch a Bachelorette style contest, though the heroine may already be falling for her boss. It sounds like there’s a lot going on here. Have you read it?

What happens when your love life becomes the talk of the town?

As birthdays go, this year’s for radio producer Everly Dean hit rock-bottom.

Worse than the “tonsillectomy birthday.” Worse than the birthday her parents decided to split (the first time). But catching your boyfriend cheating on you with his assistant?

    Even clichés sting.

But this is Everly’s year! She won’t let her anxiety hold her back. She’ll pitch her podcast idea to her boss.

    There’s just one problem.

Her boss, Chris, is very cute. (Of course). Also, he’s extremely distant (which means he hates her, right? Or is that the anxiety talking)?

And, Stacey the DJ didn’t mute the mic during Everly’s rant about Simon the Snake (syn: Cheating Ex).

    That’s three problems.

Suddenly, people are lining up to date her, Bachelorette-style, fans are voting (Reminder: never leave house again), and her interest in Chris might be a two-way street. It’s a lot for a woman who could gold medal in people-avoidance. She’s going to have to fake it ‘till she makes it to get through all of this.

Perhaps she’ll make a list: The Ten Rules for Faking It.

Because sometimes making the rules can find you happiness when you least expect it.

  • Calico Palace

    Calico Palace by Gwen Bristow

RECOMMENDED: Calico Palace by Gwen Bristow is $2.99! This is an American historical, which Carrie loved. She gave it an A grade:

Beautiful. I adore this book with a couple of caveats that are pretty standard for the time period it’s describing (1848 – 1850) and the time period it was published in (1970, when the author was almost 70 years old). It’s fun, it’s by turns tearjerking and hilarious, it’s feminist, it’s romantic, and it describes a crazy time in history with a lot of excitement, some glamour, and a great deal of grit.

This thrilling story of the California gold rush is not about the forty-niners, the prospectors who came rushing to the San Francisco area in 1849, but about the men and women who were there when it all began with the first discovery of gold in 1848, when San Francisco was a village of 900 people. These were the people who went up to the hills and came back staggering under the weight of the treasure they carried, and who began transforming San Francisco from a shantytown into one of the most brilliant cities in the world.

This novel tells the unforgettable story of how these people walked into one of the most spectacular adventures in the world’s history. They saw the first samples of gold brought to the quartermaster, who said they were flakes of yellow mica. They were there when the first people who saw the gold were laughed at and called “crackbrains.” And they laid the foundation of the golden empire before the first forty-niners got there. Some of them could not meet the demands of this strange new world; others grew stronger and shared the greatness of the country they had helped build. Calico Palace is their story brought to vivid life.

  1. Emily B says:

The Sophie Sullivan is very sweet but a bit forgettable. It’s definitely closed door – if I remember correctly there’s barely any kissing. Definitely an instance where the cutesy illustrated covers match the tone of the book – no surprise sexy times here. I’ve read the follow ups in the series (all can be read as standalones) and feel pretty much the same about all of them. The characters feel maybe a bit immature for their ages and the work situations are a bit less than believable, but overall not a bad way to spend an afternoon.

  2. Msb says:

The Lady Trent series is great. Each book surpasses its predecessors. My favorites are the last 2: Within the Sanctuary of Wings and Turning Darkness into Light. Great combo of what it’s like to be a scientist, feminism (what it’s like to be a woman scientist in patriarchy) and anticolonialism. Fun and thrilling to read, too.
