  • The Rose

    The Rose by Tiffany Reisz

The Rose by Tiffany Reisz is $2.99! This is book two in The Godwicks series which is a mix of contemporary, fantasy, and erotic romance. The first book, The Red, was favorable reviewed here. I don’t think they need to be read in order, but correct me if I’m wrong.

Author Tiffany Reisz returns to the world of The Red with an imaginative sequel full of lust and magic, and the dangers unleashed when the two are combined…

On the day of Lia’s university graduation party, her parents—wealthy art collectors with friends in high places—gift her a beautiful wine cup, a rare artifact decorated with roses. It’s a stunning gift, and one that August Bowman, a friend of her parents and a guest at Lia’s party, also has his eye on. The cup, August tells her, is known as the Rose kylix, and it’s no ordinary cup. It was used in the temple ceremonies of Eros, Greek god of erotic love, and has the power to bring the most intimate sexual fantasies to life.

But Lia is skeptical of August’s claims of the cup’s mythology and magic—after all, he’s a collector himself, and she suspects he just wants to get his hands on this impressive piece of art. So he dares her to try it for herself, and when Lia drinks from the Rose kylix she is suddenly immersed in an erotic myth so vivid it seems real—as though she’s living out the most sensual fantasy with August by her side…

Realizing the true power of this ancient and dangerous relic, Lia is even more wary of giving it up, though August insists it is only safe with him. He’s willing to pay the full value of the cup, but Lia has another type of trade in mind. One that finds them more tangled up in each other—and in fantasy—than either was prepared for.

  • Boyfriend Material

    Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

RECOMMENDED: Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall is $2.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

I thought this book was lovely. It had real depth. There were characters who made me angry. Sometimes those characters were truly awful people and sometimes they were good people who made mistakes (hello, Luc, you mess). Sometimes the book made me sad. Mostly, it made me swoon and laugh in equal measure – a great stress read!

    Wanted:
    One (fake) boyfriend
    Practically perfect in every way

Luc O’Donnell is tangentially–and reluctantly–famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.

To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.

But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that’s when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don’t ever want to let them go.

  • The Wicked & the Dead

The Wicked & the Dead by Melissa Marr

The Wicked & the Dead by Melissa Marr is $2.49! This is book one in a new urban fantasy series by Marr, who previously wrote more young adult titles. My ears perk up whenever fae are involved. Have you read this one?

Enter a new faery world written by the author of the internationally bestselling Wicked Lovely series…for readers of Patricia Briggs, Chloe Neill, and Jeaniene Frost.

Half witch, half killer, wholly unpreparedly for a Faery Bargain…Geneviève Crowe makes her living beheading the dead in near-future New Orleans.

But now, her magic’s gone sideways, and the only person strong enough to help her is the one man who could tempt her to think about picket fences: Eli Stonecroft, a faery bar-owner in New Orleans.

When human businessmen start turning up as draugar, both the queen of the again-walkers and the wealthy son of one of the victims, hire Geneviève to figure it out. She works to keep her magic in check, the dead from crawling out of their graves, and enough money for a future that might be a lot longer than she’d like. Neither her heart nor her life are safe now that she’s juggling a faery, murder, and magic.

  • The Mister

    The Mister by E.L. James

The Mister by E.L. James is $2.99! I remember when this first came out, I thought this was a historical romance. People I know who have read this one say it’s kind of a repackaging of Fifty Shades. But hey, I’m not judging if you’re curious or wanted to wait for this one to drop in price.

The passionate new romance from E L James, author of the phenomenal #1 bestselling Fifty Shades Trilogy

London, 2019. Life has been easy for Maxim Trevelyan. With his good looks, aristocratic connections, and money, he’s never had to work and he’s rarely slept alone. But all that changes when tragedy strikes and Maxim inherits his family’s noble title, wealth, and estates, and all the responsibility that entails. It’s a role he’s not prepared for and one that he struggles to face.

But his biggest challenge is fighting his desire for an unexpected, enigmatic young woman who’s recently arrived in England, possessing little more than a dangerous and troublesome past.  Reticent, beautiful, and musically gifted, she’s an alluring mystery, and Maxim’s longing for her deepens into a passion that he’s never experienced and dares not name. Just who is Alessia Demachi? Can Maxim protect her from the malevolence that threatens her? And what will she do when she learns that he’s been hiding secrets of his own?

From the heart of London through wild, rural Cornwall to the bleak, forbidding beauty of the Balkans, The Mister is a roller-coaster ride of danger and desire that leaves the reader breathless to the very last page.

  1. chacha1 says:

I wish I hadn’t already read ‘Boyfriend Material’ a bunch of times so I could read it for the first time again. 🙂 Will be re-reading soon to be fully primed for the sequel.

  2. cleo says:

Alexis Hall is hit or miss for me but I really enjoyed Boyfriend Material.

It’s like a Hugh Grant rom-com but queer. With a not completely white supporting cast. And more snark. The heat level is pretty low, iirc.

  3. Zoe says:

You don’t need to read The Red before The Rose. It’ll give you way more context for what’s going on if you do though. The heroine in The Rose is the daughter of the couple from The Red.

  4. Kit says:

The Mister:if you can get over the fact that the MC sleeps with his brother’s widow TWO days after the funeral, constant changing from 1st to 3rd pov (several times in a chapter) and some problematic eastern European stereotypes, then maybe this is the book for you? Me? I found it a total snoozefest, DNF’ed it. At least I got a library copy though.

  5. kkw says:

Alexis Hall is also super hit or miss for me, and I also adored this one, and eagerly await the sequel. I was entirely contented with the happy ending and thus did not expect more, but am delighted to spend more time with the characters!
The Melissa Marr otoh appears to be one of a number of UF books I liked fine and have zero recollection of ever reading.

  6. Penny says:

Agree with chacha1, cleo, and kkw – Boyfriend Material is very good and also the audiobook is A++

Funny story about the heat level – it is indeed very low. I gave my sister the audiobook because she listens to audiobooks on her commute, doing household stuff etc. She does not read much romance, more sci-fi and nonfiction stuff. But she really liked it and bought Something Fabulous – apparently the much higher heat level had her blushing in the car (I haven’t read it yet so not sure how her definition of high heat compared to mine lol).

  7. DonnaMarie says:

@Kit, so you’re saying she still hasn’t learned how to write?

  8. Kit says:

@DonnaMarie she should stick to rehashing FSOG. I’m sure she could do one from the Ana’s subconscious point of view!

  9. EJ says:

The Red is about the mother of the heroine of The Rose. I don’t think reading them in order matters, though, because despite having interesting plots they are more on the erotic side of erotic romance.

  10. hng23 says:

I have THE RED, so I suppose it’s time for me to pull THE ROSE off the tbr shelf, read it & then hunt down a copy of THE PEARL (3rd in the series, not the Victorian porn collection).

  11. Lauren says:

The Melissa Marr is showing up as 5.99 me at B&N (my preferred retailer), but does seem to be 2.49 at Amazon still.

  12. Laura says:

@hng23 I want to hear about this Victorian porn collection! And can we just pause for a minute and sigh over the cover of The Rose…

  13. hng23 says:

@Laura: THE PEARL was an English underground magazine that billed itself as ‘A Journal of Voluptuous Reading’. It published sixteen issues from 1879-1881, when it was shut down for obscenity. You can read the complete text here:
    https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Pearl

  14. cleo says:

@Penny – that is funny! I’ve read both – iirc, Something Fabulous doesn’t have that many sex scenes but they are somewhat explicit. They didn’t make me blush reading them but they might be a bit much to hear read out loud.

One of the MCs is very sexually experienced and the other is a virgin and is also demi-sexual. Before he fell for is LI, he never really thought about sex and he is very interested in learning EVERYTHING about sex and what his lover likes. Lots of licking in intimate places.

  15. Penny says:

@cleo-ha! I started listening to a lot more audiobooks lately because I’m finding it hard to actually focus on reading pretty much anything longer than, well, a books on sale post… and it’s been… different, hearing some of them out loud! I also have a tendency to skim if I find a sex scene boring, so re-reading (listening?) some comfort reads that I loved for the story more than the way the sexy bits were written I’m discovering that actually I was unfairly skimming for the most part, and that I was missing some important character stuff too. Aaaanyway, I really need to get around to Something Fabulous soon!
