Historical Romance from Vanessa Kelly, Kate Noble, and Eloisa James

  • The Game and the Governess

The Game and the Governess by Kate Noble

RECOMMENDED: The Game and the Governess by Kate Noble is $1.99 right now. I am a big fan of Noble’s writing, whether it’s The Librarians or The Lizzie Bennet Diaries or historical romance. I reviewed this book back when it came out and gave it a B-. It’s not my favorite of Noble’s books, but it’s as thoughtful and as memorable:

The Game and the Governess is a thoughtful, intricate novel that deals very heavily with privilege, especially the privilege of the hero. The description that’s part of the cover copy says it best, I think: Trading Places meets Pride and Prejudice.

    That’s pretty accurate.”

Trading Places meets Pride and Prejudice in this sexy, saucy romance—first in a new series from the author of YouTube sensation The Lizzie Bennet Diaries.

Three friends. One Wager. Winner takes all.

The Earl—‘Lucky Ned’ Ashby. Pompous, preening, certain that he is beloved by everyone.
The Miller—John Turner. Proud, forced to work as the Earl’s secretary, their relationship growing ever more strained.
The Doctor—Rhys Gray. Practical, peace-loving, but caught in the middle of two warring friends.

Their wager is simple: By trading places with John Turner and convincing someone to fall in love with him, Ned plans to prove it’s him the world adores, not his money. Turner plans to prove him wrong.

But no one planned on Phoebe Baker, the unassuming governess who would fall into their trap, and turn everything on its head…

  • Confessions of a Royal Bridegroom

Confessions of a Royal Bridegroom by Vanessa Kelly

Confessions of a Royal Bridegroom by Vanessa Kelly is $2.99 at some vendors right now. This is the second book in her Renegade Royals series, and has a 3.9-star average. Book 1, Secrets of Seducing a Royal Bodyguard, was on sale earlier last year, so you may already own it.

It’s a mix of mystery and adventure: the hero and heroine are brought together because a mysterious infant is delivered to the hero, with a note that the baby’s life is in danger, and the heroine is sent to serve as the baby’s nurse, while also secretly protecting him.

They are the Renegade Royals, illegitimate sons of the Royal Princes, each finding his rightful place in society–and the woman destined to be his perfect match. . .

Some men are born into scandal. Others pursue it with a passion. Griffin Steele, secret son of the Duke of Cumberland, is guilty on both counts. Yet somehow London’s most notorious scoundrel has been saddled with an abandoned baby boy–and with the unflappable, intriguing spinster summoned to nurse him. . .

Justine Brightmore may be a viscount’s niece, but she’s also a spy’s daughter, determined to safeguard the infant when his suspected royal parentage makes him a target. Yet how to protect herself from the rakish Griffin? Marriage might shield her reputation, but it can only imperil her heart, especially with a groom intent on delicious seduction. . .

  • A Kiss at Midnight

A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James

A Kiss at Midnight by Eloisa James is $2.99 at Amazon and Google:Play. This is the first book in the Fairy Tale series, and it has a 3.8-star average.

This book was nominated for a RITA in 2011, and our RITA Reader Challenge reviewer, Jayne, gave it an A-, saying, “I thought this was wonderful. If you’re looking for historical accuracy and nail-biting tension, look elsewhere. If you’re looking for froth, sparkles, castles, ballgowns, elaborate wigs, and glass slippers (oh, and the glass slippers are SO wonderful), this is perfect. I savored every page. By the time Gabriel and Kate ride off into the sunset, I believed that they loved and deserved each other and all that was left was a contented sigh from me.”

Miss Kate Daltry doesn’t believe in fairy tales . . . or happily ever after.

Forced by her stepmother to attend a ball, Kate meets a prince . . . and decides he’s anything but charming. A clash of wits and wills ensues, but they both know their irresistible attraction will lead nowhere. For Gabriel is promised to another woman—a princess whose hand in marriage will fulfill his ruthless ambitions.

Gabriel likes his fiancée, which is a welcome turn of events, but he doesn’t love her. Obviously, he should be wooing his bride-to-be, not the witty, impoverished beauty who refuses to fawn over him.

Godmothers and glass slippers notwithstanding, this is one fairy tale in which destiny conspires to destroy any chance that Kate and Gabriel might have a happily ever after.

Unless a prince throws away everything that makes him noble . . .

Unless a dowry of an unruly heart trumps a fortune . . .

Unless one kiss at the stroke of midnight changes everything.

There are a bunch of random Terry Pratchett novels for $3.99 today . I have all the paperbacks, but I’m very happy to add ebooks at this price.

I second the recommendation for KJ Charles’ The Magpie Lord. Can’t recommend it enough at that price. Really excellent read for UF/ PNR fans – the romance is a tad understated and the final battle against the bad guys is pretty gruesome, but it’s so, so good. AU Victorian England with magic.

(Confidential to CarrieS – if you haven’t read it yet, I think it’s up your alley.)
