CW for discussions of sexual assault. Happy Bachelorette Day! I just finished watching a movie where Chris Pratt is a science teacher who time travels to the future to stop an alien apocalypse, and yet somehow I expect tonight’s episode will be worse than that. At least the Worst Chris movie had JK Simmons in it. We open up with Tayshia telling the dudes that Blake will be joining the house. When Blake shows up, … Continue reading Elyse Watches The Bachelorette–S17 E5: A Different Type of Bro Code →

CW: discussion of depression I’ve recently been through a lot, medically-speaking. I have a very rare disease called idiopathic subglottic stenosis. Basically, my airway grows closed with scar tissue for no known reason. I have had multiple surgeries to open up my airway again. The impact of the diagnosis and the surgeries has been emotional as much as it has been physical, so much so that I found myself in a very depressed, very hopeless … Continue reading Reading and Recovery →

The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren is $2.99! This is the duo’s latest romance and if you didn’t want to grab it in hardcover, this is a great price. I’m a huge fan of these authors, though I haven’t gotten around to starting this one yet. Have you read it?

Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

This HaBO comes from Gloriamarie, who wants to find this time traveling book: This is actually a series of books involving a time-traveling heroine who is part of a scientific community. This is not the St. Mary’s series or a Connie Willis book. I found this series on the Ladies of Lallybroch reading list of other time-travel romances and I checked then out of the library. The main character enters some sort of tunnel and … Continue reading HaBO: Heroine Time Travels with Aspirin →

RECOMMENDED: Rosaline Palmer Takes the Cake by Alexis Hall is $2.99! Carrie and I jointly reviewed this one and agreed on a B+. As a bisexual woman, I definitely felt seen by this book and I’m here for all the 2021 summer baking romance reads.

The Ice Swan is a slow-burn and rather tender romance about two people building a relationship after their worlds have crumbled around them. It is set in the Russian emigré community in Paris during the final months of the Great War, and then in rural Scotland in the War’s aftermath, and it manages to be both angsty and gentle. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Princess Svetlana Dalsky fled the Bolshevik uprising in Russia with her mother … Continue reading The Ice Swan by J’nell Ciesielski →

Welcome back to Cover Awe, where we talk about book covers that grab out attention in all the right ways! Amanda: The color palette of this cover is really speaking to me. Elyse: I love the blue magical light coming from her hand. I also have a feeling that a certain subset of people born in our age range will always be subconsciously drawn to fuchsia, bright purple and teal thanks to Lisa Frank. Amanda: … Continue reading Cover Awe: Lisa Frank Vibes →

Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and I believe came out earlier this year. Thorne’s debut was much-loved, though her follow up was meh for most of us. I thought someone on the site reviewed this one, but I think I’m wrong.

Content Warning: PTSD, violence and trauma I read this book at such a furious pace that I’m sure I missed the details. In fact, I know I did. Because I’m struggling to write this review beyond simply repeating “wow” to myself ad infinitum. There was such a wonderful balance between a strong character-driven development and sheer plot momentum that I couldn’t control myself. I just had to devour this book. Did I ignore all of … Continue reading Rare Vigilance by M.A. Grant →

Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha is $2.99! Sneezy reviewed this one and gave it a B:
Despite my confusion regarding some of the worldbuilding, the characters and their relationships are developed beautifully, and the entire story thrummed with the sort of vitality that you can only get from a post-apocalyptic road trip with suped-up BAMFs. I can’t rave enough about the emotional literacy this book is built on, which I find incredibly catnippy.

A recent Rec League on tortured love spawned a SBTB discussion about Asian dramas, which often have lots of pining in their romantic arcs. Not all of these are romances, but Shana and I really want to geek out about Asian dramas and hear about your recommendations too! We’ve done a few guest reviews and suggestion posts previously, but we’d love some newer options! Most, if not all of these, are available through Viki to watch. … Continue reading Stuff You Should Be Watching: Asian Dramas →
