HaBO: Yachts & More Pearls

This HaBO comes from Christine, who is looking for a romantic suspense novel: Hey there! So I am feeling like this was a series of contemporary romantic suspense books that I read about 15 years ago. T he books had connecting characters (brothers, I think). There was quite a bit of sailing/yachts in the first book. The hero was kind of a jerk. The heroine’s first name started with a T (Tallulah? Tabitha?) and she … Continue reading HaBO: Yachts & More Pearls

Cover Snark: No Fires in the Library, Please

Shadow Beast Shifters Rejected by Jaymin Eve. A man and woman are both on fire in a study or library. She is wrapped around him, legs around his waist and his arms are outstretched to the sides.

Happy Cover Snark Monday! From Dee: His arms and whatever happened to his hands is scary enough but if you only look at the thumbnails, you wonder where her second arm went. I’m also not sure if he’s a vampire or just sniffing her hair in a REALLY creepy way. Enjoy. Amanda: Look ma, no hands. Sarah: Wheeeeeeee! Also, if you’re going to flaming firebang, go for it, but maybe not near so many books? … Continue reading Cover Snark: No Fires in the Library, Please

Lightning Reviews: Cat Sebastian and a Contemporary Thriller

Hey all! We’re here with some Lightning Reviews. If you’re unfamiliar, these are quick reviews, usually around 500 words or less. We try to run two or three at a time. It’s kinda fun to see how different how reviewers’ tastes are, especially when we group their reviews together. This time, we have Cat Sebastian’s latest romance and a new thriller!

The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

The Last Thing He Told Me

I am writing this while sleep deprived, guzzling a cold brew, having stayed up all night reading. At some point I remember my husband telling me he was going to bed and me telling him I’d be right up. The next time I looked up I had finished The Last Thing He Told Me and, aside from my reading light, the house was pitch dark. The Last Thing He Told Me is an excellently plotted … Continue reading The Last Thing He Told Me by Laura Dave

Books on Sale: The Princess Knight by G.A. Aiken & More

The Princess Knight by G.A. Aiken is $2.99! This is book two in the Scarred Earth SagaI loved and reviewed the first book and Lara reviewed this one, giving it a B:

The cast of characters EXPLODES in this book. Pay attention to each and every new character; they are all important. We pop into a lot of different POVs which can be a little dizzying, but adds beautifully to the immersive world building of it all.

Whatcha Reading? June 2021, Part Two

Scenic summer sunset view of Nyhavn pier with color buildings, ships, yachts and other boats in the Old Town of Copenhagen, Denmark

It’s Whatcha Reading time! This is where we get to talk about what we’ve been reading, whether it was a good reading month, a slow one, or just plain terrible. It’s also a post that is terribly bad for all of our wallets. Carrie: I am reading A Most Remarkable Creature: The Hidden Life and Epic Journey of the World’s Smartest Birds of Prey by Jonathan Meiburg. As a result I have a new animal … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? June 2021, Part Two

Books on Sale: Sunshine by Robin McKinley & More

Sunshine by Robin McKinley is $1.99! McKinley has been recommended several times at SBTB HQ. Some readers label this as young adult and, for the most part, I’d agree with that sentiment. According to reviews on Goodreads, there were complaints about the balance of narrative to action, but many loved this different take on the vampire story. I know many of you have read this one, so let us know in the comments whether you loved it or hated it!

463. Women and Poison in History with Mikki Kendall

Today, we’re going to talk about food safety law, and the history of women who probably poisoned their husbands. Allegedly. Mikki Kendall, on Twitter as @Karnythia and the author of Hood Feminism, is an eager historian into the mysteries of what women got away with, and so we cover poison clusters, dying of fever, and the poisons hanging out in your back yard. This conversation was inspired by two Twitter threads, and I’ll link to … Continue reading 463. Women and Poison in History with Mikki Kendall
