During the fight for women’s suffrage in California, the support of Latinx voters was essential. Maria Guadalupe Evangelina Lopez fought for suffrage, taught at the high school and university level, flew an airplane, and was an ambulance driver in WWI. She was the first (confirmed) Latina to teach at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and, as of 1902, their youngest professor. She was also the first person in The United States of America … Continue reading Kickass Women in History: Maria Guadalupe Evangelina Lopez
It’s April and time for our first Whatcha Reading of the month! I’m personally pretty deep into a slump and that’s okay! I’m trying not to focus too much on what I think I should be doing. Instead, I want to listen to my brain and body on what they’d like to do in this weird time. So far, it’s play Animal Crossing: New Horizons and eat a bunch of string cheese. Lara: I’m on a … Continue reading Whatcha Reading? April 2020 Edition, Part One
Luna and the Lie by Mariana Zapata is 99c at Amazon! She is an auto-buy author for many who love a slow burn romances and her books are pretty long. This one seems to clock out at 600+ pages. I’m personally iffy on Zapata’s books as the two I tried had some major slut shaming. Should I give them another chance?
Several members of the Frolic Podcast Network have gathered for group mayhem and silliness for your collective amusement! Laura von Holt from The Mermaid Podcast had the idea to do a group gathering of mayhem and merriment, so in this episode, we have me, Laura, Kelly from Boobies & Noobies, and Kelsey and Zoë from Tea & Strumpets. We get very silly and invite you to join us. We forget to introduce ourselves. We tell … Continue reading 400. A Four Podcast Crossover with Mayhem and Jokes
When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton is $1.99! This one features a character from the first book in this series, Next Year in Havana, but I believe you can manage this one as a standalone. If I’m wrong, though, chime in below! Here’s what Sarah had to say:
When We Left Cuba is beautiful and fascinating. Better recommendation comes from my house sitter earlier this year who very timidly asked if she could read my ARC of book three because she loves the series so so much and was so excited that a preview copy was in her vicinity.
I’m a huge Grady Hendrix fan (see my reviews of Horrorstor, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, and the amazingly excellent We Sold Our Souls). This book was so much more intense than I thought it would be, and there’s so much to unpack that it’s a tough one to grade. Truthfully, if I had known what I was getting into, I doubt I would have read this book. And yet I’m so glad I did, because … Continue reading The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix
Desperate times call for feel-good romance novels. To Have and To Hoax is just what the doctor ordered: a gulp of serotonin disguised as a Regency romp. It isn’t a permanent escape from stress and fear, but hopefully it’ll help you forget your troubles for a few hours. It certainly did so for me. Lord and Lady James Audley began their first year of marriage as besotted lovers. They ended their first year of marriage … Continue reading To Have and to Hoax by Martha Waters
It’s Links time already! Yesterday, I had my bi-weekly therapy session via phone. Have I discussed how weird it is to do therapy over the phone? So far, that’s the strangest change to my personal routine. Yes, there is a cam option but no one wants to see my quarantine fashion right now. Links today are mostly book recommendations and links, plus a couple good videos to keep you busy. … If you’re having trouble … Continue reading Links: Free Reads and YouTube Vids
A Wicked Kind of Husband by Mia Vincy is 99c at Amazon! It’s available elsewhere, but at $3.99! This features a married couple who wed out of convenience living two separate lives until they are forced back into each other’s proximity. I’ve heard really good things about this book and for a time, it was recommended a lot on social media.
This HaBO request is from Jillian, who is looking for this historical romance: Here is what I know: (I was a teen when I read this book so most of what I remember is about the sex) – It is a historical romance that I read in the early 2000s, but based on the content and style my guess is it was published in the 80s or early 90s. – The two main locations I … Continue reading HaBO: Eggplant Emoji
