RECOMMENDED: Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots is $1.99! Sarah reviewed this one and gave it an A:
In reading and then re-reading this book, I’ve discovered so many more layers, hidden parallels, and very clever dissections of the fictional world of the characters and of the actual reality that this book resides within. Hench is delicious in its anger and ferocity, chilling in its deadpan snark and arctic clarity of analysis and assessment, and meticulous in its nuance. It’s a villainously wonderful good time.

This book retells the Percival legend from the King Arthur mythos as a feminist queer fantasy story set in sixth-century Britain with elements of Welsh mythology. Nicola Griffith is known for her meticulous research, as seen in her novel Hild as well as in this story. This research lends Spear a grounded feel that … Continue reading Spear by Nicola Griffith →

RECOMMENDED: A Mask of Mirrors by M.A. Carrick is $2.99! M.A. Carrick is the name for the writing duo of Marie Brennan and Alyc Helms. Carrie wrote a Lightning Review of this one and gave it a B+:
Readers who like political scheming, fashion as a weapon and a tool, secrets, and swashbuckling will enjoy this, and as a special treat for Tarot fans the characters have their own form of cartomancy which is described in detail in the book.

It’s our second Whatcha Reading of the month, which means that April is nearly over! Let’s talk about some things we’ve been reading (or not!). Elyse: I scored an advanced copy of It Girl by Ruth Ware so I started it the moment it hit my Kindle.
