RECOMMENDED: The Hollow of Fear by Sherry Thomas is $1.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is the third book the Lady Sherlock series, which probably needs to be read in order. Sarah gave it a B+:
I will keep recommending this series, as it is so layered with opportunities to examine it. It can be read as a mystery, as a historical novel with found family, as an examination of sexism and societal limitations on women, and how those limitations are subverted in acceptable and unacceptable ways, or as a study of those outside the boundaries of high society and how they survive with disguises built of behavior.

RECOMMENDED: When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare is $3.99! Elyse loved this book so much and gave it an A:
Everything about When a Scot Ties the Knot by Tessa Dare worked for me. Everything. Bust out the squee mop, y’all because this review is just going to be a flappy-hands Good Book Noise® mess.
Things this book has:
1. A sexy Scot hero I pictured as Sam Heughan.
2. A heroine who is a naturalist and illustrator.
3. Tons of UST.
4. A completely crazy sauce plot that Dare pulls off flawlessly.
5. A missing lobster.

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher
Take the horror elements from T. Kingfisher’s novel The Hollow Places and combine them with the character dynamics and gentle, slow-burn romance of the Paladin series and you get Nettle and Bone, a fairy tale in which a princess enlists the help of a witch, a warrior, and an evil godmother in her efforts to kill a prince. I ate this book up to the detriment of several other things that I was supposed to … Continue reading Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

Happy Wednesday! Is anyone else ready for this week to be over? I’m already exhausted from it. Also thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes and happy belated birthday to those who celebrated their own! We’re warming up here in New England and I already miss the fall weather. I feel like spring is probably the hardest for me to dress for in terms of managing layers and rainy weather. I also look much … Continue reading Links: Podcasts, Kickstarters, & More

The Witch’s Heart by Genevieve Gornichec is $1.99! Carrie gave this one an A:
I was constantly surprised – sometimes delighted by a surprising event and sometimes heartbroken. The prose was stunning and the protagonist someone I wanted to spend all my time with.
Lightning Review
The Birds of California by Katie Cotugno
The Birds of California is a celebrity romance which is totally my jam, but there was a big problem with the book’s ending. Specifically we learn about a trauma the heroine has survived at the very end of the novel, which gave me as a reader no time to process that trauma (even if the heroine already had). There’s no way to review this without being spoilery, so I’ve put more specifics in the spoiler … Continue reading The Birds of California by Katie Cotugno

RECOMMENDED: The Return by Rachel Harrison is $2.99! Carrie gave this spooky book a B+:
This a scary story because scary things happen (chases and gore and jump scares, oh my!) but it’s a powerful story because it’s really about friendship, truth, and grief. There’s so much powerful emotional and universal truth behind the body horror, and so much woven in commentary on everything from how patriarchy damages women, to how women bond for survival even as they judge one another, to how our college selves change after college ends.

HaBO: Historical Where She Fakes Her Own Death
This HaBO comes from Laura, who is looking for this historical romance: I recently (a year ago maybe?) read a book. It was part of a series and I completely lost the name or author. This is what I remember: It is a Regency romance. The heroine fakes her death to escape from her abusive husband (an old lady helps her) and then she creates a group of people that help other abused women escape. … Continue reading HaBO: Historical Where She Fakes Her Own Death
