RECOMMENDED: First Grave on the Right is the first book in Darynda Jones’ Charley Davidson series, and it’s $2.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Here’s what Sarah had to say:
When I’ve been at conferences with Jones, readers and authors come up to her and tell her how much they love this series. This book won the Golden Heart in 2009, and the RITA for Best First Book in 2012. The heroine, Charley, is terrific. I listened to the audiobook performance by Lorelei King (after buying the Kindle copy on sale I was offered a discounted audio copy) and it was really good. I didn’t want to stop walking the dogs, that’s for sure.
This HaBO request is from Tee, who’s searching for a holiday romance: So this was my first romance, stolen from my mother. It was a Harlequin about a woman and a man both going home for Christmas, but when they get to the airport, the weather is so bad that the flight is cancelled. It’s a couple days before Christmas and there is a blizzard. They both race to the rental car counter but surprise! … Continue reading HaBO: There’s Only One Rental Car Left→
I should have been able to read A Duke in Shining Armor in a day. Instead, it took me a week. And do you know why? Because I purposely kept putting it down once I realized that eventually I would RUN OUT OF BOOK. How DARE this book be over? How DARE it be so incredibly perfect and constructed almost completely of Carrie Bait? It has a book collector. It has a heroine with glasses. … Continue reading A Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase→
The Fifth Season is also a relatively quick read. It opens with a cataclysmic disaster and doesn’t slow down its pace. Its characters travel widely. My only word of warning is that the book ends on a massive cliffhanger. Fortunately the sequel, The Obelisk Gate, will be released in August. After finishing this book I’m making desperate grabby hands for the next one.
If you like immersive, action-driven fantasy and if you want a fantasy world that’s not Euro-centric–or if you just love a really, really good story–I cannot recommend The Fifth Season enough.

It’s that time of year again, when crafters have a few scant weeks until the holidays. Fueled by coffee, Netflix and bitter, bitter tears we knit and crochet into the night, desperate to finish last minute gifts. We bind off on the 23rd of December. Fuck weaving in ends. People can weave in their own goddamn ends. Not like I’m speaking from experience. Determined to still get a project or two complete before the holidays … Continue reading Stuff You Should Be Knitting: OMG It’s Almost December→
Has it been two weeks already? Did the American Bitchery survive the Thanksgiving holiday? You could probably use some Cover Snark. Redheadedgirl: I have a few questions, all related to sword construction. The hilt of this sword is clearly not long enough or thick enough. It’ll just fly out his hand. It also means that the balance is all tip heavy which will make the sword hard to control. ALSO I don’t think the sword … Continue reading Cover Snark: Please, Ma’am. Not on the Exercise Mats→
RECOMMENDED: Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas is $1.99 at Amazon! So many readers were looking forward to this book when it first released, and Carrie gave it a B+:
Devil in Spring was so delightful that I read it slowly because I had to take frequent squee breaks. I truly cannot sufficiently express how overjoyed this book made me. That said, I don’t think it will be everyone’s catnip, because the main character sometimes seems overly young and naïve, even given her character quirks.

Carrie: This came just in time as I have a cold and am supposed to sit on the couch. Now can I sit on the couch and growl “I’m WORKING” at passers by. But I’m also super cranky so I should feel more sympathy for poor Iris and Amanda instead of wanting to throw kleenex at them. Elyse: I’m probably viewing this through my own professional lens, but I have a hard time believing that … Continue reading Smart Bitches Movie Matinee: The Holiday→
