When Elyse and I heard about a horror novel with bloodthirsty mermaids, our wonder twin powers activated like never before. Yes, that’s right: killer mermaids. The majority of the book takes place in the near future in 2022. Seven years prior, Imagine Entertainment (think another Syfy Channel) bankrolled a “mockumentary” out to the Mariana Trench. The ship contained journalists, researchers, and the like to investigate whether mermaids were real. The ship was found abandoned with … Continue reading Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant →

This HaBO comes from Brooke, who wants to find a particular historical romance: After bingeing a certain show involving a certain much-anticipated twenty-years-later reunion, I got to thinking about powerful reunions in romance novels. I keep thinking of a romance where the heroine leaves for some reason, but eventually comes back to the hero. He thinks he must have gone mad because he’s used to thinking/dreaming about her while knowing she’ll never return. When he … Continue reading HaBO: Historical Heroine Must Prove She’s Real →

The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky is $2.99! This is the first book in the Olympus Unbound. Sarah gave the first book a B grade. I highly recommend reading Sarah’s review to get a full sense of whether this book may be for you.
When I started reading it, I had a really difficult time putting it down. The world building made for addictive reading, even when I was reading things I usually don’t read.

It’s that time of week when I watch The Bachelor and recap it so you don’t have to put this stuff in your eyeballs. I’d like to point out that after close scrutiny of Arie, I’ve come to the conclusion that this man is dead inside. I mean, look at those eyes. There’s nothing in there. He’ll be happy to let the ABC producers pick this season’s winner because after Emily rejected his Feelings Journal, he’s … Continue reading Elyse Watches The Bachelor–Episode 2: Grandpa Cardigan →
Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

This HaBO is from Anonymous, who probably has one of the most incredible HaBO requests we’ve had in a while: I read this when I was in middle school in the early nineties, and I think it was probably YA? All I get when I Google for it are various Christmas things and that Blitzen shifter romance, and it’s definitely not any of those. It was set somewhere like the Arctic Circle, with a sort … Continue reading HaBO: Magic Reindeer Baby →

Behind a Lady’s Smile by Jane Goodger is 99c! I’m completely in love with this cover. I’m also not a huge historical romance reader, but the description has me considering a purchase. If you’re on the fence about this book, here’s a Goodreads review that made my morning:
Crass language and explicit scenes make this book, and author, a no-go for me. I prefer the regency/western genres to be clean and perchance a bit more romanticized. Gentlemen should be just that, gentlemen. And the women should be ladies worth waiting for. Nothing wrong with embracing chivalry and good old fashioned morals.

It’s Cover Snark time! For new readers, this is where we scratch our heads and try to make sense of some rather…interesting cover designs. From this tweet. Amanda: Is she frozen? Redheadedgirl: Sarah: …or this past week’s weather report. Elyse: The dude on the left looks like his face is stuck to hers. Like that kid from a Christmas Story. CarrieS: The guy who is looking at the reader doesn’t seem very into it. He … Continue reading Cover Snark: Camo in the Kitchen →

RECOMMENDED: The Duchess Deal by Tessa Dare is $1.99! This is part of a huge romance Kindle Daily Deal sale and it’s being price-matched as well. Other romances in the sale include books by Sarah MacLean, Elizabeth Hoyt, and Katee Robert. Elyse really loved this book and gave it an A grade:
I totally recommend reading The Duchess Deal, but preferably while sober so you can really appreciate all of it. It’s the perfect blend of two of my favorite fairytale tropes, it’s got a hero who never an alpha-hole, it’s funny, and it’s got female friendship. What more could you want?

I read this book on December 31, mostly while flying home from a family vacation. In some ways, it was exactly what I needed to read when I most needed to read it, and in other ways it was somewhat forgettable. I tried to explain to my husband over dinner what the book was about and why I’d enjoyed it, and I had a hard time describing the details. They’d flown out of my head. … Continue reading Braving the Wilderness by Brené Brown →

It’s our first book club selection of the new year and we’ve picked Death Below Stairs by Jennifer Ashley! Here’s the description: Victorian class lines are crossed when cook Kat Holloway is drawn into a murder that reaches all the way to the throne. Highly sought-after young cook Kat Holloway takes a position in a Mayfair … Continue reading Book Club January Selection: Death Below Stairs by Jennifer Ashley →
