Cover Snark: Paging Dr. Nips

Happy Monday! Or, if you prefer, Happy Cover Snark Day! I like the latter better, don’t you? From Elaine: This cover popped up on my Kindle (yeah, I get the ads, argh) and I’m just…well, I’m sure you get all sorts of WTF??? Cover Snark suggestions so I’ll just leave it to you to decide about a doctor, wearing some kind of not-scrubs pants, shirtless, a stethoscope draped over his very fit chest, and a…a … Continue reading Cover Snark: Paging Dr. Nips

Royals, a Historical Romance, & More

Books on Sale: The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert & More

The Princess Trap by Talia Hibbert is $2.99! This book just came out February 8 and I immediately one-clicked after seeing it on twitter. It’s a royal romance with a Black heroine and a fake relationship. I’m not a huge fan of smoking, but there’s something I really love about the cover. I think it’s the smug eyebrows. Content warning for scenes of abuse in the book.

February Movie Selection: Broadcast News (1987)

February is our first Movie Matinee month of 2018 and we’ve picked Broadcast News. If you haven’t seen it in a while or it’s your first time watching, here’s the synopsis: A highly strung news producer finds herself strangely attracted to a vapid anchorman even through she loathes everything he personifies. To make matters worse, her best friend, a talented but not particularly telegenic news reporter, is secretly in love with her. This pick was a … Continue reading February Movie Selection: Broadcast News (1987)

Kickass Women: Dr. Patricia Bath

Welcome back to Kickass Women! This month we are talking about Dr. Patricia Bath. If you’ve had cataracts, and you’ve had those cataracts treated, you can thank Dr. Bath for saving your eyesight. Patricia Bath, an ophthalmologist, was the first African-American female doctor to patent a medical invention. Her patent is for the Cataract Laserphaco Probe. This terrifyingly named device removes cataracts from people’s eyes. Dr. Bath owns five patents and also developed new strategies … Continue reading Kickass Women: Dr. Patricia Bath

Covers & Cocktails: Save a Horse

Is it cocktail time already? I swear, one of these days I’ll get the timing right and not wind up making a stiff drink at 11am on a Thursday. But today is not that day! We’re going a little rogue for this month’s cocktail! We’re celebrating the re-release of Wrapped and Strapped by Lorelei James. Some of my early erotica-reading days included James’ books. If you’re unfamiliar with her work, there are hot cowboys and … Continue reading Covers & Cocktails: Save a Horse

285. Labyrinth, Girl Scout Cookies, and Good Book Noise: An Interview with S. Jae-Jones

Amanda and I interview S. Jae-Jones, also known as JJ, about pretty much everything. Ready to learn? JJ was kind enough to answer all our nosy questions and our conversation was a LOT of fun. We cover a bunch of topics, including: How being an editorial assistant prepared her for a career as an author – and what secret knowledge (not really secret) she shares with fellow writers. How Labyrinth, Phantom of the Opera, the … Continue reading 285. Labyrinth, Girl Scout Cookies, and Good Book Noise: An Interview with S. Jae-Jones

Books on Sale: The Hot Shot by Kristen Callihan & More

The Hot Shot by Kristen Callihan is 99c at Amazon! What the heck price-matching! This is the fourth book in the Game On series. I, for one, love Callihan’s writing, and the previous book in the series, The Game Plan, is one of my favorites. However, reviewers say the second half of this one is full of lots of drama and angst.

Assassin’s Gambit by Amy Raby

Assassin’s Gambit

Assassin’s Gambit is a gritty yet glamorous story of seduction, espionage, intrigue, and romance. It has a brainy heroine, a hero with a wooden leg, some amazing clothes, magic, and many rounds of Caturanga, a game similar to chess. It also has a lot of violence, including graphic sexual violence, so readers beware. Trigger warning for rape, blackmail, and violence during sex. Lucien is the Kjallan emperor. He lost a leg in battle and struggles … Continue reading Assassin’s Gambit by Amy Raby

The Rec League: Historical Heroines in Their Thirties

The Rec League - heart shaped chocolate resting on the edge of a very old book

This Rec League comes from Taryn, who is looking for a specific age-range of heroines: I’m on the lookout for romances with heroines in their 30’s (or even late 20s), particularly historical romances, but also contemporary. I’ve read a number that I have loved (Mary Balogh, Elizabeth Hoyt, Lisa Kleypas, Sherry Thomas, etc…) but I’m always looking to add to my collection. I find that many historical romances have heroines who are in their teens … Continue reading The Rec League: Historical Heroines in Their Thirties
