Kickass Women: Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai (born Wangari Muta) was a kickass woman from Kenya who founded the Green Belt Movement. Her work brought together women’s rights, economic opportunity, and environmental stewardship and became a global movement. She won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. Maathai was born in 1940, in Kenya, which at that time was still a colony of Britain. She was educated in Kenya and in the United States. She was the first woman from East … Continue reading Kickass Women: Wangari Maathai

We’re Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True by Gabrielle Union

We’re Going to Need More Wine

I have a list of memoirs I want to read, and when this book became available, I dropped everything to read it. I’m so glad I did. I couldn’t put it down, even when it was way past my bedtime, even when the end of a chapter provided a good stopping point. I couldn’t stop making a list of people to recommend it to. I highlighted at least four lines per chapter, and I’m still … Continue reading We’re Going to Need More Wine: Stories That Are Funny, Complicated, and True by Gabrielle Union

Romance Wanderlust: La Casa de Estudillo

Romance Wanderlust - a yellowed and burnt edge map with a compass in the corner, with Romance Wanderlust written across it

On our last trip to San Diego, we were wandering around Old Town and purely by accident we ended up at the place in which a pivotal scene in Ramona, by Helen Hunt Jackson, takes place. You can’t actually stay there, but it’s a lovely spot to wander around in and I can personally vouch for the general area (Old Town San Diego) as a romantic place to spend time right around twilight, when it’s … Continue reading Romance Wanderlust: La Casa de Estudillo

Stuff You Should Be Watching: The Expanse

The Expanse TV poster. It shows an astronaut in space. It's holding onto the side of some ship and reaching toward the viewer.

When The Expanse first aired on the SyFy Channel (spell it correctly, you reprobates) Mr. Elyse was super excited because he was a fan of the books the show was based on. It took me a few episodes to get there, but this is now one of my favorite TV shows and I’m so excited for Season 3 to drop in April. The Expanse is a richly developed sci-fi world where political tensions have run high. … Continue reading Stuff You Should Be Watching: The Expanse

The Rec League: Gardening Romances

The Rec League - heart shaped chocolate resting on the edge of a very old book

We have a timely Spring-related Rec League request from Reader Jacquelyn: I was wondering if you could great spring romances, especially with a garden theme. A little witchy is great but since I largely prefer historical romance, I’m not looking for anything overwhelmingly supernatural (though I’m sure many others would love that, too). Amanda: GARDEN SPELLS GARDEN SPELLS GARDEN SPELLS! I wrote a Squee from the Keeper Shelf post on Garden Spells by Sarah Addison … Continue reading The Rec League: Gardening Romances

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.

We hope it gets better. … Every Wednesday, I ask Sarah if there’s something she wants me to include in the Links post. Most of the time, she doesn’t have anything. When I asked for this week, she cryptically replied, … Continue reading Lipstick, Rom Coms, & More

Books on Sale: A Summer for Scandal by Lydia San Andres & More

A Summer for Scandal by Lydia San Andres is $1.99! This is a historical romance set in the Caribbean with a heroine hiding her writing identity. One promising review said the feeling between the hero and heroine is very much like Mr. Darcy and Lizzie, but some said the plot execution could have used some work. It has a 3.8-star rating on Goodreads.

Actors in Audiobooks

After listening to Wanderlust by Lauren Blakely and fawning over it in a recent podcast (episode 292, in fact), we at SBTB HQ started discussing famous, recognizable voices in audiobooks. Sarah: Oh my god, Amanda. I listened to a sample of Richard Armitage reading Wanderlust. Jesus Christ. Amanda: RIGHT?! It’s a total ovary punch. Sarah: I think other people’s panties melted, too. JESUS, RICHARD Amanda: Has he spoken in French yet? Sarah: Yeah. Amanda: When Joy and Griffin … Continue reading Actors in Audiobooks
