Slightly Married by Mary Balogh is $2.99! This is the first book in the Bedwyn Saga, which is a favorite amongst romance readers. Though Balogh’s newer historicals haven’t really worked for me, I’m curious about this one. Have you read it?

RECOMMENDED: Two Rogues Make a Right by Cat Sebastian is $1.99! Lara wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it an A:
This review could easily extend to countless paragraphs of my simply listing the ways in which I love this book and what it has done for me, but I must stop so that you, dear Bitchery, can pick this book up and enjoy it yourselves.

I found Like Lovers Do, which is the second book in the Girls’ Trip series, to be frustrating. I like the focus on friendship and work/life balance in this series, but wow, did this book make me want to plead, “GET SOME THERAPY!” I admired many things about the characters but their inability to manage relationships made me want to scream, as did the evil ex-girlfriend character. This series is about a group of Black … Continue reading Like Lovers Do by Tracey Livesay →

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month. Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month. We also think this … Continue reading August’s New Releases, Part Two →

RECOMMENDED: Sweet Talkin’ Lover by Tracey Livesay is $1.99! Carrie read this one and gave it a B+:
Despite its awkward spots, this book charmed me with food and clothes, and with the friendships, the complicated families, the glory that is Olivia Pope from Scandal, and the emphasis on female mentorship, especially but not exclusively among women of color.

RECOMMENDED: Horrorstor by Grady Hendrix is $1.99! This is a dark comedy/horror novel about a haunted IKEA-esque store. Carrie reviewed the book a few months ago and gave it an A:
Even in the darkest moments, the absurdity of the situation adds some sardonic humor. It’s hard not to giggle at a line like “They nailed me inside a Liripip” or a scenario in which someone’s survival depends on disassembling cheap furniture with one of those weird Allen wrench things.

Sweet Talkin’ Lover opens with several tropes I dislike and yet it charmed me so very much that I read the whole book and enjoyed it (especially when it subverted at least one of those tropes I so dislike). The first in a series about a group of women who are long time friends, the book follows an enemies-to-lovers, big city vs. small town interracial romance. I’m just going to let the cover blurb explain … Continue reading Sweet Talkin’ Lover by Tracey Livesay →

It’s the first of the month! How the heck did that happen? It’s freakin’ December! We’re changing up Hide Your Wallet slightly in the sense that we want to give you all a more curated list. There are more of us now and with all of us listing so many books, we felt the feature was getting a bit unwieldy and away from romance. Going forward, we’ve giving ourselves individual caps and a certain number … Continue reading December’s New Releases →

RECOMMENDED: Moon Called by Patricia Briggs is $1.99! This is the first book in the Mercy Thompson urban fantasy series and I really loved this book. Admittedly, I’m not caught up in the series and have only read the first three or four books, so maybe someone can add some thoughts on how the series unfolds, whether good or bad. Many people love the heroine because she’s a bit of a badass. However, some people feel like the first book is a little slow.

RECOMMENDED: Furiously Happy by Jenny Lawson is $2.99 at Amazon! This sale might expire soon. Elyse loved this book and how it helped her deal with chronic pain. She gave it an A:
Furiously Happy is a rare book, a combination of ridiculous humor and poignant reflection. I think anyone who has suffered from a stigmatized illness will identify with Lawson’s honest, sometimes heartbreaking, description of her own pain. It’s still an uplifting book though, and that’s important. Lawson believes in celebrating small victories and quiet bravery. I get that. Sometimes you’re proud because hey, you got out of bed and showered today but you can’t post that on Facebook because other people don’t get it (and you’ll get shitty comments “Wow, I trained for my half marathon and worked 12 hours.” NOBODY CARES, GARY).

RECOMMENDED: Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake is $1.99! Elyse reviewed this one, giving it an A:
There are a couple of romances in the novel–one a love triangle but not an obnoxious one, and one that made my jaw literally drop. There’s sex too, but it happens off stage. The romances are secondary and serve to drive the plot, and aren’t the main focus of it.
Three Dark Crowns is fun. It’s dark and twisted, it’s all about lady-power, and it’s got a heroine who wears a poisonous snake for a bracelet. I just wish the sequel was out.
