I am always looking for new female voices in crime fiction, and I picked up Leona: The Die is Cast with every expectation of being thrilled. It’s a Scandinavian mystery about a series of baffling bank robberies and it features a diverse heroine. It turns out that this book was not at all what I was expecting, and in order to articulate that, I’m going to need to spoil some things. If you want to … Continue reading Leona: The Die is Cast by Jenny Rogneby →
I’d really like to write a longer review of The Missing by Caroline Eriksson because it’s a superb psychological thriller, but in order for readers to perfectly get the story, I can only talk about the novel superficially. This book is all about fascinating layers, but they really need to unfold for readers organically. Like a lot of thrillers, this book is told deep POV style from an unreliable narrator–in this case, Greta, a young … Continue reading The Missing by Caroline Eriksson, translated by Tiina Nunnally →
Happy Hump Day! This is going to be my last batch of links before I fly home for the holiday! (Please pray for me.) So if next week’s links seem a little strange, it might be a call for help. … A group of awesome women were brought together by a love of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries to create The Adventuresses’ Club of the Americas. Reader Susan Thompson reached out to let us know they’re having … Continue reading Links: Cross Stitch, Magical Mice Shops, & Swag →
I keep saying that I don’t like contemporaries, but that’s just patently not true. Is it going to stop me from saying it? Probably not, but I need a hook to get me interested at all (unlike with historicals where all I need is a big dress on the cover and I’m in). The hook here is that the book takes place in Sweden, written by a Swedish author, and was released in Sweden in … Continue reading All In by Simona Ahrnstedt →
The Warlord’s Wife by Sandra Lake is a deliciously Old-Skooly historical romance set in 12th century Sweden. The hero was occasionally an alphahole, but like a lot of Old Skool heroes, it made his redemption all the more satisfying. The book opens with widow Lida being beaten and dragged in front of her father-in-law. Lida is very pregnant, which is a problem because she was only married a short time. Her mother-in-law accuses her of … Continue reading The Warlord’s Wife by Sandra Lake →
